  • Why dont they do DCI.

  • The comment war is more interesting than the video. I instructed a drum line last year at a school where the kids were expected to play a show band style of drumming. I grew up on corps style drumming so I was a fish out of water. But in the end it worked out well. I brought in a guy who knew how to do all the "dance" stuff and the end result was pretty great, an excellent marriage of intricate precision and choreographed fun. I'm amazed that drum lines don't so it.

  • I swear corps style/traditional style band people on youtube is like bloods and crips.

  • time bomb

  • glad I learned why HBCUs do the things they do. At JSU the instructor gave us the basic that the drumline is pretty much mimic of a drumset. they move that way to keep time :D Before i thought it was just unskillful but now i see that .. we... these brothas and sistas got SOUL :D

  • this sounds like shotgun yo lol

  • Bethune prolly shits on yall

  • i respect every style but i don't like this one. too much visual... i dont like the basses... i prefer dci style

  • @aboyintheblue dci style??? You must mean tonal bass drums....which they do have. Famu uses tonal & scottish bass drums

  • @Geecheeman i prefar drum corps style at all. not only for the bass drum of this video. more serious, more tecnic and less "dance".

    Sorry for my bad english

  • @aboyintheblue this band doesnt focus on dancing much. the dance routines they do is just for extra entertainment in their halftime shows. they do it to appeal to the ypunger audience at the game. its just their tradition. they have been doing dance outines since 1946.

  • Garbage!

  • FOR all of the negative users, stay your asses in the drum corp and dont worry about the HBCU. Our styles are different so we will always clash, Your definition of good music and ours will be different, we march different, everything about our style is different. So pull your head out of your assm and go watch some more videos.

  • this sounds horrible....i would expect better coming from a collegiate drumline....they really remind me of a high school

  • i wish theey would play the cadence spider it would fit there sound and style

  • whats with indoor drums?

  • hahahahahahahahahaha

  • I Keep trying to tell people there is no such thing as "THE WAY" to play drums or music in general. Just listen to sum punk rock alot of those guys can barely play and sing. However those guys do everything from the heart, classically trained musicians hate it. They still have millions of fans regardless. People, it's a diffrent style just like Ohio State but nobody talks about that. Anyway These guys are loved inspite of us youtube watching dci lovin elitist. We have to keep our minds open

  • damn all white ppl do is hate.....famu can show up al yall lil white bands and DCI, dude im n highschool i feel like im arguing with my band director looking at these comments, FAMU will put yall mallets where yall mouth is, o yea the first 4-5 basses are toners and play better than FSU and anybody else for that matter and the last 5 are scotch bass drums and they play unison parts and give the line that thunderish sound........all yall hating crackers get a fucking life.....HUBBA 100

  • @rattlerbaby13 wow, that first sentence is not a racist generalization at all!!!

    1. not all white people hate, and as many black people hate as white people.

    2. why the fuck is it ok for black people to racist now? Would you be ok with it if i just said "oh, well all black people do is hate" and start talking about "all yall lil black bands" ? no, you wouldn't.

    3. There are TONS of black people and people of other races in dci.

    4. Why are you even making this about race?

  • @DancingMonkey12 dude in each dci group ive seen, ive only seen about four or five blacks in each group and some corps with no blacks at all. but do understand your point

  • @TheDragonmaster18 Why arent there many white people on hbcu drumlines?

  • @koolkidDrummer5 cause most whites dont go to hbcu schools. you have to attend a hbcu in order to be in the band

  • @TheDragonmaster18 Not really. ASU (albany state), you dont have to attend the university to march with dem. You have to be in college. I know someone whos going to attend Darton college but march for ASU. theyre just going to have to cross the their drumline(platinum forte).

  • @koolkidDrummer5 is asu's band apart of their music school

  • @TheDragonmaster18 No, Darton is a college in Albany, ga. Albany state is the university. Darton doesnt have a music program so some people marching with dem and cross section in the band and join the band-fortornity

  • @koolkidDrummer5 The fact that there aren't many blacks in corps nor whites in hbcu bands is a cultural/racial manifestation. Simply put, people are molded by the environments they're raised in (surmise what you will from that statement). Obviously, there are exceptions but moreover this dictates peoples preferences...

  • @rattlerbaby13 it depends on what dci band some dci bands have style sum dnt like cavies and cadets have style but i dnt no bout the famu basses beat fsu

  • who gets credit for being close to the next best thing?....At least FAMU's PERCUSSION SECTION is and has been original since they started..

  • regular people who dont know anything about technique like this kind of stuff. but ppl who are in a real drumline know that this is utter trash.

  • A Whatch Ya Mouth! I'm A Memeber of This Drumline and All You Fuckers Do Is Come To Our Videos Talking Shit Cuz Obviously You Find Us Intimidating To You And WHATEVER so Called BUCKETBEATER line Youre Apart of.....Fuck Yall Haters Man, Yall Don't Know Shit About How We Do It At Fam!

  • come to texas we will show how its done

  • @EF2K7 Let's see you march DCI.

  • @KBoe4 Yall Call That Marching?! lol Yeah Right....

  • @EF2K7 Whooooa hold on a second. I wasn't bashing anyone, but you obviously don't realize or have any idea how hard those guys work. Same goes for WGI. Anyone can throw their body around with a drum on. That's not hard. Marching well while playing a triplet roll at 200bpm...that takes a lot of hard work and skill. Much more than this type of stuff...

  • @KBoe4 I'm not gonna continue to go back and forth about this issue because all of our achievements (2 presidential inauguration parades/french bicentinial parade just to name a few) show our prestige. Now what has your band done? lol And for the last time, when did DCI start marching? lol Ight man no disrespect, you guys have yall style and we have ours, if u dnt like it, why do u have to come onto our videos commenting and disrespecting. We clearly pay no attention to any DCI videos lol

  • @EF2K7 I have not said anything bad about your style. On the other hand, you have laughed at countless amounts of hours, sweat, blood and tears put in by thousands of people trying to perfect their playing AND MARCHING. You are nothing short of ignorant to say the things you said and assume "no disrespect" would be taken. It's really easy to put down an activity that you don't do or understand.

  • Comment removed

  • @KBoe4 Wow Guy...ok so what does that make you? You come to a video of my drumline and put it down implying that our "technique" isnt "technique" at all and that "anyone" can do it....Let's be real. And for the record, I am a drummer, and always have been and I do this all the time so actually you're the one who is insulting something or should I say a style tht you don't DO or UNDERSTAND. and you know im correct!

  • @EF2K7 I never addressed your technique. I'm simply saying you need to have more respect for something that people work at EXTREMELY hard. No one deserves to be put down after busting their ass at something like DCI or WGI. Obviously, multiple people feel the same way.

  • @EF2K7 Hey if you like it fine, Personally I like music.

  • @KBoe4

..i learn most cadences as i go along it aint that big a deal haha

  • @groalerable Way to comment something completely irrelevant on a dead thread.

  • @KBoe4 Hahaha...Ive marched DCI!! AND IM in this drumline!!!! Different styles...yes......Different technique.....yes......DCI has edge rudiment wise but level of difficulty marching and playing goes to Traditional

  • @Geecheeman Where did you march in DCI?

  • @Geecheeman Definitely now. I'd like to see you jazz run at 220 BPM while play straight 16 note runs GOOD and loud. That is DCI and is harder than traditional. Try marching to your left, but keeping your upper body perfectly to the front. Try jazz running backwards. Yea. Completely harder than traditional. DCI is completely more difficult than traditional.

  • @KBoe4 actually playing and dancing isnot easy beacuse the dance moves and visuals and notes have to all be in time and you have to be a really good dancer in order to do all of that. you have to have soul and rythm. and you do know that this style has been around since the 1930's. so this is way before DCI was even thought of. and it does take skill hard work and technique to this style. its just a different skill and technique.

  • @TheDragonmaster18 How many times do I have to say "I HAVE NOT SAID ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THIS STYLE." Good Lord, do you guys read?! I'm merely stating my displeasure in the amount of respect given to DCI and WGI performers. They are not given nearly enough credit for the work they put into their art.

  • Comment removed

  • @KBoe4 Athletes???? Really...! lol All I can do is laugh because u actually think DCI is tough? Im a member of this drumline here and BELIEVE ME when I say that we are more of athletes than most football teams! If it isnt tough to do what we do then why does the news stations in this area always cover our preseason drills and performances on television during the sports segment as if we were on the field....

  • garbage

  • 0.o What a weird conversation. Great video though. FAMU on top.

  • shut yo white self up dont ever say anything regarding a hbcu. if you hate the sound so much dont listen to the clip. Go listen to USC if you hate the black sound so much

  • Listen, I'm white and proud of it. I'm not racist. I just really like the way black bands sound in comparison to white marching bands. don't become so damn offended. I was complementing black marching bands. They're unique, why sound like boring ass white marching bands with quads....stick to the single tenor drums...by the way the movie drum line sucked simply because of all of the different variations of base drums....they sounded like my white ass school.....

  • "black" marching bands are nothing but bands that go out and make complete fools of themselves by hopping around and playing like SHIT. now "white" marching bands on the other hand actually like to go out and play music CLEAN and try and look professional. and as far as the quads go why in the hell would anyone march just one quad drum?? thats retarded looking and sounding. theres 6 drums there for a reason and they sound GREAT not boring.

  • Look, you rhymthless idiot. That sounds just like us white people. We can't dance and play at the same time like black marching bands - there's no need for you to be rude and insulting. Black marching bands look awesome on the field and we wish we could perform the way they do. They play all genres of music from classical to hip-hop - while at the same time marching is fantastic formations - while dancing. It's all-around entertainment. Your comments are ignorant and foolish.

  • haha ok cause u just so fucking smart and know everything about marching bands and tenors. but i reality u don't know SHIT. and im not being insulting im just saying the truth, they sound like shit. there drums sound like shit everything they play is garbage, yeah they might look cool when they go out and dance, but whats the point of going out and performing music when it sounds like crap? and by the way im not an idiot and ive got more rhythm then ull ever have dick

  • ur limped dick core styler

  • yup i am. minus the limp dick part

  • Read closely idiot. You obviously lack a worthy education. Your writing skills are questionable. You apparently have slow comprehension skills as well. Now, as I previously wrote. It is my opinion that black marching bands are fantastic in how the perform on the field. White marching bands can not play an instrument and dance at the same time. Black marching bands are unique in this sense. I don't like quads in black bands because it takes away the unique sound they traditionally have.

  • really now?? cause being smart reflects of how a person types?? thats the dumbest shit ive ever heard! and "black" marching bands arent fantastic because they cant play worth shit. my shits sound better than when one of them go out and try to play. and "white" marching bands dont go out and dance because they go out and actually try and play everything good and clean and together, not like poop.

  • Is that the best you can do? insulting me will not make you any smarter. Yes, I have a great education. It is only my opinion. I think black marching bands are awesome. I love the see them perform. It is amazing to me how the members are able to play an instrument very well while dancing. My comments are compliments, not insults. I just prefer not hearing quads because they remind me of how my old schools sound. Don't be so offensive and sensitive.

  • @2244242 I know I'm a little behind on this discussion (about a year actually), BUT...a video to watch if you will...: watch?v=4BC_EIvFL2o&p=6DDC490700C54DD4&playnext=1&index=17 :

Like I said...I'm late on the matter. But...I was perusing through Youtube looking for some college lines to get psyched for football season, and happened upon this FAMU video, and saw your comment. Not to prove you wrong or anything, but to open you up to a whole new world of drumming: WGI. "Dancing and Drumming"

  • u understand us!!!

  • This Is So True...Thanks! Someone with some common sense! All These Haters Out Here Hating...and wouldn't last a day in our "BAND CAMP" (which is for high schoolers) lol

  • you guys suck, y the fuck you would have more than 5 basses. ever heard of splits? no technique what so ever.

any one can play this thrash

  • Guarantee You Can't! What Lame Ass Bucket Line Are You On? Never Mind It Doesn't Matter! No One Cares!

  • truth hurts doesn't it, no technique what so ever, its a bunch of people hitting drums trying to look cool. learn some bass splits. oh wait there is no splits for more that 5 bass drums. do you even know what a bass split is ?

  • Get Real!I'ma show u how ignorant u are! There are only 4 BD'S Which are called Tonals...ever heard of em?? then there are another set called scoth bass drums ...ever heard of em?? every section plays a different part! its not our fault your sorry ass band doesn't have enough people in it to have more than 5 people on a bass line....cuz no one wants to be in a boring lame, stiff ass Band!!

  • id rather be in a band that requires technique than some bucket beater band like this. it still dosent change the fact that there is no bass splits. your the one that started this arugument. my first comment is true thats y you are pissy

  • You really have no clue how much more technique it takes to be in my band than it does yours! I took a second to take a look at ya bucketline I guess and the things yall were doing...pitiful! just down right high school! lol so therefore, the videos prove it all and therefore thats the reason we're world known and you guys aren't! and who gives a rats ass about a bass split! u should concentrate on simply rolling first cuz from the vid yall obviously can't even do that! lmao!

  • world known for 100 of the shitest drummers, im going to post a vid to shut you up and i want you post one to see if you can talk the talk

  • ok im done here because i have no need to upload a vid because we already have tons on here and u wonder why u don't ...no one wants to videotape that lame ish! Everyone loves the Hundred! and u might as well just get on board homeboy!

  • from what ive seen and heard this style requires no skill.

but you guys are good at the style you play. if you have read my first comment right i was not telling this line off.

i hate the show band style. i am more biased towards corps style. if you look up " Blue Devils drum line" or "Phantom Regiment drum line" any dci band for that matter you will see my reasons for my first comment

watch the video called tim jackson in my profile and you will see a true drummer

  • World-known we arent. Man no offense but you really need to read on your history. FAMU was the only US representation to the French bicentennial. The Marching 100 is know from all walks of life. From the prestige to the third world country!!! Just trying to give you some history before saying they are not world known. Also FAMU is the only HBCU band to ever win the sudler trophy ask " the heisman trophy for all collegiate bands. Just helping you out, but you have your opinion.

  • I'm pretty sure france isn't a Third world country there buddy...I'm not hating cause I respect southern style drumlines, it's not my preference but they do some cool stuff, your argument is just super whack

  • I understand your comment. As in saying, I am not saying France is a third world country because I know it is not. I have traveled to third world countries such as Thailand and yes they have heard of FAMU. As for calling the comment whack, that is your opinion. But before you go reading the words understand what I meant in the comment.

  • you gotta understand that this PERCUSSION SECTION is an experience..u cant base your opinion off of a youtube video..You have to see this group in live action then maybe, just maybe, your opinion will change..i respect DCI..i really really do..but i hate it when ppl downplay showstyle percussion sections based on how they look..isnt that a prejudice?..why does everyone HAVE to look and sound like DCI to be good nowadays..its all a respect thing in the end...btw the "J-stroke" is a technique.....

  • the J-stroke is a beautiful, usefull technique.

  • read and learn you intelligent person...lol. this is the normal setup of an HBCU drumline. the bassline usually has anywhere from 6 to 10 basses. the first 4 or 5 (tonals) provide the splits, and the last 3 to 5 (called flats/drops) are deeper and play the unison part. now imagine how combining the tonal/split line and the unison would enhance the sound and effect of the line! see, if you take time to appreciate our craft you might realize that we're percussionists too, not just drumbeaters

  • and furthermore, just you didnt hear anyslpits in THIS video doesnt showstyle lines are incapable of playing them.dont take ONE video as a representation of a whole style.

  • @chords4dayz i love that u said that because we do the same thing at our school and people dont understand!

  • This is going to be my last time commenting on this video and repsonding to so many idiots. I can not believe how stupid you people are. I AM NOT HATING on FAMU's band. I've always liked FAMU. My comments were mostly complimentary of black marching bands, not insults. You people simple hold truth to the stereotype that black people CAN'T READ. You're lacking in comprehension skills. You're looking for all the negative rather than positive inserts. It's pointless with you people.

  • That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard

  • Kiss my white booty mackman06, It's my opinion and my right to have it. Black marching bands have always had a unique sound of their own. In a parade, you always knew when a black band was coming around the corner. These guys sound like my school...white to the core....you guys need to get your soul back because have crossed over into white boy land.....freaking jokes!

  • TRASH

  • Comment removed

  • FAMU's percussion isn't what is use to be. Don't be so offended. I prefer the old-school way black band sound instead of the current day want-to-be "Drumline" sound. Black marching bands sound more like white marching bands now. By the way, I have a Bachelor's from Princeton, an MBA from Yale, and I'm currenlty working toward my Ph.D. Judging by the way you write, I seriously doubt you are as smart as you think you are. Face it, black people want to be white. Just listen to your bands.

  • wow all them degrees and u can still come off as a dumbass.

  • you're working towards all those degrees but you're still an idiot.

  • May I ask what the hell you know about what quads are supposed to sound like? I mean come on... Other than the fact that that has to be the most racist comment I've seen on the site in quite a while, I have to agree with buckmixon. You don't have to listen to these guys. I'm white too, but you don't see me bad-mouthing them. Do you actually even play quads?

  • look dude, what ever, I went to Princeton and I can assure you that we absolutely loved watching black marching bands perform, it seems like such a wonderful tradition for their race. All I'm asking is why are they making such a great effort to move away from something so unique to their own. White bands are boring, they always have been. this is falls along the lines of black people trying to be white....now it's showing in their music....FAMU's percussion suck now!

  • yall still not betta than A&T drumline
