  • Oh man I miss this guy

  • Watching Lopez play drums makes me want to play drums :)

  • flawless

  • hes gr8

  • epic

  • Martin you're the best!

Opeth is not Opeth without you.

  • I agree with you

  • @alteragnostik Agree.

  • I remember Mikael mentioning that this is his least favorite song. I never understood why.

  • @octavarium008 Least favorite Opeth song overall or just off this album? I've always loved this song, people give it too much shit for being trippy and experimental with the voice effects.

  • @CrackeTheSkull I believe just off this album.

  • @octavarium008 Wreath is my least favorite song off that album personally. It's a little bit too bland and repetitive. Still a good song though.

  • @CrackeTheSkull Actually he said it was his least favorite song he'd written and to listen to, though he enjoyed playing it.

He said he always felt that the song never flowed very well and especially the last minute and a half of it was just too jumpy and ADD.

  • @apocalist420 Yes indeed

  • this is my favourite opeth song

  • I find it funny how the prog bands that are the lower on the technicality scale always sound much better and are more memorable

Example pink Floyd was far less technical than yes but they are far more memorable

Opeth is far less technical than say dream theater but they still make better songs

  • his drumming for opeth is so great i cant even compare it to any other metal drummer or progressive

  • @phsyco78 tbh axe is the best thing thats happened to opeth

  • @klynt23 I'd say Mikael's the best thing that happened to them. Not originally his band...I'm liking Axe more and more, but Lopez is one of a kind. Liking his new band Soen.

  • I'm fucking tired of people comparing Lopez and Axe. They're both competent enough to play in Opeth, and I'm pretty fucking sure Mikael is qualified to choose the right man for the job.

  • theres just somethin about the way he plays that makes me feel like thats the way i would play if i was his place... and yet im pretty sure if i actually was in his place i wouldnt come up with something even half as good. i guess his style really appeals to me

  • yes, there may be technically better drummers out there, but none have the feel that Lopez does

  • Comment removed

  • He just shit all over Axe.

  • Look at his eyes at the end of videos , show who's a real drummer.. who's the best..

  • His band SOEN with fucking Steve Digiorgio!!! waiting to listen them

  • @KarateMastR57 He's got a band right now, their looking for a label, you should definitely check them out. their called Soen.

  • he is 1 of my favorite drummers with nick menza XD

  • I love this song! Especially the "outside in the park" waltz part.

  • Fucking AWESOME!

  • crazy shit that's amazing

  • siiiick groove.

  • Awesome!! Now keep going. LOL Theres some wicked double kicks coming!!

  • My favourite drummer of all time!

  • Beautiful drumming!!

  • What a talent.

    Just sooooooooooooooooooooooo overlooked and underappreciated.

  • Ghost Reveries sounds The BEST!!!

  • cuz the cymbals sound latin & exotic

  • the bass drums sound very heavy

  • the snare and toms sound jazzy

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • for blackwater park the snare sound is more because of the way it is in the mix. its really low and has heaps of reverb. it probably had a similar sound to the one in this video acoustically

  • Hi Hat is Sabian AA 14" Medium Hats

  • I need to know what hi hat he uses

  • Progressive Death Metal ²

  • So smooth. So crisp. So clean.

    <3

  • I consider their music "Progressive Metal"

That's what it's considered in the Classic Rock magazines.

  • Progressive Death Metal.

  • this drummer is not human! I love his drumming! *u*

  • what size is the snare? I want to buy Premier Modern Classic, same like him, but confused between 13"x7" or 14"x7". Please help!

  • @andrietube he used to have both i think. for reference, maybe he used the 13" in damnation and 14" in deliverance.

  • Hi.. thanks. And do you know what snare and size he used in Blackwater Park? it's the snare's sound that I am looking for.

  • @andrietube i have no idea about the exact dimensions, but it's a 14" for sure. i also had the same dilemma before, i was desperate to find the exact snare/s lopez used, but in the end i decided to get a good VERSATILE sounding 14" snare. if you want that to sound like a 13", you can just put moongel or other muffling devices on it. besides, drum sounds in the albums are always "treated", meaning they've been processed to sound better. so you don't have to lose sleep over it. good luck.

  • @metalmuhlisha yeah good advise! thanks again.

  • the guy was awesome in opeth. just watching this clip you can fully appreciated the subtlety and nuance he brought to the band. his appeal to me is in the groove he can encompass around the band and hold some pretty crazy stuff together. if his new material is plain old death metal blasts i will be disappointed. im not saying i dont like death metal or the drumming style but a hundred guys can do that as good as him. only a few could fill his spot in opeth.

  • he left cuz he had anxiety issues due to his health problems, which made it hard for him to perform live. wat i dont get is y u call Opeth's new stuff "mellow progressive ballad crap" when u say u still like em... Opeth have greatly progressed since their so-called death metal days, and have become better than ever, so ur judgement of them is very wrong.

  • I don't know if you heard, but he's back in the death metal scene. He is working on a new album with Fifth to Infinity I believe and it's due to come out this year.

I still like their new stuff but I prefer their older material of course as I am more of a straight forwards death metal fan. Deliverance was a great album and had the perfect balance between death metal and progressive elements. Now, there's more progressive in their music than death metal and that's what I don't like.

  • I love him...

    Very great drummer..

  • I like this guy v much. His feeling is something excellent. And also I think that the snare he uses sounds very good ... someone knows where he is?? What happened to him?

  • Comment removed

  • Still the grooves, the feel of his drumming leaves me inspired. Here's to some new fucking recordings!

  • Martin Lopez is amazing. Great guy, brilliant drumming, but hey - he served Opeth well. Opeth had drummers before him, and it shall surely last after him. The only pity is that we don't get to see much more of him.

  • Comment removed

  • You can join the others and eagerly wait for Fifth to Infinity's upcoming album; which is much anticipated as a raw and real death metal album.

  • It's awesome how he can bring so much groove to it!

  • he makes it look so easy....

  • I always thought he was the perfect fit for Opeth, but I guess the migraines and the complex with large crowds was just too much after a while. He is such an awesome, creative drummer.

  • this show you that blast beats is not the tecnique of the best drummers in this world

  • I miss Martin Lopez too, he was one of a kind. Enough of the bickering at Axe though, at least give the guy a chance. He's an outstanding drummer but people are too busy complaining to let him show us what he can do. He can't help he's not Lopez lol.

    Geeez...

  • his rhythmics are like hell yeah

  • great drummer...I agree

  • I think he is great but I also like the Axenrott.

  • The best drummer in the world. Plays completely with his soul.. no needless speed like dave lombardo. It all flaws through his body and mind to his hands and he creates such awesome toons which is pure bliss. I hope he is well now i wanna listen to his music.

  • I agree whole heartedly with everything you said sir. However, no need to slam Lombardo. Also talented in his own way :)

  • yep he is talented but i just don't like his style.

  • dave doesn't needlessly play with speed.

    He is a legend.

    But martin lopez is brilliant

  • @illinairr martin is pheonomal but dont diss lombardo that man is a pioneer.

  • @illinairr

My friend, i agree with you... this guy is a monster drummer....

  • @illinairr "Needless speed"? Lombardo doesn't play Opeth, he plays Slayer, for which he's excellent. Different standards, two very different drummers.

  • @illinairr how do Engrish?

  • @illinairr you shouldn't call martin the best drummer in the world. there are way too many drummers in this world to determine that. but i do agree that martin is a truly amazing drummer and it is rare for many to be as diverse as he is.

  • @illinairr i agree with you, but dave lombardo is an absolutely amazing drummer :)

  • @illinairr i beg to differ. he may be great but hes not really THE BEST, thats a really big title. hes certainly up there though

  • It's too bad there are not other videos of him out there. Full songs on youtube. If anything their Lamentations DVD is a good example of what you'll get from him.

  • fuuuck if only this was the whole song

  • Gotta love him,Lopez is One of the best metal drummers ever! He is really Genies, this guy knows how to combine different styles From Latin to oriental to Metal, So much soul ...I miss him!

    Opeth need Lopez!

  • I KNOW!!! I love Lopez

  • Martin Lopez, if by any chance you ever read this: I love watching you play man. Hope you are well, and I wish you luck in whatever you turn your talented hand to next.

  • what health issues caused him to leave opeth?

  • I think it was blood poisoning and panic attacks

  • He is a natural. like fish in the sea...

    sabor latino carajo!

  • too bad he got sick. he deserves all of it.

  • After seeing the Lamentations DVD, Martin Lopez is the drummer that made me want to be better at what I do, and I'm proud to say he's easily the most influential drummer in my life.

  • I agree to a certain extent.

Ever since I started listening to Opeth, I've been closely following Lopez's drumming, and because of his playing, I've learnt to play with even more groove and play much more relaxed than ever before.

  • Martin Lopez makes me want to play drums... and I'm a guitar player! Real talent always looks effortless. I've watched this video nearly 10 times now. I'd love to be in a band with this guy.

  • Couldn't of said it better myself.

  • Certainly a kick ass drummer

  • Definitely one of my favourite drummers. When I listen to him play on the albums i'm just constantly rewinding parts and looking like a grinning idiot. Just plays so well and everything is so imaginative. I hope he gets a band soon.

  • is it just me or does he have really long arms?

  • martin lopez has awesome grooves

  • He is on par with Portnoy and D. Carry

  • i like him better than portnoy tho

  • POTAQUEOPAREO³

  • oh my god this gives me chills!

  • best drummer ever?

    fool.

    he's an amazing drummer.

    one of my top 5.

    but not the best ever.

    that's ridiculous to say.

  • perfect! Best drummer ever!

  • is martin lopez mexican???

  • His family is from Uruguay, he was born in Sweden then moved to Uruguay at a young age, then back to Sweden.

  • stress and anxiouty can make you sick, mabe he got sick of opeth after a few panic attack's he's a drummer so he has that faster thinking and it can freek you out and it was time to move on i don't know but i play guitar and have felt that way so my own opinion could fuck my comment up because i didn't take time to read the other comment's but i get sick around alot of people and mabe him to? he's a good drummer that's for sure

  • I have both as well. its hard to be a guitarist and have anxiety

  • definitely. anxiety caused me to quit my band, i just couldn't handle it at all. I really relate to Martin Lopez for that reason.

  • i hate crowds

you think i might feel the same thing and get an anexiety attack in a scenary?

    i wouldn't like it

  • This does not sound nearly as dark with out the guitars and vocals,weird...

  • yep :D isnt it great, thats what opeth stand out.

  • No, it wasn't that way. I am telling the truth, I swear.

I have the interview here, but in spanish (I'll send it to you)

When I have time, I will translate the part when He said why really he left the band (it's in the page 3 and 4)... sorry, I cannot do it now. I promise you I'll do it as soon as I can.

  • can you send it to me too please?

    You've made me curious.

  • can you send it to me too

i really miss lopez in the band

    =)

  • No, isn't any health's problem.

In fact, he is working with other bands from here. He simply didn't want be in Opeth anymore.

If you want, I will send the interview to you too (when I translate it, of course)

  • ????

  • In spanish?

Do you have the interview in spanish?

  • Yes, I have.

Hey... why someone put "poor comment" in my comment? I'm telling the true...

  • u got it wrong mate, but only slightly. he left opeth because of health issues and he couldnt cope with the touring that opeth needed to put out, and subsequently left. if he joins another band it will be purely because what they are doing uses less energy so that he can cope with it.

  • It's long... but I'll do it, yes.

Besides, it'll serve me to practice my english (ñem)

  • ill miss his work with opeth

  • Couldn't agree more

  • You guys all fail miserably.

  • fuck hes brilliant! please return to Opeth dude!

  • I would say he is original, not going to argue about it but good look finding someone with a similar style to his.

  • so sad he's out now....the most original drummer ever..

  • Oookay, that's quite an overstatement. I agree his technique is amazing and he's definitely one of the best drummers opeth as ever had, but he's certainly not the most original.

  • give me an example....someone else that sound better than him....

  • Danny Carry...

Still Martin fuckin ruled. I hope his mental health gets better so that he can return to Opeth!

  • it wasnt mental.. he has a rare blood disease..

but still, i agree. i hope he returns.

  • It wasn't any health's problem. They lied, I don't remember why.

I'm form Uruguay (Martin's country) and a few months ago I read a metal's magazine, because it had an inverview with Lopez... and he said that he left the band because it was becoming very famous and he felt unconfortable with the demands that it brought.

If someone wants the interview, just ask... (although it's in spanish)

  • you have the interview? any chance you would translate it and send it to me? :)

  • From what i've heard, he had that blood disease.

But i also heard that he had panic attacks as fast as they came up to the stage.

  • listen to his playing on the first singing part of deliverance, that is certainly origional and phanominal at that!

  • or the outro to deliverance.. its a hell of a lot more complicated than it looks. try it.

  • i have, i am a drummer, and i can't play it. It's just not freaking fair!!

  • very very nice! I love opeth!!!

  • My hero

  • And by the way its not in an odd time signature. its 4/4.

  • Oh well. It sure as hell sounds extremely complex. Mr. Lopez makes it sound more than just 4/4.

  • As much as you are.

  • Agreed, hes a great drummer, Top 10 in the world almost.

  • Oh and btw my comment about Lopez making it sound complex was a complement, not an insult to him. It's hard to make 4/4 sound odd.

  • What's even cooler about this is the odd time signature.

Martin Lopez is one of those underrated drummers who would wipe out all of the hype drummers like Jason Bittner and Chris Adler.

By these underrated drummers I mean Dennis Röndum, Tobias Persson etc. I dunno about Kai Hahto. His reputation is growing.

  • Your here saying all this but forgetting that comparing is the lowest thing you can do to a drummer, they should not be compared, they show be respected. Adler is respected and got hype for it, but is still a great drummer.

  • You are right. But it's sad people hype out drummers and leave no space for others like Martin Lopez and Dennis Röndum.

  • i can see what ur sayin hes not AS hyped as adler but Opeth fans know him as a drumming god, which im sure has brought a smile to his face more then once

  • Yeah, all true.

  • fuck... i luv this intro!

  • damn i love martin lopez...:P

  • Martin is a superb drummer.

But it takes a good drummer to write the stuff, and a better drummer to replicate it, and I do think that Axenrot is wasily as good/probably better than Martin. Just look at his work with Bloodbath, his blastbeats mixed with Jazz are incredible. Its like Opeth + Flo Mounier.

  • speaking of Lopez, where the hell did he go? whats his project called? Lopez, dude, im gonna go emo if you dont show up or something. (i put emo to refer as "going sad" note:im not emo.....or gay.)

  • "Blood disorder", anxiety attacks, and fear of flying. Touring ~200 days a year probably wore him down the most. Band has changed quite a bit since he joined back in '97; when he was just an Opeth fanatic trying to get in the band.

  • cdrumzi WHY NO DYNAMIUCS , it's a pro , look the flow , rythmme , easy drums ! deliverance drums for me the best riffle !

  • Let's see what the fuck Axenrot will do.

  • Lopez is one of my, if not my favorite drummer. On that list I also include Thomas Haake, Gene Holgan and Danny Carey.

  • too bad he left opeth :(

  • He got blood poisoning as well as having a panic attack on their last tour together... he aint playin for now... I personally think he is better then portnoy

  • well (in my opinion) portnoy is not that great of a drummer cuz he uses no dynamics

its guys like lopez and tomas haake who i like (as far as metal)

  • This guy is one unique, technique-wise bastard.

  • As far as I am concerned, there are two drummers. Neil Peart and Martin Lopez. No one gets close to these two!!
