What a beautiful aircraft. Australia did flight and combat test against these when choosing the F18 super hornet. I don't know why because these out gunned and out classed the F18. Not taking anything away from the F18 how ever it is a great plane, just not sure why the defence force would put us at a disadvantage strait out of the gate like that.
@AussieVR4 I would guess it had to do with the fact that the -29 has very limited range compared to the Super Hornet, and nowhere near the antiship/strike capability of the Super Hornet. The Fulcrum may have an advantage in a close-in dogfight, but if the Hornet driver lets him get into guns range to begin with, he's screwed up already. The Fulcrum should never be able to get that close.

@coinageboy MiG-29s don't have very long legs at all like the original F-16. The MiG-35 has better range, the long range fighters used by Russia are the Su-27 family.
Only so much you can expect from export-model planes being flown by poorly-trained pilots from countries like Iraq or Libya. Thankfully there has not been an encounter between an actual Russian MiG-29 and an American F-15, and I'm glad that's the case.

i had a close frenz who flew f-18d n he got training from us airforce,he actually told me mig29 r really superb and amazing plane.even the instructor at the topgun academy in us also admitted.mig-29 r higly manoverable aircraft n the pilot need special training to face this aircraft in the real engagement.....just imagine those topgun pilot from russia flew this beast n face off with.........
Difficult to say which are best since ANY aircraft is part of an whole weapons "package", unleashed over the battlefield, and has a specific role to play in war. For instance, if my side manages to completely jam the other side electronics I could splash any jet fighter with a Cessna 152... :-D (with any luck). But Mig29's do have ONE big advantage... I can buy one for around $3million and fly it as a civilian! :-D If I hit this week's jackpot on euromillions anyway :DDDD
I just dont know why people are comparing Mig-29 to f-15. It is equivalent of f-16 at best (and in most cases apart from Russia, Ukraine an f-16a/b series). Even East Germany, Poland, Yugoslavia and Chechoslovakia were getting the 9.12A type machines (downgraded from USSR 9.12 type). 3rd world countries were given even less equipped stock. I have not heard about new Block 50/52 Falcon fighting against Mig-29M (9.15 type). If you want to compare compare the right planes please.
MiG-29 is junk ... a few East German pilots defected in them to the West, then the USAF took their planes apart and reversed engineered them and discovered that these planes are absolute garbage. We took on these things in the Gulf War (they're even worse when flown by Iraqi pilots) and our F-15's blew them outta the sky easier than in training fights.

I know a couple of people who serviced with Mig 29's, most of them will disagree with you. Even Hornets, Fighting Falcons are no match for the Mig's, considering we have equally skilled pilots on them ;) Me... I'll stick with the Alpha Jet or a Eurofighter ;)

@01SnowRider the hornet is a multirole fighter emphasis on multi it is also computer reliant its limited in combat to about 7.5g now lets look @ the MiG-29S (most in service are of this type) it has a higher roll rate can take 12-13g (not the pilot the plane) and when flown by a trained pilot (not stupid arab who can hardly ride a camel or an eastern european slav with 9 hours in the thing) can easily out turn and gun any opponent the only fighter in our inventories that can turn with it is F16.
@44lucas i was being cynical but yes since the fall no eastern european country had the funds to properly train or equip an air force to content with the western democracies. russian pilots of the mid-late 90s only got 15hrs a month so i doubt the serbs or bosnians got more.
@ywe3 ...and some countries decided to scrap their air forces altogether, as it was the case with Baltic States. On the other hand countries like Hungary or Czech Republic re-equipped selected units with Gripens and they are pretty competent in what they're doing, that said though there is one problem with interoperability of Czech Gripens with the rest of NATO. Poland has a mix of F-16s and MiG-29s which is a somewhat exotic combination but it kinda works, I suppose.
@44lucas the decided to purchase the falcons because their migs were aging and moscow wouldnt sell them the mig 35 i'd say the choice of purchasing these aircraft is one of cost the only country willing to sell them copies was the chinese but they were a little more expensive than the F16AMs we sold them
@ywe3 MiG 35 was never on the table, the choice was between F-16 Block 52 +, Gripens and Mirage 2000. Mirage was the first to be dropped and in the end it came to toss between Gripen & F-16. In the end F-16 was chosen due to problems with integration of Gripens to NATO datalink and F-16 is a better and proven weapons platform. Still, Poland kept MiG-29s and even bought some back from the Germans because... 48 F-16s are just not enough to take on a threat more serious then, say, Belorussia.
@01SnowRider Iraq never operated the Su27. Their primary aircraft were MiG 21s and MiG 29s. There was also one air to air kill of an Su25 taking down an F18 hornet. Given the Iraqi Air Force's situation, that was quite something. Don't underestimate Russian designs so much. There's a very good reason their aeroplanes are still in demand and America is forced to keep improving.
Their running to Iran doesn't say anything about the aircraft. It does say a lot about the guys who flew them though.

In cuba they had a 16 Mig-29s and only 4 were capable of flight. In 2006 they started to take all the rust off the planes and by now they have modified and repaired 2 Mig-29 with 2 locally made Archer Missiles and 4 R-60s. In the modernization program the are now making self-propelled artillery using a BMP-1 chassis with a D-30 mounted, T-55 chassis with M-46 130mm and they ae starting to make SA-2, P-15M, S-125 and other SAMs. Moscow informed that relations with cuba will start next year.

@Nickael7 Yeahh... Probably.. They even make AKMs with cuban made Scopes called VILMA and cuban made silencer. They make BTR-60s (with 37mm AAA) and with 23mm AAA. They made an anti-material sniper rifle called MAMBI and a Sniper that can penetrate any existant bullet proof vest called ALEJANDRO in honor to the sniper rifle that Castro used in the revolution of 1959... I wish that Moscow starts sending new aircrafts like Mig-35 and or Su-27... Cubans are more used to Mig airplanes and Yakolev

@147faq Obsolete airforce...mainly, but SAM systems in case of Iran are quite good, the S-300 is more than reliable (it's also probably one of things, why they haven't bombed the nuclear installations)...

i had a close frenz who flew f-18d n he got training from us airforce,he actually told me mig29 r really superb and amazing plane.even the instructor at the topgun academy in us also admitted.mig-29 r higly manoverable aircraft n the pilot need special training to face this aircraft in the real engagement.....just imagine those topgun pilot from russia flew this beast n face off with.........

Difficult to say which are best since ANY aircraft is part of an whole weapons "package", unleashed over the battlefield, and has a specific role to play in war. For instance, if my side manages to completely jam the other side electronics I could splash any jet fighter with a Cessna 152... :-D (with any luck). But Mig29's do have ONE big advantage... I can buy one for around $3million and fly it as a civilian! :-D If I hit this week's jackpot on euromillions anyway :DDDD

I just dont know why people are comparing Mig-29 to f-15. It is equivalent of f-16 at best (and in most cases apart from Russia, Ukraine an f-16a/b series). Even East Germany, Poland, Yugoslavia and Chechoslovakia were getting the 9.12A type machines (downgraded from USSR 9.12 type). 3rd world countries were given even less equipped stock. I have not heard about new Block 50/52 Falcon fighting against Mig-29M (9.15 type). If you want to compare compare the right planes please.

MiG-29 is junk ... a few East German pilots defected in them to the West, then the USAF took their planes apart and reversed engineered them and discovered that these planes are absolute garbage. We took on these things in the Gulf War (they're even worse when flown by Iraqi pilots) and our F-15's blew them outta the sky easier than in training fights.

From the 24 Mig's 29 hold by Luftwaffe: 1 was destroyed in an accident, 1 was given to the United States for analysis and the remaining 22 were sold to Poland by a symbolic 1€ each. Please do not speak of what you do not know, or at least inform yourself first.

@TonyN737 | As a former Dassault Alpha Jet pilot with some knowledge on the Mig and F15, I would rather face any number of F15's than a single Mig 29. I know a couple of people who serviced with Mig 29's, most of them will disagree with you. Even Hornets, Fighting Falcons are no match for the Mig's, considering we have equally skilled pilots on them ;) Me... I'll stick with the Alpha Jet or a Eurofighter ;)

In the Kosovo war 6 MIG-29's were shot down by NATO air power F-15's/F18's
The first Iraq saw many fighters shot down, this includes the MIG 29, SU27... those who weren't shot down high tailed it for Iran...

@01SnowRider the hornet is a multirole fighter emphasis on multi it is also computer reliant its limited in combat to about 7.5g now lets look @ the MiG-29S (most in service are of this type) it has a higher roll rate can take 12-13g (not the pilot the plane) and when flown by a trained pilot (not stupid arab who can hardly ride a camel or an eastern european slav with 9 hours in the thing) can easily out turn and gun any opponent the only fighter in our inventories that can turn with it is F16.

@44lucas i was being cynical but yes since the fall no eastern european country had the funds to properly train or equip an air force to content with the western democracies. russian pilots of the mid-late 90s only got 15hrs a month so i doubt the serbs or bosnians got more.

@ywe3 ...and some countries decided to scrap their air forces altogether, as it was the case with Baltic States. On the other hand countries like Hungary or Czech Republic re-equipped selected units with Gripens and they are pretty competent in what they're doing, that said though there is one problem with interoperability of Czech Gripens with the rest of NATO. Poland has a mix of F-16s and MiG-29s which is a somewhat exotic combination but it kinda works, I suppose.

@44lucas the decided to purchase the falcons because their migs were aging and moscow wouldnt sell them the mig 35 i'd say the choice of purchasing these aircraft is one of cost the only country willing to sell them copies was the chinese but they were a little more expensive than the F16AMs we sold them

@ywe3 MiG 35 was never on the table, the choice was between F-16 Block 52 +, Gripens and Mirage 2000. Mirage was the first to be dropped and in the end it came to toss between Gripen & F-16. In the end F-16 was chosen due to problems with integration of Gripens to NATO datalink and F-16 is a better and proven weapons platform. Still, Poland kept MiG-29s and even bought some back from the Germans because... 48 F-16s are just not enough to take on a threat more serious then, say, Belorussia.

@01SnowRider Iraq never operated the Su27. Their primary aircraft were MiG 21s and MiG 29s. There was also one air to air kill of an Su25 taking down an F18 hornet. Given the Iraqi Air Force's situation, that was quite something. Don't underestimate Russian designs so much. There's a very good reason their aeroplanes are still in demand and America is forced to keep improving.
Their running to Iran doesn't say anything about the aircraft. It does say a lot about the guys who flew them though.

@tonytreva380 That's my bad, it's the SU25 I was thinking of. In 1990 the Iraqi Airforce had 66 SU25's 31 were destroyed and 7 fled to Iran.
There has only been one allied fighter jet lost and it was indeed an F18, but it was shot down by ground fire, not a fighter jet.
