i never really paid attention to amy winehouse when she became famous and had all that alcohol and drug problems, and when she died I had no idea what the world had lost. But since I saw this video about a week ago I have felt sadness for the world, because none of us could save her. Thank you for this video , so we all get to see the Real Amy Winehouse and enjoy her music for years to come
@ DiamondLifeXoxo Sorry, no offense (or none to anyone else here) I will never mention Amy and lady Caca in the same breath again. There is no comparison.
@yacatanJack, no she took tot he booze because she was depressed and has been an alcoholic even during this time. It just escalated....also, her "look" had nothing to do with Lady Gaga, wasn't inspired by Lady Gaga and in fact the reason why Lady Gaga is even a blonde is because someone thought she was Amy Winehouse :3 Everything else in your comment I give you a thumbs up ;3
Amy, this is how I discovered you.Sitting alone in my apartment one night a long time ago watching Dinah Washington videos.I saw this video off to the side and clicked on it.I remember that moment I first heard you sing.Mouth wide open, I sat here amazed, awed, repeating the same words over and over, 'oh my God'. It seems so long, long ago. Your artistic genius comes but once in a lifetime...thank you for being in mine if but for only a little while. This video will always be special to me.
Ms Winehouse is Definitely in good company because Amy Winehouse, Chrisette Michelle, and Eryka Badu all do an excellent job of channeling Ms Billie Holiday,,,It's that same vocal style they have,,,Here's to you ladies,,,,,
Amy Winehouse was so amazing, and Blake claimed to love her but yet he openly admitted to getting her hooked on drugs.......he killed her is what he did!
@TheSandbar136 she very well could be. if there is a better singer anywhere please reveal yourself and show us that it could be done again. tell me the bar hasn`t been set so high that no one can ever do it again. i need hope...
Chanced WHAT? This is a very cunning hode-podge of vocal cliches and attitudes, admittedly pulled off very naturally. She's obviously a really good singer, but the musical personna is hardly well-developed; to compare her to Dinah Washington, Billie Holliday or Ella Fitzgerald is just silly...wishful thinking.
@Scrayfish0 What? I would argue that her musical persona is beyond those of Billie and Dinah, largely because she wrote her own songs. This allowed her vocal style to develop with her lyrical style, and by the time Back To Black was released, she had a very unique and individual style, more so than Bille and Dinah.
@Alexdurrant7 I was responding to the panegyrics over Amy's vocal style, not her songwriting. My mention of Dinah, Billie, Ella, or better yet, Anita O'Day, Carmen McCrae or Peggy Lee, was to put forth the best examples of great interpreters since many comments posted here seem to suggest Amy is some kind of great jazz singer which she is NOT by any stretch. This is not meant to disparage Amy; she never developed technique or style to rank with the above company or seemed to care.
@simisenti True enough, we are expressing our opinions here. But I would submit that someone who is not familiar with the singers I cited, someone who has not immersed themselves in music enough to distinguish between these singers, or speak as musician, is not on particularly firm footing a position to comment on mine. My purpose in posting was to make people curious about hearing the other singers. I am confident that a talented listener over time would reach the same conclusions.
@doma68ful Tony Bennett also said the U.S. should take responsibility for 9/11 and about a million other silly things because he's desperate for attention. Plus it's ridiculous to say this person or that person is "the best voice.".What...better than Placido Domingo? George Jones? Frank Sinatra? You can love her all you want, but she never developed a clear identity as a jazz singer or interpreter. Granted, she was a big talent with great vocal equipment. Why do you like her so much?
@Scrayfish0 Frank (also deluxe edition) is amazing jazz/hip hop album. Her voice is very unusual...sorry I can't find another voice like her...I can say she was a mix of Dinah, Aretha...and later Billie. She did many jazz covers and made it her own...nobody from young generation could sing Dinah, Billie, Sarah that well like Amy...and still her voice was unique, her phrasing was incredible. Even when she made 2nd album with more motown sound, you can hear that beautiful jazzy voice.
@Scrayfish0 And not only Tony Benett said she had that great voice to be mention in a same sentence like Ella, Sarah etc....actually many people keep saying this. Teach me tonight is excellent example of how great she was...and I also love her lyrics, songs, and emotions.
@doma68ful Well, I respect your attachment and it's not fun to have somebody appear to tear down something you love, which I'm not trying to do. There aren't many jazz musicians who consider Amy a jazz singer, nor for that matter does anyone consider Tony Bennett or Dinah Washington jazz singers. They are pop singers with a strong jazz influence, and in Dinah's case she was a great blues singer, but most people remember her for her pop hits. Did you ever see "Jazz on a Summers Day"?
@Scrayfish0 okey, I know she's not 100% jazz singer, because she was mixing many stuff...but when you talk only about the voice then she had perfect jazz voice If you have put her in 40s then she would have been as famous as now...I wish she had done album with only jazz standards.
@doma68ful Well be sure to watch that movie...I'm not trying win a debate, just turn you on to something pretty amazing. I'll bet it's on YouTube Anita O'Day singing Sweet Georgia Brown.

@Scrayfish0 We (or I) like her so much because she was a normal London girl who made it big with a fabulous voice and a great future in front of her. Sadly her fame seemed to be her undoing and we all hoped she would come out the other side of it......but we lost her. She was a fun, talented, genuine, kind Cockney girl destroyed by fame, men, drugs and booze. England has lost someone very special and that is why we liked her so much. Amy was unique.
@fuckamericanidiot she said she had been listening to Ella when she was 14...then she discovered Dinah and Sarah....I don't know why she didn't like Billie
This is my favorite video of her. I agree with... "what could have been". She looked so shy and new here.Maybe too shy for the talent she actually had. Maybe that's why she turned to the booze and Lady Gaga look? She didn't need that crap! She could have been the real deal, even if not as famous... or infamous as it turned out. Look what THAT got her.
@YucatanJack I agree with every single thing you said - my feelings exactly. I have not watched this video for a while and I think I feel sadder at her loss every time I watch it. What a voice she had.
She says 'Teach Me Tonight', but she taught all of us what music is..what quality is..what talent is, what a superb character is and what a world star is. She taught us how a singing can so much appeal to senses, how emotions can be resonated with pure sound waves only and how millions can be in tow to show their respect, love and devotion for someone they never met. There are still so many things she will teach us tonight or tomorrow..
She understood jazz & soul at such a young age? All that feeling in her voice...This working class kid from England. Imagine what she could have done at 40...or 50, had she lived? A great artist and a damn shame she's gone. Nice post here too. Loved listening to her sing this standard.

i've never have just a little information abt her till the day i encountered a piece of newspaper posting abt the death of this young singer.for the first time i played one of her videos made as she was alive, actually i've got no impression of her voice and her style as well.even,in the time when the world music award hailed her talent or gave her an award for what he's contributed into world music,i still didn't appropriate her.But as fas as till now,it seems like i have feelings withher music
I hate it when I tell people I'm a HUGE Amy fan they just roll their eyes. So sad most people don't know about all the GREAT music she did before Back to Black. The CD on the Frank Deluxe version with this song on it is my absolute favorite!
She was much too young to have reached her potential, her stage presence seemed a little awkward. I think that Dinah Washington did a better rendition, but that is strictly my taste in tonal quality and presentation.
@2grouchy1 For goodness sake, Amy was only 22 when she did this. She was still a rookie, and hadn't nearly reached her full potential. How brilliant she would have been in another 10 years had the drink and drugs not intervened.
@m06een00 I think I mentioned that she was a little too young to have established a stage presence. I've been around a looong time so I've heard many vocalists which I doubt you've ever heard, so my view may be more subjective than yours
@2grouchy1 I actually love that awkward stage presence. I love the way she moves. She doesn't try to look feminine. I find it really attractive. Vocally she's also really good. what's not to like?
@irada20 You obviously liked her and I didn't especially, and that is the way in music. Put 5 people in a room and let them hear the same song by the same vocalist. You will get 5 very different opinions. It is an intensely personal taste in music. Had she lived longer who knows what kind of singer she would have become, we'll never know.
@aja1383 No such thing as a vocal jazz artist, they can be jazz influenced, and she obviously was, by definition jazz is extemporaneous....you want to hear real jazz at its very finest find Buck Clayton Jam Session and look for Robin's Nest you'll need to get comfortable because it's a little over 17 minutes in length.
@misterjong Many young performers can't handle the glamour, they try a drug and find that they perform better,(they really don't) the first thing you lose is good judgement.
Wow. It felt like a sensual love-making scene. Not in the pornographic sense. But with roses, drawn curtains with moonlight peeping through and candles in the room.
This performance of her clearly shows how seriously she was taking music and singing. So much concentrated on tuning with supreme delicacy in handling lyrics as well as notes. As Jools Holland refers, she perfectly hits the requirements of the song. I will miss her forever.
I would like to suggest that the Leveson inquiry looks into Amy's treatment at the hands of the press. It seemed for several years that she couldn't do anything without papparazzi hounding her. They seemed to know her every move. I wonder if she was hacked?
I was browsing another website when listening to this performance, randomly flicked back and was shocked to realise that it wasn't a studio recording! Amazing!
What an incredible voice and what a tragedy. What's truly sad is that now she won't have a change to grow, develop, and fully come into her own as an artist. At this point she sounded so much like Dinah Washington that 50 years from now she may get lost in the shuffle, when she might have become one of the greatest original voices of her generation.
I have difficulty in convincing myself, that superb talent on stage and the drug & alcohol addict, UK media was chasing 24h/7days/4weeks/12months, were actually the same person. It's so hard to believe, how so many people around her could tolerate such a grievous change in her without doing something serious to stop it.
What made her change her so brutally... So pretty, lovely, such a voice, my GOD!!! and ending dead on alcohol or drugs?? it's unbeliavable.. Such a pity with so many stupids singing around (JB 4 ex)...
... inability to measure phenomena beyond its reach. In other words, just because you can see no proof of the afterlife doesn't mean it doesn't exist; it only means that you can't perceive it.
(I'm not a really a believer, one way or the other, but I recognize the arrogance of suggesting that because I can't see something, it's not there.)
Supposedly, we humans use 10% of our brainpower. That's A LOT of possibility unaccounted for.
Back to Amy. Brilliant, beautiful and very much missed.
I reiterate any comments in lights of infinite order, related to Amy Winehouse, about half as good as she may have appeared. A very rare talent, and even as an international standard at her best, was never sadly, fully appreciated. I await any further unseen/unheard performance.
Why ? Did she have to go . So wonderfull ,Soulfull . My God so sad she's gone .This is truly hard to accept . But she was in a fight for her life . She shined on all of us . However for a little while . I will always remember Amy W .
Such clarity, great rendition. i always love Amy's covers better than the originals. What a powerhouse talent--lyrics, melodies, rewrites, just an incredible loss to the music world and all of us...
Well, all I can say is, what a waste. To die at age 27, just like Hendrix, Joplin and Morrison. I'd have loved to hear what she would be singing in her 40s and 50s. It's just mind boggling. My wife, after listening to this cut, said Amy was the modern Billie Holliday. Again, what a waste.
How can you not get chills while listening to this? You feel every emotion as she belts it out. Teach me, TEACH ME!!! sing it baby! I miss you and that voice and i wished things worked out differently.
WOW OH WOW each and every time i'm still utterly blown away by her otherworldly take on "Jazz" as a medium to connect.. what an amazingly, wonderfully, utterly talented beautifel young lady. I hope both your parents take comfort from the fact that you touched oh so many lives and will continue to do so albeit posthumously.. Your sadly missed Amy, at least we will ALWAYS have your music :) .. sleep well hun .. Dee xx
@joethebar1 You said EXACTLY what I feel about Amy. I discovered her the day she died and I have listened to her EVERYDAY since... in the car, during the day and in bed with my ipod.... I can't figure out what it is about her that I am so drawn to. I keep watching her videos and posting (my family thinks I'm crazy!) I wish people would stop comparing her - she is one of a kind. I SO wish I could have seen her in person. Do I sound obsessed?? lol
@leahsproject my family thinks i am crazy too. i listen everyday. after i went back and listened like you did, i felt sadness for losing an extremely talented, kind artist. you should watch when amy came to dingle. great interview, fabulous fabulous
@leahsproject -Me too! I listen to her music daily. There's nothing else out there with substance the way Amy's was. I'm still in shock and not understanding but heaven had a better plan for her than what she was given in this cruel world. She will most definitely be missed and I will continue to play her music daily for the rest of my days! Such a unique, beautiful, & one of a kind voice!
Such a loss! This kid had the raw material and real potential to become one of THE great female vocalists: just finding her voice and she's gone. So sad.
Amy!
Love it. I honestly never knew Amy was this good as I only saw several drunken performances and it put me off. Since she has died I found myself checking out her music and am so surprised at her talent. I love jazz and this girl was one of the best. What a shame I found her so late. What a shame she died so young.
@nightperuser Wow - when I read what you wrote, I had to do a double take. You said/wrote EXACTLY what I thought I had written because your thoughts are freakishly identical to what I thought/would have written. IDENTICAL! Well said!!! Couldn't have said it better!
@nightperuser My kind of music. If only this was my 1st impression of her I would've listen to her more often. Sadly all I ever heard of her was her drug addictions or how the media always portrayed her, so I never really gave her music a chance. Great talent lost in all this media frenzy.
@nightperuser ,,,She was so talented its crazy.....A really beautiful and brilliant woman that got caught in the trap of drugs and alcohol.........so Phuckin sad and a waste......always a fan.....RIP.......AMY ;( p.s. She was smoking hot back then too......jus sayin ;)
@nightperuser Yes- she could easily have been our generation's version of Ella, Billie Holiday or Dinah!! What a voice.... talent... too bad she could not handle her life- what a waste!!! I love her version of this song!!!
such a short time , but we were the lucky ones , to be around when such a talent ,never to be seen on x fcuk or anything near , amy was the best of our era xxxx
@mrwilsonflo We have to question all those 14 dislikers..I'm very serious..to know what could be found to dislike. add one more amy winehouse hater to the list... lol!
by the way what your mother does in her spare time is no concern of mine.. now piss off you little ratbag.. you are clearly lost here.. dont you have some gaga to gag on ?
oh, look at that, is beautiful .... look at their legs are thin, look at his face ... oh amy .... rests in peace .... I love your music, and hate your disappearance.
MY God, she steams the place up! This is about one of finest jazz renditions I've ever heard from anyone, ever. I can see Billie Holiday giving this the nod.
@Carolab62 Derivative of who? You can't sing anything -- or write anything or paint anything or do anything else - if you don't derive from someone. She was twenty-one. Of course she was following the footsteps. And beautifully.
She only took drugs apart from Cannabis for 4yrs out of 27 and i think people need to give her a break for mucking up a bit. Ive mucked up like her with alcohol and the same drugs but for longer, yet doesn't everyone make mistakes. Surely the people who slag her off don't know or appreciate proper talent when they hear it. We've waited decades and decades for this kind of voice and i probably wont be here when we hear something similiar again. There won't be another Amy. T.Y. 4 the music amy x
@jenniesimpson76 Well said, she was an amazing talent with a beautiful soul, who was a rebel and had her won mind. She smoked weed and drank, then when she met blake, she fell so blindly and crazy in love with a snake she'd do anything to be closer to him, hence the hard drugs, on top of that, she had emotional issues, depression, a history of self harming and eating disoders, and the pressure of fame, girl did well considering. Her talent as a naturally gifted musician was truly astounding x
OMG, i can play this 10 times in a row. Followed Amy since 04'. I get upset that we wont see this kind of talent again, ive never heard anything like it. Ive always listened to Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington etc and anyone through the decades that have a memorable voice. She did what she wanted to do and that was to give something to music, cant wait for her unrealeased material. She had to go through crap to write and sing these songs and i wish people would stop the slagging. xxamzxx

2grouchy1 3 months ago
@2grouchy1 For goodness sake, Amy was only 22 when she did this. She was still a rookie, and hadn't nearly reached her full potential. How brilliant she would have been in another 10 years had the drink and drugs not intervened.
m06een00 3 months ago 2
@m06een00 I think I mentioned that she was a little too young to have established a stage presence. I've been around a looong time so I've heard many vocalists which I doubt you've ever heard, so my view may be more subjective than yours
2grouchy1 3 months ago
@2grouchy1 I actually love that awkward stage presence. I love the way she moves. She doesn't try to look feminine. I find it really attractive. Vocally she's also really good. what's not to like?
irada20 2 months ago
@irada20 You obviously liked her and I didn't especially, and that is the way in music. Put 5 people in a room and let them hear the same song by the same vocalist. You will get 5 very different opinions. It is an intensely personal taste in music. Had she lived longer who knows what kind of singer she would have become, we'll never know.
2grouchy1 2 months ago
@2grouchy1 Well yes. You're right. I like her. This is actually the first video I've seen of her.
irada20 2 months ago
I agree. She's a fabulous jazz artist. What a loss. I am listening to her music now...
aja1383 3 months ago
@aja1383 No such thing as a vocal jazz artist, they can be jazz influenced, and she obviously was, by definition jazz is extemporaneous....you want to hear real jazz at its very finest find Buck Clayton Jam Session and look for Robin's Nest you'll need to get comfortable because it's a little over 17 minutes in length.
2grouchy1 3 months ago
Aaarrrgh!!! Why did she not stay like this??

@misterjong Many young performers can't handle the glamour, they try a drug and find that they perform better,(they really don't) the first thing you lose is good judgement.
2grouchy1 3 months ago
Wow. It felt like a sensual love-making scene. Not in the pornographic sense. But with roses, drawn curtains with moonlight peeping through and candles in the room.
spiritfired 3 months ago
This performance of her clearly shows how seriously she was taking music and singing. So much concentrated on tuning with supreme delicacy in handling lyrics as well as notes. As Jools Holland refers, she perfectly hits the requirements of the song. I will miss her forever.

I would like to suggest that the Leveson inquiry looks into Amy's treatment at the hands of the press. It seemed for several years that she couldn't do anything without papparazzi hounding her. They seemed to know her every move. I wonder if she was hacked?
RobertfromGlasgow 3 months ago
I was browsing another website when listening to this performance, randomly flicked back and was shocked to realise that it wasn't a studio recording! Amazing!
Alexdurrant7 3 months ago
What an incredible voice and what a tragedy. What's truly sad is that now she won't have a change to grow, develop, and fully come into her own as an artist. At this point she sounded so much like Dinah Washington that 50 years from now she may get lost in the shuffle, when she might have become one of the greatest original voices of her generation.
TheBassweasel 3 months ago
I have difficulty in convincing myself, that superb talent on stage and the drug & alcohol addict, UK media was chasing 24h/7days/4weeks/12months, were actually the same person. It's so hard to believe, how so many people around her could tolerate such a grievous change in her without doing something serious to stop it.

... inability to measure phenomena beyond its reach.

Do I sound obsessed?? lol

What a shame she died so young.

@nightperuser My kind of music. If only this was my 1st impression of her I would've listen to her more often. Sadly all I ever heard of her was her drug addictions or how the media always portrayed her, so I never really gave her music a chance. Great talent lost in all this media frenzy.

T.Y. 4 the music amy x
jenniesimpson76 5 months ago
@jenniesimpson76 Well said, she was an amazing talent with a beautiful soul, who was a rebel and had her won mind. She smoked weed and drank, then when she met blake, she fell so blindly and crazy in love with a snake she'd do anything to be closer to him, hence the hard drugs, on top of that, she had emotional issues, depression, a history of self harming and eating disoders, and the pressure of fame, girl did well considering. Her talent as a naturally gifted musician was truly astounding x
bernybuzzboz 5 months ago 3
OMG, i can play this 10 times in a row. Followed Amy since 04'. I get upset that we wont see this kind of talent again, ive never heard anything like it. Ive always listened to Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington etc and anyone through the decades that have a memorable voice. She did what she wanted to do and that was to give something to music, cant wait for her unrealeased material. She had to go through crap to write and sing these songs and i wish people would stop the slagging. xxamzxx
