  • I happen to be a professional trumpeter and I know how important lips are for performing.

We, as trumpeters, take such good care of our lips - this is so important. These children just wish to "have" lips that function regularly.

Won't you please join me in contributing to this wonderful organization?

  • I have a clef and I'm having a surgery on thursday to make it look more natural

  • Well, India might be # 1 in all diseases, and corruptness, but I feel that the culture of India is one of the most kind, pure and people-loving out there! I have met many Indians who all share a passion for life, unconditionally giving, and honestly caring and friendly for another.

  • that guy is so paitient. bless him!

  • i had a clef lip i wouldn't want to go to school because i felt ugly

  • Thank you to all the volunteers and doctors that are responsible for fixing these kids and making their lives so much better. This makes me cry. YOU GUYS ABSOLUTELY ROCK AND THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE YOU ARE IN IT. YOU MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

  • VERY GOOD

  • I love that comment near the end of the video "I thought I had the only child like this... there are so many others here!"

I cried when I saw that part... my son was born with a cleft lip and I remember that feeling of realising "wow, I am not the only one!" Awesome organisation SMILE TRAIN, well done and keep up the amazing work!

  • AboutFace will be hosting a conversation following the showing of this film at the Justice Film Festival in Calgary on November 21st. What a wonderful film! Where can I get a complete copy?

  • OMG Pinki is sooo pretty ^^

  • Look at their eyes in the before and after photos, that tells it all.. No it's not curing child hood diseases and feeding the poor, but that operation changes everything in those children's lives and their families, everything. Give if you can, whatever you can. Like the original March of Dimes campaign, if everyone sent this organization just a small amount of whatever they can spare, think of how many children, families would not be shunned. Give what you can, if you can.

  • PINKY u r really very lucky. Ma

  • @suicidechickenshit dont be, you are beautiful

  • Smile pinki...u r Beautiful!! <33

  • I contribute regularly to Smile Train, and recently they sent me the full video on DVD.

  • You don't even have to donate 250 $. Smile train takes takes even 10 bucks.

  • why does India haf the highest rate of people with clefts?

  • A cleft is a birth defect and often the #1 birth defect in most developing countries - nutrition is one of the leading factors and lack of folic acid. Babies are born with clefts everywhere in the world including the U.S. But you seldom see clefts in the U.S. and Europe because they are repaired automatically soon after birth. Clefts are usually NOT repaired in developing countries because most of the families are too poor to afford surgery and the government will not provide free surgery.

  • @heroeshit man india is no.1 in every diseases like aids, cancer,tb,dengue, and also corruptive people largest in d world it is very strange in our cuntry dat in every bad disease we are no.1 and last in every gud thing...shall we laugh at it or shall we cry? tell us plz

  • I donated to The Smile Train about 6 months ago, and last month i received my photo of the child whose surgery i dontated to...it is one of the most fufilling charities i have donated to, i suggest that anyone and everyone do this, $250 is not much, i am considered "low income" in the U.S, and i did it! Just save up if you have to. Recite this quote daily, "Be the change you want to see"...love to you all.

  • @stendhal666syndrome you are really very generous! Thank you very much.

  • Right now the whole documentary can be found on HBO on Demand. After the summer we will be able to distribute it.

  • Thanks The Smile Train. I clicked to see the schedule on HBO, but couldn't find one. I think I'm going to miss the shows, so I'm glad to hear you are going to distribute it.

  • Where can I find the whole documentary?

  • Great help for the poor kids if its medical indicated, but I think it´s the false solution adjusting the "smile of a child" to the expectations of a society. Just look into the eyes of that beautiful girl und you won´t perceive the deformation of the mouth anymore. THAT´s the direction in which a society has to grow - LOVE without conditions! Realize the divinity and inner beauty of a human without cosmetic surgery!

  • Dear Patates08,

I hope you understand that having a cleft like many of the children you saw in this movie, is not 'healthy' in many ways. Not being able to chew your food properly for instance is causing medical problems. When not treated, those children unfortunately will not reach the 'average age' for adults. As far as I see it, it's not cosmetic surgery at all. Throw in education for all and maybe one of those kids will contribute his/her life to help others as well!

  • You're quite right, but putting aside the medical issues of cleft lip/palette, the social and emotional wellbeing of a child is equally as important. Attitudes are changing, but it won't magically happen and should these children suffer in the meantime? Smile Train does great work.

  • No, it's not. Don't get me wrong I think it's sad, too. But you can't compare this with our society. When children look different they live like in exil because they won't get accepted. I heard from one child that lived in a house away from the family because they couldn't have her in the village. So it was really better for this child to get the surgery.

  • 500 rupees was the amount the mother borrowed for transportation and maybe food during their hospital stay. The hospital asked they give 200 rupees to other patients they might find. 500 rupees is 10 US dollars. Very much an easy charity with a good cause to donate any amount to.

  • My family has donated to this charity. Just $250 will provide surgery to correct one child's smile. It gives you a great feeling to know that a child can smile because you cared. Please donate whatever you can. You will feel great. Smiletrain will thank you and the children will be transformed.

  • Thank you for this documentary.I watched it on HBO and was really moved.Kudos to everyone working at smiletrain!

  • Smile Train is doing a wonderful work in the world thanks to the donations to The Smile Train from people like you & me. From 1$ to the total cost of the surgery anything can help. I'm glad that Pinki (the documentary ) won an Oscar. And Tomorow will be in HBO !

    Blessings to you all.

  • gracias, por ayudar !!!! Estan cambiando la vida de esos niños,,,,......

  • Beautiful Program!!! HIP HIP HURRRAAA FOR PINKY SMILE!!!

My daughter was born with Cleft Palate and Cleft Lip, she was a gift that came to change our life.

    We love you Gaby!!

  • I have a blilateral cleft lip and palate. You wouldn't believe the amount of prejudice I have dealt with as an adult. In order to maintain any relationships with people I have had to make 95% of the phone calls. If I stop calling their goes the relationship. Never had a job offer or got past the first date. Luckily my speech is good. Any success I have had has been over the telephone with people who don't know I have a cleft. Once they find out all future calls stop. Be kind to us!

  • please dont be offended by this question but cant you get surgery? id imagine most countries would do it

  • Even with surgery, there is still a very visible scar & usually a perceptible effect on speech. It's a purely cosmetic effect but it's very easy for even the slightest difference in appearance to make people behave in a unaccepting manner.

  • And they could very well be too poor to afford a cosmetic surgery.

  • Smile Train is an amazing charity. It's so well-run that they can perform one operation for every $250 donated. Please make a donation today, and tell your friends. Buy a smile for someone! Thanks, and God bless you.

  • That is such a cute little girl!

  • Despite her facial disformity, Pinki has such a sweet and beautiful face. God bless the people who have lived with various disformities.

  • Thanks to Ms Mylan and the Smile Train. Please get on board. Just $250 made this happen.

  • The smile cost $250, not the movie. The Smile Train has done almost half million surgeries in less than ten years. Make a difference and feel the joy of giving a child a smile, but more importantly a second chance at life.

  • Smile Pinki! and she did!

  • Congratulations on your Oscar win! The readergirlz are so proud and thankful for your work. One of our authors, Justina Chen Headley, is raising awareness of 3rd world cleft lip and palate surgeries with her novel, North of Beautiful. We applaud you!
