  • @DementedSquirel Thats because the so called 'metal' pieces in rockschool are the most generic, stereotypical pieces out there. If they put some periphery songs, or some protest the hero songs or stuff like that as the grade 8 pieces, half of the people rockschool label as good would be considered shit.

    as far as the pieces go, its not very hard at all, however, the theory is through the roof. really complex stuff. thats what makes it grade 8, its almost like an A level.

  • In that bit where you play the hammer on 16ths, it's meant to be 11h14 but other than that I can't fault it.

    I'm sitting this piece in December as part of my university's mock exam course :), that descending bit from the 11th fret high e still gets me!

  • @chikaofg it says 11th to 14th in the book, but it sounds different to the track if you do that, my guitar teacher even told me to play 13th there

  • It's grade 8 because of all the time changes in it! has like 4 different time signatures it's written to trow you out of time, that's my opinion anyway

  • Having a vague amount of experience in guitar i can attest that while it is easy to pick up it is hard to master. Even so this does seem surprisingly simple for grade 8. Maybe that is why so few Guitarists are actually impressive musicians and modern popular music has stagnated. We need to tax our guitarists more!

  • To be fair rockschool grades are relatively simple in comparrison with other examination bodies, I'd say this should be about a grade 6 peice.

    Not to say this isn't a fantastic performance :)

  • Well you can alternate Eb myxolydian and a Db myxolydian mode which is how I do the first 8 bars of the solo then I alternate between Eb blues scale and Eb Aeolian mode. Try that and see what you think!

  • what scale or mode do you use over the E flat nine and the D flat nine chords in the solo?

  • What scales do you need to use, can you use a pentatonic or should it be a modal?

  • If you play this is a metal hardcore version, this can turn up pretty sick! Like Chimaira or lamb of god style. :p But this piece is pretty cool.

    and when it switches to 7/4 you can hear the drums just pull off the last 3 so the drummers definatelt thinking mathcore.

    i find this one easier than the metal one.

    7/4 is a piece of piss to count out though.

    667 the metal piece is a whore on bass guitar, all the little fills are hard to get perfect.

  • mate u can't really say that it may be easiest for you but everyones playing styles are different and it depends what your used to, eg if you've been a metal head for 10 years 667 is obviously easier

  • I know what you mean but even so people say the hard part of this song is the counting because of the rhythms that are different to the others like 667 or Bonzo and it would be for metal heads as they'd be used to playing mega fast solos but it's really not that hard.. some you win has difficult rhythms that would take hours of practice to learn but this really is crazily easy. Long as you practice with the backing track you pick up the rhythm really quickly. Try it man

  • I think every1 should focus on SLACKERZ comment. see, she/he has played and been graded on piano and violin indicating her theory and playing ability are already developed therefore picking up a guitar isnt that hard as a stepping block and since her/his fingers are flexible grade 8 really wont be much of a problem once she/he has been informed of the basics (5 lessons worth). So she/he can try throw that around but when you really look at it. its pretty average bt fun all the same 2 b an ass!

  • I love rockschool, its so much easier compared to ABRSM!!! I've had 5 lessons on the guitar and went out and bought myself grade 8 rockschool. No way could I have done that with ABRSM on piano or violin!

  • if you've just bought grade 8 rockschool then why have you named songs from the old syllabus?

    surely if you just bought it it would be sampa sampa and 667 etc.

  • @xSLACKERZx I'm doing the old syllabus for my HND in pop music, they're now considered "Diploma Level" standard according to my guitar teacher at my institute.. The new Grade 8 pieces are much easier! :)

  • @WHYDONTYOUSUKONTHIS also i do agree, guitar is cool. its probably the best instrument between that and piano, because they are both multi genre, rhythm AND lead instruments, making them so versatile! then, for me, violin and saxaphone sound the nicest when used well. anyways dude playing music isnt about "gettin chicks", its about playing music. i have a girlfriend and i try not to play her guitar because i think those worlds should be kept separate (unless using a woman as a muse i suppose)

  • @97scowny the solo and the timing is the one that's really difficult for 'Whatever happened to jazz'. Mud Pie is a pretty straight forward piece. To do a guitar solo on this piece, you have to have an extensive knowledge of scales. you can't just play just one scale with single notes and get away with it. It doesn't work for this song.

  • exam board - releases books of musics just like with other music exam boards. you choose songs from the cd that comes with the book, sign up and take your exam

  • Rockschool is an exam board that teaches contemporary music.

  • It is an examination board for drums guitar and bass and they are based on tab reading and arent as theoretical as other examination boards such as ABRSM

  • if you have a look at the music you would see, it sounds simple but you have time changes from 15/8 - 7/4 - 4/4 and most of the guitair is improvised..i think..even still the rockschool pieces are deceptive becuse they do sound simple and it helps a great deal if you have a good ear for music buuuut if you dont then they are exceptionally challenging.

  • I'm afraid that Rockschool has become far too popular. I appreciate the importance of learning to play songs and the like but these grades really don't improve peoples playing or musicallity. I have a few students doing Rockschool and there progression is far less interesting to watch than the students i have doing RGT. I myself did RGT and it is alot, and i really mean ALOT harder than Rockschool. I learnt fusion by ear after listening to it three times.

  • ive just learnt fusion by ear after the second time...and im supposed to be grade 5 level so its not that hard...the part that they are testing is the precision and accuracy of the performance...you cant tell me that you can play fusion perfectly because you would be BS me and yourself, but they know that you can pick it up easily, its playing it well enough to pass that they are trying to make you do...i know a guy who's grade 5 ABRSM, and no offence, but he is not particularly good :S

  • Yes, i could do this, but have no video recording equipment. And my point was, if you read between lines, that MUCH earlier grades at RGT are harder than this.

    I think a good idea would be to go in alternate steps- i.e. grade 1-grade3-grade5 etc.

    If you just gp to grade 8 it'll take ages, at least you have the backghround from the otehr grades :)

  • you need the background; its pretty much essential. you should maybe think about starting on grade 2 or 3; i did that, but i did have some prior playing skill.

    im on 6 atm, went there straight form 4, and its fairly hard.

  • For the higher grades you have to bring in a lot of improvisation. Grade 1 is very boring, I have a few students doing it right now but I'd say get that out of the way, go to grade III, see how you find that and then try 5

  • hey guys,i took rockschool guitar grade 8 exam few days ago,i think i'm gonna fail because i did bad in ear test and quick study piece(i play the score well but did bad in improvisation part).can anyone tell me how to improve ear test?or recommand to me any useful book of this area?because i'm gonna resit for the exam. it's true, ear test is a killer!!!

  • practice! know the names of all intervals (c-g perfect fifth, all sharps and equivalant flats)

    go through them on a piano,or guitar, (taking fifths) play and sing "c -g" .. play again and say "perfect - fifth " and do it again and go "la - la " and think of the sound in your head and then play only one note and sing the higher and do it in your head too, then do that for all the notes up to c an octave higher but going up name the black notes as sharps and going down name them as flats.

  • then do that with the other intervals , but nb. make sure you have the right intervals b to f is not a perfect fifth for instance its an augmented 4th so be careful.

  • Is it just intervals on the rockschool exam or o you have to recognise chord types, time signatures, cadences too?

    Do the rockschool intervals just go up to an octave or right through to a major 13th?

  • I've had a student make a complete and utter balls-up of his aural and he STILL got a merit! ;-)) Firstly: get the companion guide - there's usually 6 examples of aural tests. Secondly: practice your scales and arpeggios in 3rds (so, root, 3rd, 2nd, 4th etc) - trust me, it'll open your ears up no end. Thirdly: work out stuff from audio tracks (CDs etc) by ear WITHOUT relying upon some (usually totally inaccurate anyway!) tab. That's what we did when I was a lad (no CDs and internet then)! :-O

    to anyone who knows this song on bass or guitar, can i ask does the walking bass (from 1:05 it seems) have a chord sequence to follow? it sounds rather free with no audible changes and i'd feel more comfortable walking over chords.

  • Not exactly a chord sequence but it's 2 bars of Db7 (in 7/4 time signature), then 2 bars of Eb7 (the first bar being 7/4, the second in 4/4). It is pretty free, mostly just a chromatic walking line. It gets even freer in the solo section, and double time! It's great. Hope that helped.
