  • "Its laughter, and its loving I disdain"

  • Don't talk of love, Well I have heard the word before, Its sleeping my memory. I will not disturb of feelings that have died, If I never love, I never would have Cried.

  • I have my books and my poetry to protect me - love it!

  • Never listened to the lyrics but it always seemed like a snowy day song. Get the same vibe off of Starlight by Muse.

  • Just to correct the subtitle/description a bit...It's Paul Simon AND Art Garfunkel as a team of equals. Thank you for posting the slide show!

  • Now i get it i never did before. i'm guessing the island represents being alone isolated. and the rock having no emotion not caring anymore no pain. I never understood this song before.

  • It never fails to make me ' jealous' that someone else has put into words what I feel.

  • Sometimes it's good to be a Rock! It's also good to be a grasshopper. Balance. Balance the balance. :)

  • i am a rock

  • In my opinion, this song is about someone who has been hurt one time too many. It's summed up clearly at the end:

"and a rock feels no pain; and an island never cries"

  • @sidDkid87 you are right

i have been hurt by soo many people that everything hurts me jnow

  • I studied this in English for a poetry assignment. Paul Simon is genius. Along with Art.

  • I meant ARE not to. Ha

  • This song seems to be about being depressed, maybe. It's upbeat but the lyrics to really sad.

    It's beautiful though

  • The song is about isolation. Isolation after depression, or during.

  • the song of my heart forever !!!

  • this is actually a poem =)

  • What a legendary song! Im loving this since I discovered in an RE lesson.....don't ask me how I came to find it then. It's cool! xxx

  • I read these lyrics in a text book, and that's how I discovered Paul Simon's talents. He's a really good writer!

  • My classmates and i loved listening to it at school. We all kept singing it over and over again!! =] <3

  • I really enjoyed the pictures of rocks, islands, and other things!

  • I used to be a ROCK. This was my theme song, along with SOLITARY MAN by Neil Diamond. Then my sweet baby found chinks in my armour. Still a good song, though. Still listen to it, just not so loud.

  • I had to analyse this song as a poen for my Literature class. Ooooh it was easy, babeh! When I saw it was by Paul Simon, I thought I'd give it a listen.

Cute video, really funny. Even though the song's not meant to be ha

  • Haha same here! My english teacher made us listen to it, and now I have to make a "cd cover" of what this song means to me. :P

  • What school you go to. My tutor was talking about teaching it to her class. By any chance did the teacher read you Yertle the Turtle? Just a question.

  • you know, when your hated and disrepected by alot of ppl long enough and often enough, you subconciously start to believe that the whole world hates you. so i can relate to this song.

  • When I was depressed as a teenager, I used to listen to this song over and over - it really described the way I felt. Now I'm 52, listening to it again, feeling like a rock - once again.

  • I used to be a rock, an island.

Can't anymore and oh boy, what an open door - easier to be a rock but not worth it when you are not alive anymore.

  • sad song T^T

  • we were studying poetry in english and we played this song to find the true meaning behind lyrics. i'll never forget this song

  • I wish I'd gone to your school.

  • lol me too. what school?

  • hampton bays,NY (long island)

  • This definetley is a good song but the message it gives is very sad; no man is an island in my opinion. and in some ways I feel slightly sorry for the artist of this song talking about lonliness and pain in this kind of way.

  • VACpilot the artist is talking about how some people feel, that they are distant from everyone else, he's only showing the truth about how people feel sometimes, the artist is not hiding anything

  • Paul Simon certainly knew what he was talking about though, this song really describes how depressed or lonely people feel.

  • Oh hell yeah, VA, the person in this song has been hurt so badly they are hiding in a non-existence which is safe but meaningless. Haven't we all been there, but to be truly human we need to be able to take that chance, take that risk, go for it, give it all we've got. Safe is just safe, but outside the safety zone lies passion and I believe the risk is worth it.

  • idiots this isn't supposed to be good and happy song, don't say great video or whatever

Like the guy that said below me, if you don't know what it means you wouldn't respond like that to such a song

Serisously guys you should really try and understand the Meaning of thes song and stuff cuz it's really deep.

  • 227131006164893 your a douche. So what if someone likes the song. Of course it means sadness, hurt and the like. Its symbolic and its something you get over.

  • wow, that song really refers to ME. ive been like that for a while now

  • images go in sync ...enjoyed watching this well make flick...

  • I heard he got this idea from the song "Rock Island line"..He thought it was funny the title should have the words "Rock" and "Island" next to each other. He got a lot of ideas that way.."Mother and child reunion" is another one where he was turned on by just a couple of words. He got that idead from a menu in a restuarant, it was chicken with eggs and the restuarant literally called it that, a "Mother and child reunion".

  • mix of winter and happy loneliness.......

    PERFECT, SIMON THE GENIOUS

    ART, PERFECT VOICE...

    PERFECT SONG MAN!!!!

  • Great job on picking the pics! And it's way cool that you subtitled it in two languages. A nice way for music to help bridge the distance between people.

    Peace e paz to you!

  • this song i had to listen to in english. my teacher did it for metaphors and like something else. and now its stuckk in my damn head! x]

  • dont know my teacher made me listen to this song too and i got it stuck in my head. apparently, my teacher thinks this is the best way to teach metaphors

  • if you knew what this is about you wouldnt be talking bad about it

  • "I have my books"

  • parabéns ae, ficou muito bom mesmo

  • mto bommmmm!

  • awesome!

  • This is cute Its like a picture book so funny and sweet

  • Oh well ... no posts. Let me be the first. This is a brutally brilliant piece of songwriting. Early Simon stuff like this and the fabulous "Homeward bound" were gems. It's such a pity that the energy vampire "Art Garfunkel" (even his name is creepy) affixed himself to Simon. Simon eventually recovered and went on to do wondrous stuff such as Graceland. Art brevis, simon longa.

  • leave poor arty alone, he had a great voice, and none of you get this song...

  • Can't believe you wrote that. True, Paul is the writer, but Art gives that magic touch.
