@LadyWuzzy - think most people will prob spit their coffee out @ your comment Ladywuzzy....Kerri Strug had the best form, GRACE and dance ability??? lol
Back in Olga's day, they might have trained these routines over concrete, giving one much more incentive to catch the bars. Applaud Amanda's composure.
She was a great gymnast. She, Miller, Phelps, were really the 3 best U.S gymnasts during this quad. Dawes, Moceanu, Strug, all had bad form and were very overrated. Borden and Phelps were alot like Miller, nice clean form, good exucution, nice dance on beam and floor, good expression, and nice fluidity and elegance too.
Dominique Dawes was the only member of the Mag 7 to have all 7 of her scores used. She was critical to the success of that '96 team, many commentators have said it repeatedly. She was just regarded as the other Dominique so people didn't really see it. And the only reason why Dominique Dawes has bad form, is because she's bowlegged. There are pictures of her recently, in short dresses and you can really see now because she wears heels and is not barefoot anymore with a leotard.
Strug did not win the gold for them. They had the gold wrapped up before she vaulted. Galieva needed 9.975 on floor if she didnt vault and the highest score on floor was Lilia's 9.887. The gold was never in danger if Strug didnt vault. That famous vault does not change that her gymnastics quality is overrated.
That is fine. If you dont care about form, technique, artistry, orginality, variety, or anything memorable in gymnatics other than power (the only thing Strug has) than it is your perrogative.
@millerowns I think Kerri's form and aesthetics were at its best when she trained with Nunno. She just couldn't handle the pressure of competing with Shannon, which I actually feel frustrated her more than her training and competing with Kim Z and Betty Okino.
It is very unfortunate in her only ever World or Olympic event final she had this happen. However I think Kathy is being very generous to say "she really did have a chance for a medal". The bronze medal score ended up being a 9.850. I highly doubt Amanada was capable of a score like that or higher.
Yeah I love her too but I cant see her having outrageous enough difficulty to get a score that high. I am not sure if her routine even had the content to have a 10 SV in finals.
Even without that release move didn't her routine seem really really short? No transition to the low bar....or was it left out after the fall?
But what a fighter. That belly-flop onto the mat didn't even phase her!!
Maybe no EF medal here, but you got your gold in Atlanta!!

@LadyWuzzy You must really love Strug. I loved her too, but Miller and Moceanu were miles ahead with form, execution, grace, etc.

I always hated Amanda's salute. It looked like she was trying to fly or something. haha. But I loved her as a gymnast.

What I want to know is why the hell MLT wasn't spotting her on her first release move.

Borden was one of the top 3 US gymnasts during this quad? Are you out of your mind?

@vontrappster Well, during 1994 she was. Kerri was out with the back injury.

You are right. I love Amanda but she qualified in 5th with a 9.725 and without extra difficulty I don't see her winning a medal.
