@DementedSquirel Thats because the so called 'metal' pieces in rockschool are the most generic, stereotypical pieces out there. If they put some periphery songs, or some protest the hero songs or stuff like that as the grade 8 pieces, half of the people rockschool label as good would be considered shit.
as far as the pieces go, its not very hard at all, however, the theory is through the roof. really complex stuff. thats what makes it grade 8, its almost like an A level.
It's grade 8 because of all the time changes in it! has like 4 different time signatures it's written to trow you out of time, that's my opinion anyway
Having a vague amount of experience in guitar i can attest that while it is easy to pick up it is hard to master. Even so this does seem surprisingly simple for grade 8. Maybe that is why so few Guitarists are actually impressive musicians and modern popular music has stagnated. We need to tax our guitarists more!
Well you can alternate Eb myxolydian and a Db myxolydian mode which is how I do the first 8 bars of the solo then I alternate between Eb blues scale and Eb Aeolian mode. Try that and see what you think!
mate u can't really say that it may be easiest for you but everyones playing styles are different and it depends what your used to, eg if you've been a metal head for 10 years 667 is obviously easier
I know what you mean but even so people say the hard part of this song is the counting because of the rhythms that are different to the others like 667 or Bonzo and it would be for metal heads as they'd be used to playing mega fast solos but it's really not that hard.. some you win has difficult rhythms that would take hours of practice to learn but this really is crazily easy. Long as you practice with the backing track you pick up the rhythm really quickly. Try it man
I think every1 should focus on SLACKERZ comment. see, she/he has played and been graded on piano and violin indicating her theory and playing ability are already developed therefore picking up a guitar isnt that hard as a stepping block and since her/his fingers are flexible grade 8 really wont be much of a problem once she/he has been informed of the basics (5 lessons worth). So she/he can try throw that around but when you really look at it. its pretty average bt fun all the same 2 b an ass!
I love rockschool, its so much easier compared to ABRSM!!! I've had 5 lessons on the guitar and went out and bought myself grade 8 rockschool. No way could I have done that with ABRSM on piano or violin!
Haha mate I replied back to smurphy just saying I'm 16, and I'm doing grade 8 on violin, piano and drums. Got a distinction in my grade 7 violin and piano, and by the way I'm half way through Metal Mania, Battersea Benches and part of Avant Garde Igloo. I don't think I'm a prodigy, but I'm still alrite...
@xSLACKERZx I'm doing the old syllabus for my HND in pop music, they're now considered "Diploma Level" standard according to my guitar teacher at my institute.. The new Grade 8 pieces are much easier! :)
its one thing to go out and buy the book... but you haven't taken the exam yet :P. Although you are right. Rockschool is worryingly simple compared to abrsm. And guitar is an easy instrument.
@LoopyMoscardini modern guitar is ridiculous! this whole "rockschoool" grading system is just wrong. you play something that takes this much skill at grade 2 or 3 of classical guitar! ok have a look at the grade 8 piano stuff, the grade 8 classical stuff, the grade 8 sight reading, grade 8 ANYTHING ELSE and you'll realise that this guitar exam is a fuckin joke!
@Winnders why dont you get yourself a guitar and have a go and upload your effort then we will see how easy you find it pal? untill then keep your pathetic jealous opinions to yourself! ok?
@WHYDONTYOUSUKONTHIS i dont play piano dude. im a guitarist myself, thats how i know this isnt hard. whenever i get a camera i will post songs or whatever but until then you gotta stay tuned :P im not jealous of this guy, and im also not saying he is bad. all im saying is that this shouldnt be grade 8 standard. its unfair to all those people who do play piano and stuff! they deserve more credit then us guitarists get i think. suppose im prolly just feeding a troll though right?
@Winnders the reason your posting hatefull comments is because you know the guitar is cool no matter what, and you will never be cool playing classical music on a piano, dont get me wrong its a great music in its own right but your not gonna be wooing too many chics are you? thats why your here trying to put this guy down coz you know you suck and are gay, go home with your gay classical piano, nobody listens to that crap anymore and your in a time warp, gaylord!!!!!!!!!!
@WHYDONTYOUSUKONTHIS also i do agree, guitar is cool. its probably the best instrument between that and piano, because they are both multi genre, rhythm AND lead instruments, making them so versatile! then, for me, violin and saxaphone sound the nicest when used well. anyways dude playing music isnt about "gettin chicks", its about playing music. i have a girlfriend and i try not to play her guitar because i think those worlds should be kept separate (unless using a woman as a muse i suppose)
@WHYDONTYOUSUKONTHIS I'm sorry to say this but if you're any older than 12 then you should be embarrassed, if you were even slightly smart in the musical world, you'd know that all the new bands such as disturbed and and older bands like Iron maiden and metallica all have the most respect for classical music and would say that it is the most advanced and best example of music today and forever.
@LoopyMoscardini i don't want to sound like a snob but this seems pretty basic for a grade 8 piece, im currently doing grade 6 and the song "Mud Pie" to me is a lot harder to learn
@97scowny the solo and the timing is the one that's really difficult for 'Whatever happened to jazz'. Mud Pie is a pretty straight forward piece. To do a guitar solo on this piece, you have to have an extensive knowledge of scales. you can't just play just one scale with single notes and get away with it. It doesn't work for this song.
exam board - releases books of musics just like with other music exam boards. you choose songs from the cd that comes with the book, sign up and take your exam
It is an examination board for drums guitar and bass and they are based on tab reading and arent as theoretical as other examination boards such as ABRSM
if you have a look at the music you would see, it sounds simple but you have time changes from 15/8 - 7/4 - 4/4 and most of the guitair is improvised..i think..even still the rockschool pieces are deceptive becuse they do sound simple and it helps a great deal if you have a good ear for music buuuut if you dont then they are exceptionally challenging.
I'm afraid that Rockschool has become far too popular. I appreciate the importance of learning to play songs and the like but these grades really don't improve peoples playing or musicallity. I have a few students doing Rockschool and there progression is far less interesting to watch than the students i have doing RGT. I myself did RGT and it is alot, and i really mean ALOT harder than Rockschool. I learnt fusion by ear after listening to it three times.
ive just learnt fusion by ear after the second time...and im supposed to be grade 5 level so its not that hard...the part that they are testing is the precision and accuracy of the performance...you cant tell me that you can play fusion perfectly because you would be BS me and yourself, but they know that you can pick it up easily, its playing it well enough to pass that they are trying to make you do...i know a guy who's grade 5 ABRSM, and no offence, but he is not particularly good :S
i dont think hes aiming to show a perfect performance required for the grading...more along the lines of just playin guitar in a video to people who want to listen...not examine him :D
Yes, i could do this, but have no video recording equipment. And my point was, if you read between lines, that MUCH earlier grades at RGT are harder than this.
To be honest i don't why this song should be hard?
Could someone explain? I mean have to do grade 1 and it's soo boring. I would rather just go straight to grade 8 and practice it for like a couple of months
Great guitar playing though mate. Your other video's are really good as well.
you need the background; its pretty much essential. you should maybe think about starting on grade 2 or 3; i did that, but i did have some prior playing skill.
im on 6 atm, went there straight form 4, and its fairly hard.
For the higher grades you have to bring in a lot of improvisation. Grade 1 is very boring, I have a few students doing it right now but I'd say get that out of the way, go to grade III, see how you find that and then try 5
Hi, i'm taking this exam in a few weeks time and upon learning this song have become quite interested in this style. Can anyone recommend any artists who play this kind of stuff?
hey guys,i took rockschool guitar grade 8 exam few days ago,i think i'm gonna fail because i did bad in ear test and quick study piece(i play the score well but did bad in improvisation part).can anyone tell me how to improve ear test?or recommand to me any useful book of this area?because i'm gonna resit for the exam. it's true, ear test is a killer!!!
practice! know the names of all intervals (c-g perfect fifth, all sharps and equivalant flats)
go through them on a piano,or guitar, (taking fifths) play and sing "c -g" .. play again and say "perfect - fifth " and do it again and go "la - la " and think of the sound in your head and then play only one note and sing the higher and do it in your head too, then do that for all the notes up to c an octave higher but going up name the black notes as sharps and going down name them as flats.
then do that with the other intervals , but nb. make sure you have the right intervals b to f is not a perfect fifth for instance its an augmented 4th so be careful.
I've had a student make a complete and utter balls-up of his aural and he STILL got a merit! ;-)) Firstly: get the companion guide - there's usually 6 examples of aural tests. Secondly: practice your scales and arpeggios in 3rds (so, root, 3rd, 2nd, 4th etc) - trust me, it'll open your ears up no end. Thirdly: work out stuff from audio tracks (CDs etc) by ear WITHOUT relying upon some (usually totally inaccurate anyway!) tab. That's what we did when I was a lad (no CDs and internet then)! :-O
nice, i like this piece alot. i'm taking my grade 6 bass on 9th june and am going to get straight to work on grade 8, purely because the pieces look so fun and demanding.
to anyone who knows this song on bass or guitar, can i ask does the walking bass (from 1:05 it seems) have a chord sequence to follow? it sounds rather free with no audible changes and i'd feel more comfortable walking over chords.
Not exactly a chord sequence but it's 2 bars of Db7 (in 7/4 time signature), then 2 bars of Eb7 (the first bar being 7/4, the second in 4/4). It is pretty free, mostly just a chromatic walking line. It gets even freer in the solo section, and double time! It's great. Hope that helped.
Nice video by the way, I like the solo and your tone is great.
Hey Keng, very nice, always interesting to play over odd rhythms, I heard the 7/8 great, on my new album I also have some Odd structures,in the beginning you feel lost but after a while it's like it's getting familiar and it certainly takes you somewhere else. Hope you understand my English my friend, greets Vic.
It's Jazz alright .... and whatever happened to it? It's still laying down in the cool of the tall grass, together, next to classical, waiting to inspire any that are willing to take a moment away from the noize of the field. Take the time God gave you to listen.
i love the coda. soo good. btw you played it great.

ive just learnt fusion by ear after the second time...and im supposed to be grade 5 level so its not that hard...the part that they are testing is the precision and accuracy of the performance...you cant tell me that you can play fusion perfectly because you would be BS me and yourself, but they know that you can pick it up easily, its playing it well enough to pass that they are trying to make you do...i know a guy who's grade 5 ABRSM, and no offence, but he is not particularly good :S
dontutakemymorphine 3 years ago
i dont think hes aiming to show a perfect performance required for the grading...more along the lines of just playin guitar in a video to people who want to listen...not examine him :D

i'm at about grade 5 RGT standard, and i could play this standing on my head.
philbertfwog 3 years ago
i would like u 2 do a video of that - id watch
stef0307 3 years ago 3
Yes, i could do this, but have no video recording equipment. And my point was, if you read between lines, that MUCH earlier grades at RGT are harder than this.
philbertfwog 3 years ago
Im doing it simular.
I'm doing 2,4,6,8.
I'm taking grade 4 soon.
I don't have a problem with any of the grade though really.
I'm a drummer btw lol.

To be honest i don't why this song should be hard?
Could someone explain? I mean have to do grade 1 and it's soo boring. I would rather just go straight to grade 8 and practice it for like a couple of months
Great guitar playing though mate. Your other video's are really good as well.

I've just started learning so I'm on the debut one...:(
I think a good idea would be to go in alternate steps- i.e. grade 1-grade3-grade5 etc.
If you just gp to grade 8 it'll take ages, at least you have the backghround from the otehr grades :)
Blazio95 3 years ago
Yeh i suppose so. I was doing debut one as well :(. But instead my guitar teacher is letting me go to grade 2 first.
HKimonos 3 years ago
my teacher let me go straight to grade 5 when i did it, that is at least a little interesting most of that stuff

grade 4 & 5 r reely gd
bust up and secret place r great songs
172superman172 3 years ago
you need the background; its pretty much essential. you should maybe think about starting on grade 2 or 3; i did that, but i did have some prior playing skill.
im on 6 atm, went there straight form 4, and its fairly hard.
miquel64 3 years ago
For the higher grades you have to bring in a lot of improvisation. Grade 1 is very boring, I have a few students doing it right now but I'd say get that out of the way, go to grade III, see how you find that and then try 5

Hi, i'm taking this exam in a few weeks time and upon learning this song have become quite interested in this style. Can anyone recommend any artists who play this kind of stuff?
Cheers.

practice! know the names of all intervals (c-g perfect fifth, all sharps and equivalant flats)
go through them on a piano,or guitar, (taking fifths) play and sing "c -g" .. play again and say "perfect - fifth " and do it again and go "la - la " and think of the sound in your head and then play only one note and sing the higher and do it in your head too, then do that for all the notes up to c an octave higher but going up name the black notes as sharps and going down name them as flats.
gammypage 3 years ago
then do that with the other intervals , but nb. make sure you have the right intervals b to f is not a perfect fifth for instance its an augmented 4th so be careful.
gammypage 3 years ago
Is it just intervals on the rockschool exam or o you have to recognise chord types, time signatures, cadences too?
Do the rockschool intervals just go up to an octave or right through to a major 13th?

also you could check out my videos for that much help lol

I've had a student make a complete and utter balls-up of his aural and he STILL got a merit! ;-)) Firstly: get the companion guide - there's usually 6 examples of aural tests. Secondly: practice your scales and arpeggios in 3rds (so, root, 3rd, 2nd, 4th etc) - trust me, it'll open your ears up no end. Thirdly: work out stuff from audio tracks (CDs etc) by ear WITHOUT relying upon some (usually totally inaccurate anyway!) tab. That's what we did when I was a lad (no CDs and internet then)! :-O

nice, i like this piece alot. i'm taking my grade 6 bass on 9th june and am going to get straight to work on grade 8, purely because the pieces look so fun and demanding.
to anyone who knows this song on bass or guitar, can i ask does the walking bass (from 1:05 it seems) have a chord sequence to follow? it sounds rather free with no audible changes and i'd feel more comfortable walking over chords.
cheers.
SagarisBMX 3 years ago
