SO proud of my cultural richness and treasure like this! Spirit, optimism and passion!!!!
The name "Ukraina" appears in the late 11th century, 1087, to be exact in the Primary Chronicle. It could not possible mean "Okraina" (borderland), as it was the center of Kyivan civilization (in fact, Vladimir-Suzdal would have been the "Okraina").
Ukraina seems to mean "Vkraina" - the country, our country.
@eberkovich Maybe the original meaning was country, but it doesn't stop Ukraine from being a "borderland." Their nation is where Orthodoxy and Catholicism collide; they have been the boundary between two foreign empires throughout history: Poland, Lithuania, Nazi Germany/Russia, Soviet Union; they are also a language borderland where Russia dominates the east and Polish influence in the west. Hell, their land occupies where the steppe, black earth, mountains, and Dnipro all collide.
Wonderful! My grandparents came from Ukraine (Galicia at that time), and my dad told us that my grandmother sent him to "cossack dancing school" when he was about 10 and he hated it b/c he had to wear "bloomers" (and so he got out of it after 3 lessons). I wish my dad were here now to see how grand this dancing really is! xopowo!..best I can do on this non-Cyrillic keyboard..
Все трюки и элементы которые исполняют мужчины это боевые приемы казацкого спаса - боевого искуства которое трансформировалось в гопак, в Запорожье есть школы где СПАС сейчас возрождают, занимаются много детей подростков и взрослых.
@Dmitry334 It's good to see that someone has commented on the relationship between the Hopak (from Poltava) and the dancing being based on our old martial arts. 'Cossack' dancing' was an artistic expression of the martial arts. Our cossack heritage lives on in our dances!
i love being ukrainian:) but i feel like this is a major letdown. ive been ukrainian dancing for years and it seems like every ukrainian guy i meet cant dance anywhere near as awesome as this. way to raise false hopes, ukraine. hahahaha
There is one issue I have with people performing these dances. If the dancer has no idea what the dance means or why they are doing it, the dance loses meaning. It loses what is sacred and beautiful.
I myself perform some of these dances and I do understand their meaning. Why they are sacred.
Man....at first I was skeptical that this hid any sort of fighting art then I saw 2:33...LMAO. Wow this is ridiculous, leg sweeps and spinning kicks...jumping double kicks.
WOW! what a great job this group does with Hopak. I was on a folk team in college and we use to do this dance. You really have to be in good shape. And, by the way when they spin, keeping their head squarely pointed to the audience and then flipping it quickly around; that is called spotting, something dancers do when they spin like that so they don't get dizzy.
Note that as they spin they keep their heads squarely pointed at the audience most of the time, then flip them 360 degrees very quickly. A slow example is at 2:56. This technique prevents the vestibular fluid in the horizontal semicircular canal from acquiring sustained movement thereby producing nausea.
you might also like this instrumental band from washington dc. they have a beautiful sounding violin, guitar and drums. very dreamy! search for "Radium Karmara"
This is epic and beautiful. I long to be able to take part in the Hopak... but alas I am Irish... I feel as if it would be blasphemous for one of Hibernian decent, or any other decent than that of Ukrainian decent to intrude on such a sacred and awesome dance.
