  • Being adopted, being Korean & Black, being told "not to tell anyone you are adopted", being told not to tell anyone you were born in Korea, being raised in the hood, being teased, chased, and beat up almost everday for being too yellow to be Black, being adopted for being to Brown to be Korean, now at 52 yrs old, I'm just being unable to put roots down anywhere, & if anyone asks, the bible says I'm identified with Christ...but even that doesn't resolve my issues of race & self identity.

  • @soojatoo

WOW I am kind of sorry for you. I cant believe you ahave been feeling like that for 52 long years

  • The kids are between a rock and a hard place. People are happy to give an orphan a family, and to give a couple who cant have kids a family, that they just put the 2 parties together and cross thier fingers and hope for the best. They don't tell you that adopting a kid from a different race and raise them far away from thier own race. Were they are different and the only one of their kind, can put the zap on a kids head. They might develop mental problems because of it.

  • i think there is a big hole in his logic.asian is considered a high standard of beauty for girls in that sense hes wrong but for men then yes he is right since the standard for handsome men in america is always going to be black denzel will smith or white brad pit etc.same thing for hispanics its gonna be white hispanics like ricky martin or black mixed like arod but never native american/aztec like goerge lopez for men at least.

  • This principle also goes for BIRACIAL relationships! If you two are scared to talk about race with each other then you won't talk about it with the kids and problems will occur!

  • Culture is who you are, where you're from, and how you were raised.

    Race is just genetic.

I may have Chinese ancestors, but I'll always identify myself as a 3rd-generation California girl

  • @snowballmouse Actually, there's another theory. Instead of seeing genetics and "culture" as mutually exclusive, there are many who suggest that the two are linked. There was a bird study in which a specific bird species sung a song which was passed from one generation to the next. In the study, they removed the parents and the baby birds eventually sung something quite different. With each successive generation however, the song came closer and closer to the original.

  • @SuddenCatharsis

I wonder about this myself. Some of my natural mannerisms are very similar to some of my friends who grew up in asian cultures. It's also physically easier to speak Japanese or Chinese words for me than it is to pronounce some English ones, even though English is the only language i really know. I think the physical structure of the body has a huge influence on culture.

  • one thing about americans that i cant wrap my mind around is the whole "wears shoes in the house"

    its mindblowing

im all like, wait a tick....

"you dont take off your shoes in the house"

    and theyre all like "noooooo...."

    and im all like

    "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH~!!!"

lolz for real though its weird for an azn in an americans house

  • that isnt an american thing, that depends on the individual household. In my family, we always take our shoes off at the door. When I go to friends' homes I almost always take my shoes off as well. but you're right, some people don't mind so much. all depends!

  • @ShardedFire

lol...i have friends from peru who are like that..so its not just americans. but i always take my shoes off regardless when i go to their house, cuz i feel uncomfortable n its nasty.. but canadians take their shoes off..at least the houses ive been in. so i guess it depends on the family

  • Racism is always important.

  • I think you mean RACE?

  • Thanks Dr Crumbley. Great Video.

  • although I agree that children need to learn about race especially with interracial adoptions... but the sad and sick thing is that it is still necessary because of peoples ignorance and intolerance.

  • It is a fact that non-white Americans face a greater degree of racial discrimination in the U.S.

  • Very well said. Talking about race will always be necessary in American culture.

  • Race and racial discrimination is a reality we all have to face, admittedly in varying degrees. But to say any one person experiences racism more than another, or doesn't have to think about race more than others, is a form of stereotyping and discrimination all it's own. Every person's situation is unique, though some experiences may be similar, these kinds of things should always be taken into consideration in my opinion.

  • If you're saying that white people face the same challenges as people of colour, then you're just plain wrong.

  • @NaturalGrace

Living in the same space, whites WILL face challenges just as an authority figure will be challenged by those jealous or mistaking his/her prerogatives.

The hot, rich chick at school will have enemies!

Challenges come in different forms. Because whites are at the top of the hierarchy that doesn't make them exempt from bashing or burden.

  • I am white and I think about race all the time. It deeply disturbs me that even today racism has such a strong hold on people and discrimination continues. Race is something I consider a way to describe an appearance, and maybe cultural background, but to define a person's personality or deny them their individuality because of race is disturbing. I also have to deal with people assuming I am racist because I am white.

  • I think its problematic because white people for the most part dont really have to think about race.

  • @Applebaum Most Americans have no desire to go live in other countries.

  • @Applebaum Untrue.

Being accused as the innate racists in the US, whites normally have to think about race when encountering folks of other ethnicities. Good intentions or tact mean nothing between members of different ethnicities if one suspects offense & the minority normally does.

An example is describing a black person as "articulate". It now means that you've never seen a bright black person. It no longer means just "articulate".

  • very well said. i wish these clips were longer.

  • "gaps in their personality". wow, that is an incredibly accurate way of defining/describing it. insightful guy.
