With a new script by an experienced writer and decent production value behind a good director.... a Manos remake might not be that bad. It's actually not a terrible story.
Debbie (Jackie Neyman) has an interview with some youtube guy if you search her name you will see "El Supercast Episode 39" she says that she is going to be doing a sequel where she gets her revenge and her father is going to play the Master again. Not many hits so publicity among Manos freaks yet. She also mentions a website called "Torgo Lives" and if you go there, the sequal is called "Manos: The Search for Valley Lodge", that will have also in it a WWE Diva in it, hmmmm
While I'm sad to hear they could only find one person from the film, we sure diod luck out that it was Bernie! That guy is hilarious! Thanks Bernie for a great laugh, and thank you for posting it so I could laugh till I cried!
A really enjoyable little documentary. I have to say the advertisers didn't do themselves any favors by interrupting people in mid-sentence that way. If I do remember them, it will be with anger in my heart.
Diane Mehree is the most beautiful woman i have seen in my life. Too bad this movie destroyed her career. She would have been a very beautiful actress :(
Obviously the vandals of texas had no idea that that house was the set for Manos the hands of fate. If they did, they would've written some different stuff.
@spcmn77 I only heard the exchange in reference to both actors were working on Spartacus directed by Stanley Kubrick. There was also a clash between Kirk Douglas and Kubrick regarding writing credit which eventually led to the end of the Hollywood Blacklist.
Aw... I saw the MST3K version. It mainly seems to suffer from bad music, bad voiceovers, snippety and irritated actors, and scenes taking way too long. It's bad, and some of it's going to be bad forever. But a good editor, dub cast, and some good, scary music might turn "Manos" from a horribly bad movie into a half-decent horror flick.
So... which is worse: Making the worst film ever made, *paying* to see the worst film ever made... or helping to create the worst film ever made and considering it your 'glory days'?
@JoeStracke At least they went out and did something....I don't think Bernie Rosenblum sees this as his "glory days." i think he sees it as that goofy thing he did back in 1966 that has made him semi-famous after years of forgetting about it.
First MST3K I watched... Oh my! I think everybody should see this movie in both versions actually though I be nice.. sure first the MST3K version so the hurt is less. Slightly!

I filtered out the hiss, but it was lacking the "haunting" factor with the hiss. Added in a slight room dynamic variation, a slight echo, and a very slight reverb.
The less haunting version with just the hiss removed is here.
"Actually, according to his wife, Harold Warren was talking about doing a sequel because of the notoriety that the movie had gained from MST3K. He then died before having the chance to make it."
He talked about doing a sequel if the movie was a hit, not because of the MST3K show. The Manos MST3K episode came out in 1993, and Hal Warren died in 1985 so I doubt he saw it...
Let's hoist a glass of beer for the film students. While the film scholars make sure we remember and appreciate the gold nuggets of bygone eras, the film students make sure we remember and appreciate those bits of pyrite as well!
The Capri Theater! By the time I was old enough to know of this theater in the late 70's, it was quite rundown in a rundown part of downtown El Paso. They showed cheesy second run films, and Godzilla and Bruce Lee flicks. My sisters worked in the concession stand over the years there, by the time I was old enough to take my turn to work there they closed it down.
Actually, according to his wife, Harold Warren was talking about doing a sequel because of the notoriety that the movie had gained from MST3K. He then died before having the chance to make it.
Apparently, Warren still felt that the movie was actually good.
@Jenga666 I know, right? Even though this is unarguably one of the worst films to have ever been produced (if not THE worst) it's heart-wrenching to think that those set pieces and locations are nothing more than dilapidated, graffiti-covered relics that nobody pays any attention to now.
I really do wish this documentary was a longer. It's too bad that it seems like a lot of the stuff about Manos is kind of lost in time and a lot of the people associated with the movie are gone and all that. Despite the fact that it is a terrible movie, you kind of want to know a lot about it, or at least I do. This was only like a small taste, just enough to fill a tiny bit of that wonder about the movie.
In either case, it was a good documentary. Just wish there was more.
I wish it was longer too. I wish they'd mention some more of the other tidbits of info that I've heard about it: like they couldn't record sound on set so everything was dubbed later by only a few people. And about all the bugs attracted to the lights while filming at night. And how Torgo was supposed to be a semi-menacing satyr.
I'm glad I finally got to see the documentary of this thing, I wish someone would go a little more in depth about John Reynolds, since his story seems so tragicly interesting. I keep looking on the Torgo sites. Thanks for posting this!
Not all of the folks involved are lost. Diane Mahree (Margaret) lives near Telluride and is a friend of my second-cousin. My wife and I crashed with her when we attended the festival one year. She's pretty cool.
I'm so glad to find this here! I heard about the documentary, and since I'm one of those "unhinged" fans of Manos/Mst3K, naturally I was intrigued. Great job! I'm so glad the history of the making has been immortalized as well.
Despite the many offerings in the MST3K ouvre, Manos still stands out as the worst of the very worst. I LOVE the characters. I love the film. It's one I return to watch. It's a winner at being a loser!
I know this is really about the movie itself but they RUSH through the Mystery Science Theater 3000 connection. If not for that show this movie would have had maybe only 5% of the recognition it got.
I didn't know this existed. I was looking on IMDB to see if R Lee Ermy was in Appocolypse Now (he was) and I found a page called "Hotel Torgo"... I was like could it be? And it was! and then I came here to watch it!
MTHOF was one of the better MST3K movies. Its right up there with Cave Dwellers and the Pod People, a real classic! The music in MTHOF was wonderful! A horrible movie? No. A beautifuly bad movie that you'll want to watch again and again? Yes.
