  • Hmmn why are all your related videos chicks with their jugs half out? lol

Good in depth review though fella

  • @techguruuk

    lol bahhhhhhhhh

  • help plz :(.... i'm using ubuntu 10.10 bt slow like hell aftr 4 days use.... plz suggest another best OS.... i need os for daily use not for games :)... plz help

  • @DKtheHuNk

windows xp!!! nar.... i dunno man... whatever you like....pclinuxos is good and stable, opensuse etc

  • @Linux4UnMe bt which version of linux ? best for use :)..plz

  • @DKtheHuNk You might want to try "Zorin". It is a good Linux distribution that comes with a program called "Remastersys" that allows you to back up the entire operating system including your personal files just as it is. It will make an "iso" file for you to burn as an "iso" image to a DVD disc. Just make sure you use a burning software program that will allow you to burn it as an image to the disc. You don't want to simply write or save the the file to the DVD as data, or it won't work.

  • @bobbyknight1970 tnx fr ur reply :D bt nw i'm using window xp ftw :P later gonna buy intel i5 :) with my blog money's :P nirmalmaza. blogspot .in/

  • @DKtheHuNk Linux mint :P or ubuntu 11.10. keep tweakin unitil its fast enough for ya :P

  • I think Mint Cinnamon is the way to go. Its what Mint 12 should have been like to begin with. I hope thats a taste of what there going with for mint 13.

  • @dadio2002

    yep

  • @Linux4UnMe In GNOME mint, it doesn't make sense to have the shell and the classic menu at the same time. Other than the window switching feature, but that can be done in compiz. Im pretty new to Linux and been testing out distros for a week now and still haven't figure which is best for me. Bad timing getting into Linux with all these changes happening lol. Im thinking Mint 11 or Ubuntu 10.04/or 10.10 for the time being untill we see the new LTS. While I like Cinnamon, GNOME3 needs maturing,

  • @dadio2002

yeah it is bad timing to get into linux at the moment... I know mint 13 will rock now that they got cinnamon matured more... forget what you see here... it has changed yet again slightly lol. Maybe a kde distro eh? i can say with all certainty that kde 4.8 is stable, no weirdness like before and is a hell of alot faster

  • @Linux4UnMe were talking installing on a macbook pro 3,1 (2007) I think i have settled on 10.04 for now. Im liking it. On my desktop, Im waiting for mint 13 but not sure how much il use it because its a gaming/ audio recording pc. Btw great vids man and il be watching the ones in the future

  • Would you recommend this over windows xp on a netbook

  • @Shayne2555

that would depend what you need/use your computer for.... so unless you give me an indepth explanation... I cannot recommend mint

  • Is it me or is the menu always a little buggy and a little slow when viewing which applications to use and question I got a Acer aspire one netbook d255-2331 Linux beginner what Linux operating system is best for my netbook?

  • @pschamp723

the menu was fine prior to mint 12... Netbook eh? i use to say ubuntu or mint.... but now i'm not so sure lol. bodhi linux would fly on it but it takes a little learning how to use e17. MacPuP is another zippy distro good for netbooks... or linux mint with lxde are some suggestions

  • prefer gnome2

  • @oxtaiLS0uP

    so do I

  • Hi linux4unme I found a way to use Linux Mints fetures with out the mint install witch was WAY to glitchy for me i will do a video on it soon and post it as a video response

  • @willlisawsom

    sure thing

  • sorry for nitpicking, but please practice pronouncing nouveau. nu-vo.

  • Kubuntu 11.10 now has the smallest footprint on your hard drive or soft drive.

  • Linux is going downhill :(

  • @filippo333

Linux is just the kernel don't forget ;) More like Ubuntu, Gnome and Mint have gone down hill.... but there are plenty more options out there and these other projects will improve ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe The main thing is...we dont need more distros, we need high quality open source softwares, if each one of those developers, who lost hours to customize a distro ...writed software ... the opensource comunity would be larger and more redspect.

  • Was running lisa for the last couple of weeks, from the RC through the release (clean installation once the 'stable' release arrived).

Honestly, I do not feel that it is deserving of its 'stable' label as yet.

I have no beef with the multiple menus etc, and was a pleasant environment in which to work. Unfortunately it was just a little bit too glitchy at this point. Only small issues that Im sure will be clobbered in time - but that time is not yet.

PinguyOS is doing the job for me atm. Nice

  • @CalinDee

agreed. Yer Pinguy has nailed Gnome 3

  • I love Linux , and always will . However I wish it wasn't so buggy, and had more high-end software / games. I just got a new computer , and haven't installed Linux on it yet.

  • i hated the bottom panel so i got rid of it

  • @66THELAW

    i tried both

  • I get graphical glitches on GNOME Shell in Ubuntu and it's based distros..

  • I get strangely similar problems even with fglrx drivers installed. At times gnome will restart on its own, or the alt-tab dialog will get stuck and I'm unable to change focus to a new window, or I'm simply unable to focus or click on anything, some tittlebars disappear, and weird stuff like that.

  • i think ill just make mine a full gnome 3 environment

  • I see the dislikes are back now OSGUI and his fake accounts are active again ;)

  • @BelaFleckFan

    yep.

  • @Linux4UnMe Wait....you got one guy that has many accounts that he uses to down vote your videos? Wow, 2 year old much? I would create many accounts to upvote you but unlike him I have a life. lol.

  • @BelaFleckFan OSGUI is an idiot

  • @BelaFleckFan ooh thats why there are so many dislikes. didnt got it first

  • ill stick to KDE for now..

  • @TheHugeTuber

which problem? i have demonstrated a few issues.... the Mint gnome-shell extensions are definately buggy.... some other issues may be with nouveau which is default for nvidia users.... experience with mint 12 may vary between nvidia/ati users... but for the most part the Majority of people i speak to have quite a few of my issues with mint 12. Where as stock gnome 3.2 is much more stable.... eg on arch etc

  • Installed the final release, had no problems so far...dunno

  • @IronAmethyst

let me know in a week or so of extensive use ;)

  • Hi there Linux4unme, wud u still recommend going for mint 12, or shud i w8 for it to mature, and until then stay with mint 11?

  • @12345ms

lol hell no, i wouldn't go for LM12. Maybe something Like PcLinuxOs would be good for you since it is stable and well tested . Otherwise MInt 11 is good

  • i will say i do get one bug. when i select the extension panel the graphics shit themselves on some of the options, otherwise no problem

  • the final release aint buggy on mine, it was buggy on the pre-final release :) just don't use the drivers Linux suggests, download the newer drivers from AMD if you are using ATI that is.

Mint's only real issues are the menu/software manager look boring, if they could add a software manager more like an App Store such as Ubuntu has then it would be alot better imo.

  • I agree, disappointing... I went back to Ubuntu Unity, Ubuntu is running better for me.

  • Maybe linux mint 12 has a buggy shell. I do not have any of this bugs in my gnome shell arch box. So stop complaining about gnome shell. Blame Mint.

  • @PelonDancer

I did mention i didn't have so many problems on archlinux with gnome-shell. It is the buggy extensions mostly causing the problem... but the app preview bug on workspaces is present even on arch

  • @Linux4UnMe weird. I'll video respond showing my desktop. No bugs in desktop preview. I've got nvidia drivers running.

  • I installed Linux Mint 12 and mine works absolutely fine only time i get trouble is when i plug in my monitor i do get a few bugs here and there but other than that no trouble at all. Good review hope Linux Mint 12 works out for you in future :)

  • I am running gnome 3.2 and Shell on arch and it is fantastic. I've really come to enjoy and appreciate Gnome-Shell and am looking forward to what its developement in the future.

I honestly cannot stand an abundance of redundancy in a desktop, and that is what linux mint looks like to me :-(

The way I see it, I am fully functional in Gnome-Shell, as well as gnome-classic, putting the two together does not translate to being double functional ;-) rather, just very messy, cluttered, and unelegant.

  • @brittyazel I totally agree with you. Gnome 3.2 shell arch box here :)

  • Thank god (Clem) for MATE. I am sticking with Mint 10 till MATE is fully ready. But then again, I do wonder what the advantage will be in upgrading.....

  • I have installed it and found several bugs already, double of icon applications, workspaces switching also, and for some reason sometimes desktop freezes... but it is looking good though.

  • OK good job

  • Do you have a twitter? Also have you tried or can you review Fuduntu? Heard it knocks PCLinuxOS out place for the newb-friendly/"just works" distribution.

  • @JonathanIsrael708

    nar don't have twitter

I think i've tried it before... a long time ago.... arghh i hate that friggin name "Fuduntu"

might have a look at it again soon

  • A shutdown option you say! why would anyone want to shutdown their computer? :D

  • @joe4ska

dunno... ask the gnome devs :)

  • @joe4ska Green planet; electricity costs, thunderstorm lighning, EMF-noise nearby (arc-welding, etc), holidays, building maintenance, ...

  • Mate is pronounced "Mah-Tay" like the tea ;)

  • @Neruson1981

ohwell... they shouldn't spell it like g'dayyyyyy MATE! :)

  • One of my machines runs lm-11 and it's just great, this video is very useful otherwise i would of switched to 12 already. i agree with all you said and thank you for this review i will hold back until Lm switches to kde or xfce. or what would be better is if mate takes off. when gnome 3 came out and i installed it i thought it was lacking. it;s still lacking. :P

  • @jesus2012end

yeah mint 11 was great "apart from a few bugs that came after :O )

    thanx

  • yes gnome shell in Mint is much more buggy than on my Fedora 16

  • My advice. Stick with KDE!!. Gnome 3 has a long way to go, and this proves it.

  • @bkovacs7

    e17 ftw :P :P :P

  • @bkovacs7 lol the linux mint rendition of Gnome 3 is hardly representational of Gnome 3 as a whole. I have used it on Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch and have found it to be stable and pleasant....this rendition is a little strange for my tastes. If I hadn't been using the working "how-it-is-meant-to-be" version of Gnome-Shell it would put a bad taste in my mouth as well, but I swear that the lm12 gnome 3 is accurate to stock gnome 3

  • @brittyazel

    you mean "isn't" ?

  • @Linux4UnMe yes, I meant "isn't" in my last sentence. <---what happens when you write comments at 2 am ;-)

  • So you have the option of a buggy gnome 3 desktop that is very unusable or a buggy copy of gnome 2 desktop. Sometimes I think it pays to stick to the stable releases like debian.

  • @ljscott1990

    lol pretty much for now

  • I prefer KDE and Xfce desktop environment at this time over GNOME 3 and Unity.

  • @boggs2005

    i'm using E17 ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe Yup! E17 for me as well. It's great and I love it especially with bodhi

  • Kaddy, any idea how long Mint 11 will be officially supported for? and I take it "Mate" is remaining GTK2 based? thanks

  • @22ness0hayden

    until October 2012 man

  • I just can't use Gnome 3, and Mint 12 implementation of it makes no difference. Although it is visually pleasing at first, the many restrictions on customization render it unpractical. For the moment Mint 11 with Gnome 2.xx is a much better choice for me.

Keep up the good work, I always enjoy your videos.

  • @shobogatz Neither and I have used it extensively. It just doesn't make sense how it's layed out and how you have to constantly go from one side of the screen to the other. Mint 11 with Gnome 2 is the end of the road for me as far as Gnome based distros go. KDE however lives on.

  • I dont know about Mint, but my ARCH installation with Gnome3 works flawlessly. I havent installed any extensions though.

  • Thought i would add a bug On my pc (nivda on board) it automaticly goes to gnome shell regular and wont let you do anything in the os itself and is probly going to go to good old ubuntu 11:10

  • Kaddy where's new intro? sorry busy these days man :-(. couldn't make my thing.

  • @TheLolipro

    hi mate

Only recieved 1 video intro so far... and 1 more is coming... recieved a few other bits n bobs though like my new Banner which is AWESOMEEE. I may have to make my own video intro If I don't recieve one I like as much as my current one.... :D

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Kaddy, man this sucks. I don't have words to express how much this just SUCKS. Ubuntu 10.10 was the last great Ubuntu distro. Now Linux Mint 11 is the last great one for them. I DO NOT like Gnome 3.x or Unity. Only time will tell.

  • @mschmaUT

indeed it does... And I expected Mint to not release until it was stable enough... but looks like they have disappointed for the first time.... If i was Clem i'de take the iso's off the mirrors and hold off until it get's more bug fixes... This release is atrocious and may destroy Mint's credibility

  • @mschmaUT Tried many new releases in the Ubuntu family. Settled on Xubuntu, with Cairo docks.

  • I havent tried it yet but I will be instaling it using wubi because I need all the hard drive space I can get but no matter what happens I will not thumb down this video because it is your experiance on YOUR harddware, not in a vm running a windows pc like someone we both know THANKS FOR YOUR GREAT REVIEW!!!

  • @willlisawsom

    haha. thanx mate :)

  • One of my biggest gripes with MGSE is Gnome 3 seems slower with all those extensions, or less smooth. Gnome Shell, plain, has always seemed pretty peppy to me, but not so with MGSE. My guess is all the extra javascript stuff going on but I wouldn't really know.

Anyway, nice review. Looking forward to MATE improving.

  • @ElderSnake90

MATE was awesome until it went bazerk with 100% cpu usage haha

    thanx :)

  • Every effort is an improvement over your prior effort. Keep up the good work.

  • @Gatorman32656

    cheers Gatorman

  • Using Ubuntu 11.10 with GNOME Shell and Nouveau on my desktop, and no problems here (other than a bug with windows eventually showing up on the wrong workspaces in Activities, but that was fixed a few weeks back).

Mint needs to get its act together, IMHO; they bit off more than they could chew with this release. Besides the bugs, Adwaita and parts of the Shell look out of place too themewise, which I wouldn't expect from Mint. Hopefully they can release a more finished desktop with Mint 13.

  • @WarriorIng64

It does seem like a rushed release and will be a major blow for their reputation after so many great previous releases... Agree about the themeing. I think Mint are on the right track... But I would of held back this release If I was Clem... Mint 13 in 6 months time will ensure a more stable mature release I think but in the meantime... Many People are going to be disgruntled with Mint after Testing this latest release....

  • Review CrunchBang 10 #!

  • Ugh... Why can't they just get rid of the top panel... Too much screen estate being taken up by having two panels. So pointless.

  • Gnome 3 does look super buggy still.... Looks like I'll be hitting the MATE version of Mint!

  • I told you, HURRY UP BITCH!

  • hi, great review (as usual). I must say I'm a bit disappointed too, expected less bugs. anyway mint12 are not the only ones added extensions by default, I saw a video review of the latest Pinguy OS 11.10 and IMO they did a much better job mixing gnome 3 and the old method.

BTW: would really appreciate a review of pinguy cause U always find the juicy interesting stuff

  • @DoDebian

ah, I forgot about Pinguy... and havn't tried their Gnome 3 remix... I'm not a big fan of Distros based on distros based on distros... i've always made an exception with Mint hehehe. But yeah, you're right... I will have to take a look at the latest Pinguy to see what they cooked up

    cheers

  • If you want a better MATE Desktop experience (yes there is another distro with MATE) then try out ZevenOS-Neptune MATE Edition which is unofficial but works pretty fine so far. zevenos[dot]com/neptune (scroll to the bottom to find the MATE version)

  • i just downloaded it now i dont think i will install ubuntu xfce is good enouth i guess

  • @joshuahardy95 I had the RC installed. That was enough for me. Xubuntu 11.10 is exactly what I want and need.

  • great review. i love MATE. now for ccsm and the cube.

  • I've used the last RC of LinuxMint12 on a low end AMD system I recently built for my work to raffle off for charity, and I've not had those problems even with the Nvidia drivers installed, have had a few times it locked up, and had to reboot, and all was good, but will be installing full LinuxMint12 in the next few days on that machine when I have time, and will update my experience then.

  • @bcbudful shut the fuck up. KDE is still the best. And if you don't like the default, you can customize it to your like

Kde WAR mal mein traum. Das naechste mal Pappnase antworte freundlicher oder ich zieh dir mal deine hammelbeine lang ;) Greeting from Calgary, AB, Canada

  • Nice and honest review. Good ideas but still too buggy. Looks like a beta release. Hope they can fix it fast! ;-)

  • Nice review. I like your new logo btw.

Wait, when did you become a partner?

About the new MInt, Pinguy and all these new releases, They are all a prime example why having a scheduled release date totally suck. I mean, are there any gnome shell distros out there now you can actually use? Why the hurry?

I know fedora is stable enough, but as I see it that's not a distro for everyday use.

I don't mean to complain of course, but it's sad that none of the new ubuntu based distros work properly.

  • @blackoutworm

8 month release cycle is a good idea. Like suse

  • I just want my old Gnome back. It was more customizable, the user had more options to change things. Gnome and KDE turn to much into apple/windows restrictions. Gnome 2 was for myself the best. I really don't like the way Gnome is going. It is getting way to hard to get it custom. Gnome 2 was much better not so cluttered with things that are not easy changeable . THAT bugs me the most. Take the power from the user is big MS and Apple BS!! Good bye Gnome and KDE YOU SUCK!!

  • @bcbudful I agree. :P

  • @bcbudful I agree, that's why I fluxbox

  • Is MGSE going to cross-distro like mintMenu was?

  • @JonathanIsrael708

    likely

  • @JonathanIsrael708 It's available for Arch, so I'm guessing it will come to other distros too.

  • I'm downloading 12 now dude! I'm more then likely going to disable ALL of mints extensions and just have pure gnome 3.2 so I might do a screen cast and leave it as a video response.

  • @BobsAwesomeCannel

    cool. No problems mate

  • Watched that in 1080 full screen, vid quality was excellent and voice sync was only out a fraction towards the end.

Gotta say mate looks like the future of gnome3, I'd certainly not recommend gnome-shell to anyone.

I think a few minor bugs on mate is to be expected as the distro was only released a few hours ago. Wait a month and give the devs a chance to put right the minor teething issues.

I can see why Linux Mint is the worlds most popular Linux Distrobution. Thumbs up on a balanced review.

  • @BelaFleckFan

I prefer my custom spin called Bogan Linux :P

  • Unless you want to be able to mix up your DE, I don't really see an advantage of installing this over Mint 11. Seems like they're trying to recreate Mint 11 using a worse version of gnome. I know they've basically had no choice but I believe Mate will be the way to go with Mint 13 and beyond. Plus, having an additional bar taking up screen space is a pain. Good review man.

  • you make many excuses to speak bad about LINUX MINT 12

  • @Mrcontrol725

    rightio

  • You could probably try to ditch ffmpeg in favor of libav, the ffmpeg fork. Ffmpeg was the cause of crashes in Kdenlive for me due to lacking AAC support (and probably having other incompatibilities), so I installed libav and those problems are now gone (only Pulseaudio and SDL problems stay). They obviously have crippled it lately. Using Archlinux.

By the way, Archlinux only provides libav through AUR, don't know about Linux Mint.

  • @Reloaded211

u got a few tricks i'll try for the next vid ;)

  • I had exactly the same issues with LinMint 12.. Esspecialy with the ATI propriatary drivers which completely break the OS

  • @SahLehron

arghhhh. So i'm not just unlucky then. lol

  • I think it is definitely a good start. By Mint 13 there will be vast improvements.

  • @Nekryu

    indeed

  • I haven't tried it myself, but looks like they should have polished just one desktop experience.

  • I remember from my brief time using it that the clock applet thing pops up in Linux Mint 11 too!

  • (remember to use the amd 64 bit version, if you use Phenom II X4 or more cores)

  • Mate DE FTW !

I'm so glad gnome2 was forked and that Mint has adopted it so early in the development. Buggy or not I still choose the mate desktop over gnome3/shell/unity crap.

  • @scorici

    haha don't blame ya

  • So far I don't like Gnome 3. I stay to Gnome 2.3. I upgraded from 9 Isadora to Linux Mint 10 Julia 64bit. Gnome 3 had some problems, as I tested it on Fedora 16 (had 2 crashes). But Gnome 2.3 is very stable and more than ok!

  • No problems for me, just you again...

  • @C4OShea

not even with MGSE? oh c'monn? be honest... :P

  • I've never had the workspace bug con Arch, must be a Mint problem.

  • I haven't had any bugs with Mint so far. I did a little with Fedora 15 but much of that was fixed with 16.

  • gnome 3 always buggy that why ubuntu 11.10 has problem in unity

  • @2111thekiller i think it more base of os then gnome 3

  • I had those problems on Arch on the release of gnome 3.0 but now it's very stable, I use it every day and haven't had those bugs since gnome 3.2

  • @xangelux

yer i don't remember having this many problems on arch with gnome 3.2x

  • Yea sure, I can see why people run screaming away from unity to this...geez

  • Personally my favorite release of 2011 :)

  • FIRST

  • Good Job! :D

  • @evolution1g

    cheers
