Well, India might be # 1 in all diseases, and corruptness, but I feel that the culture of India is one of the most kind, pure and people-loving out there! I have met many Indians who all share a passion for life, unconditionally giving, and honestly caring and friendly for another.
Thank you to all the volunteers and doctors that are responsible for fixing these kids and making their lives so much better. This makes me cry. YOU GUYS ABSOLUTELY ROCK AND THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE YOU ARE IN IT. YOU MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Look at their eyes in the before and after photos, that tells it all.. No it's not curing child hood diseases and feeding the poor, but that operation changes everything in those children's lives and their families, everything. Give if you can, whatever you can. Like the original March of Dimes campaign, if everyone sent this organization just a small amount of whatever they can spare, think of how many children, families would not be shunned. Give what you can, if you can.
A cleft is a birth defect and often the #1 birth defect in most developing countries - nutrition is one of the leading factors and lack of folic acid. Babies are born with clefts everywhere in the world including the U.S. But you seldom see clefts in the U.S. and Europe because they are repaired automatically soon after birth. Clefts are usually NOT repaired in developing countries because most of the families are too poor to afford surgery and the government will not provide free surgery.

I donated to The Smile Train about 6 months ago, and last month i received my photo of the child whose surgery i dontated to...it is one of the most fufilling charities i have donated to, i suggest that anyone and everyone do this, $250 is not much, i am considered "low income" in the U.S, and i did it! Just save up if you have to. Recite this quote daily, "Be the change you want to see"...love to you all.
Thanks The Smile Train. I clicked to see the schedule on HBO, but couldn't find one. I think I'm going to miss the shows, so I'm glad to hear you are going to distribute it.
Great help for the poor kids if its medical indicated, but I think it´s the false solution adjusting the "smile of a child" to the expectations of a society. Just look into the eyes of that beautiful girl und you won´t perceive the deformation of the mouth anymore. THAT´s the direction in which a society has to grow - LOVE without conditions! Realize the divinity and inner beauty of a human without cosmetic surgery!
I hope you understand that having a cleft like many of the children you saw in this movie, is not 'healthy' in many ways. Not being able to chew your food properly for instance is causing medical problems. When not treated, those children unfortunately will not reach the 'average age' for adults. As far as I see it, it's not cosmetic surgery at all. Throw in education for all and maybe one of those kids will contribute his/her life to help others as well!
You're quite right, but putting aside the medical issues of cleft lip/palette, the social and emotional wellbeing of a child is equally as important. Attitudes are changing, but it won't magically happen and should these children suffer in the meantime? Smile Train does great work.
No, it's not. Don't get me wrong I think it's sad, too. But you can't compare this with our society. When children look different they live like in exil because they won't get accepted. I heard from one child that lived in a house away from the family because they couldn't have her in the village. So it was really better for this child to get the surgery.
500 rupees was the amount the mother borrowed for transportation and maybe food during their hospital stay. The hospital asked they give 200 rupees to other patients they might find. 500 rupees is 10 US dollars. Very much an easy charity with a good cause to donate any amount to.
My family has donated to this charity. Just $250 will provide surgery to correct one child's smile. It gives you a great feeling to know that a child can smile because you cared. Please donate whatever you can. You will feel great. Smiletrain will thank you and the children will be transformed.
Smile Train is doing a wonderful work in the world thanks to the donations to The Smile Train from people like you & me. From 1$ to the total cost of the surgery anything can help. I'm glad that Pinki (the documentary ) won an Oscar. And Tomorow will be in HBO !
I have a blilateral cleft lip and palate. You wouldn't believe the amount of prejudice I have dealt with as an adult. In order to maintain any relationships with people I have had to make 95% of the phone calls. If I stop calling their goes the relationship. Never had a job offer or got past the first date. Luckily my speech is good. Any success I have had has been over the telephone with people who don't know I have a cleft. Once they find out all future calls stop. Be kind to us!
Even with surgery, there is still a very visible scar & usually a perceptible effect on speech. It's a purely cosmetic effect but it's very easy for even the slightest difference in appearance to make people behave in a unaccepting manner.
Smile Train is an amazing charity. It's so well-run that they can perform one operation for every $250 donated. Please make a donation today, and tell your friends. Buy a smile for someone! Thanks, and God bless you.
This touches you emotionally. Congratulations to Pinky and those who cured her lips. Her struggles to ovrcome her problem are worth noting. I think this documentary deserved to win.

The smile cost $250, not the movie. The Smile Train has done almost half million surgeries in less than ten years. Make a difference and feel the joy of giving a child a smile, but more importantly a second chance at life.

Wonderful work by Megan Mylan. NIce to see that her work was awarded with Oscar. I am sure she is also getting the blessings of a billion Indian people. The doctor and his team is doing selfless job. It shows the hope. May God bless them all.
Great, Simply fantastic. A truly heart rendering story, re-assuring those in need, that to keep hope alive is truly a wonderful thing, & something one should not give up. My heart goes out to the poor girl & her turn-around story is inspiring & thought provoking
I was born with a bi-lateral cleft lip and palate and feel that this organization, Smile Train, is a miracle for children around the world. Thank you for shedding light on our birth defect and showing that with the help and donation from people, doctors, and volunteers, we can change the world!
have not seen the movie...but seems to reinforce the idea.. "try to show the suffering in developing countries humanely, and the awards are all yours"
I happen to be a professional trumpeter and I know how important lips are for performing.
We, as trumpeters, take such good care of our lips - this is so important. These children just wish to "have" lips that function regularly.
Won't you please join me in contributing to this wonderful organization?

Great, Simply fantastic. A truly heart rendering story, re-assuring those in need, that to keep hope alive is truly a wonderful thing, & something one should not give up. My heart goes out to the poor girl & her turn-around story is inspiring & thought provoking

Congrats!!!!!
I was born with a bi-lateral cleft lip and palate and feel that this organization, Smile Train, is a miracle for children around the world. Thank you for shedding light on our birth defect and showing that with the help and donation from people, doctors, and volunteers, we can change the world!

Very inspiring. It's medical camps such as these that renew my respect for doctors and NGOs.
It's a shame that there are not takers in India even after its nomination for the Oscars.
