Well done for such a short movie. Though too bad Andrew Davies cut out so much of Jane Austen's satire. In the novel, Mrs. Allen and Isabella have the best lines.
Best first, awkward, perfect kiss EVER! xD What every first kiss should be...they didn't know what to do with their hands. Haha. I wonder if THAT was scripted.
I was going to say that I like it that General Tilney will be left with no one but then I started to think what that would mean and I'd really not wish that on anyone. Imagine having no one to love you at all. You could have zillions but what good would that do you? Without having anyone to care for you, you have nothing. I don't want to forget that and I want to tell those that love me why I love them and how much it means. The book has a different ending. JA couldn't leave him alone either.
i fucking love this movie!!!!!! i get a sick nervous excited feeling in my stomach every time he confesses his love and proposes to catherine. like everyone else, MR TILNEY, WHERE ARE YOU!!
thank you for posting the whole thing. I just read Northanger Abbey for the first time and it was so nice to see the video. Jane Austin really did some amazing writing. Sorry she never got her credit in her time.
is it just me or is it that it's rly cute to see mr tilney sitting there, holding the small glass with both hands and just drinking...and drinking.. or for that matter, gulping. amplifies his awkwardness.
I agree that, of all Jane Austen's heroes, Mr Knightley and Mr Tilney are the paragon of true gentlemen. It was probably intentional since their lovers, Emma and Catherine, were much younger. But, I like Tilney better because he is funny, charming, knows his own heart and pursues his love, a man with integrity and intelligence but does not come across as a prig, I believe that "he" was a rarity even in Austen's era (she never married, did she) and she made him a clergyman!? Interesting.
Everytime he says at 2:00, "Before I go on, I should tell you, there's a pretty..." I think he's about to say, "there's a pretty girl that I'm already engaged to," lol, I dunno why.
I love these movies/stories SO much... but I hate them for giving me very high expectations for any man!!!! Jane Austen, WHY did you do this to us?!?!?!
@silentxinsanityy awe! I feel the same way! Every time I finish a Jane Austen story, I feel all giddy and hopeful, but then I get brought back to reality within 10 minutes and proceed to become horribly bitter when I realize that men in real life are not really like Jane Austen novel.
Thanks to Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Persuasion, Emma and all those other wonderful stories I began to love English as the beautiful language it is! Hello from Austria
Mr.Tilney's quite different from other Jane Austen heroes! His temperament, I mean, since they're all truely good men. But only Mr.Tilney knows so well abt muslin! lol
the novel is a satire on early 19th century gothic literature, with the romance between tilney and catherine as a plot device. that said, they make a very cute couple, even cuter in the movie than in the book. this mr. tilney is much more charming than austen's original
@OldNoir - I think the movie let on that she was fifteen (either by intention, or miscommunication) but in the book she was seventeen at the time of the story.
@swhet it isn't a gothic satire... It is just a romance written by Jane Austen, they mention gothic satire because that is what Catherine was reading in her books.

I'm up to being exposed to something new. :) A romance, to me, is two people who fall in love during the course of life. People who love each other for their morals and whatever else they have in common. What do you define as a romance? :)
@Songsmirth You're looking at it through a modern lense, but back in Austin's day, Romance was referring to a writing style that was all about strong emotions, the picturesque & the dramatic, not necessarily about love btn a man & woman. Austin's books wouldn't even be called Romantic so much as Realistic. A gothic satire only means that she's mocking the gothic style and novels, which were usually about murders, seductions, scandals, etc; it doesn't have a bad connotation.
@BlankCanvas88 I will think on your thoughts. I'll have to read some diaries. I don't believe the women read them to improve their minds other than just reading approved material for women. Yes? I prefer those that have a historian author. It would be interesting to know how they were classified in the book stores of the time. IF they classified them in a certain order. I'm glad you've defined gothic for me. It makes sense but I've neglected it because of what you said. The bad connotations.
What a senceable mother-in-law she's be. This man is coming into a family, how beit poor in money, who will love him. His father is an idiot. He can have tons of money and be the most lonley man in the world. Life is teaching him a lesson. And he has a couple of children that have morals he'll never understand. :) When she says she'll marry him, Mr. Tilney's look when she says she'll marry him is delightful. So truely happy. They actually look like their shaking. Excellent actors.
LOVE the ending. Its was so perfect! I loved when hes like theres a chance of disinheritance and shes just like whatever, get to what you were saying! XD
And the kiss...has to be the best kiss scene from any of the Jane Austen turned movies! It was passionate and as said before me, awkward at best. XD They indeed had no idea what to do but couldnt keep their hands off each other. <33
This scene is so awkward but so cute at the same time. I just wish that they had elongated and elaborated a little more on the ending. It was lacking, I think. They always leave out what was the best parts of the books!
@GHfan300, I think she would've been but because Catherine said she loved him, she decided to forgive him and show what nice families do when friends are at their house lol
That kiss is the perfect combination of awkward and adorable! You can tell they don't know what to do but they can't wait to get their hands on each other.
@kavtoM well it ends the same way but without the child :D at least at the end of the book she's not pregnant yet... and elanor get married with a gentleman :D
@kavtoM - um, pretty much that way. Minus the 'being able to see the Allens' house through the window'. In the book, too, Mr. Tilney and Catherine were reconciled sooner. After Mr. Tilney had gotten angry with Catherine, and she had seen what a goose she had been, it says something like 'she came to dinner teary-eyed, and seeing that she needed it, he was particularly kind'. I like that rather more, but one cannot complain. The book is the book, and so much of the humor is in the narrative!
man i love jane austin books and the movies. I don´t know if i´m the only 13 year old that like these books. idon´t know why but there is something about the books and the movies that really chates(spell?) me.
@alyandaj55 - Indeed. One's understanding of the books grows with time, but still your taste is laudable if you are reading and valuing these books at your age :) I find them a perfect harmony of thoroughly believable characters, good humor, plus (the rare thing) a great judgment of character and what is truly good and becoming in a person. I not only enjoy J. Austen's works, but I admire and respect her for what she holds as worthy in them.
It's a cute story. Not one of Jane Austen's best works but good nonetheless. I like the actors who played the main characters. The movie does give the audience the impression that the general did disinherit Henry which didn't happen in the book. Since Catherine wasn't totally destitute and had a dowry of 3000 pounds, he ended up approving the wedding.
Man, where are all the Mr. Tinlney's of the world??? I'd love to meet one and fall in love ^^ Awesome movie! Absolutly love it <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Hahaha!!! I am in line :P In fact, I'm next in line :D!!! Hope you don't mind waiting awhile ;D I dont plan on giving him up any time soon XD!!! Hahahaha!!
@CanUreadMyMind1 I married 2. I'm widowed and married another equally as amazing, I feel like the most luckiest woman in the world!!! I wish you could experience this kind of joy! I once thought the same as you, where are they?! And I now feel a little as if I'm hoarding them all!
@CanUreadMyMind1 You know, if women don't expect men to be decent, they won't be. We are the ones who hold the standards for men as corny as that sounds. If we have standards then they will. If we give into their lusts then they will be more lustful and expect it from us. Men don't want to marry tramps. They will use them but deep down, they want the mother of their children to be decent women. Look around and you'll see that it's true. They respect us if we respect ourselves.
@CanUreadMyMind1 What are the "<3's? /There are lots of Mr. Tilney's in the world. You just have to look in the right places or expect decency out of men you know. Women of today need to require decent conduct from men and then the men will expect it from themselves. It has to be more comfortable than all the garbage society pushes at them. I smile at men who open doors for me. I hope they will do it again for the next woman and will be rewarded with another smile. Make sense?
Northanger Abbey is my second favorite (after Persuasion) and I really love this adaptation. They really are the perfect Miss Morland and Mr.Tilney :) Thanks for putting this up - only way I can watch it at college.
Omg this Mr. Tilney is almost EXACTLY what I imagined him to look like and behave like (as far as physical mannerisms) when I read this book! Anyone else?
i LOVE this scene. one of my favourite scenes from any of the adaptations. has me grinning like an idiot every time i see it, theyre just so cute together!
I have tried to read this book three times in the past, but always found it too boring, even though I love the other Austen books. It says in the pre
I never managed to get through the book, I thought it too boring, but the film was really good. Ms Austen sold the book in 1803- but bought it back in 1816 as it was still unpublished. her brother then got it published in 1818 together with Persuation.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I've been watching it over writing my essay on the novel and just *squee*! I absolutely adore it. I love Mr Tilney so much! :) x
Thank you so much I can't wait to go home and get these on DVD. My 1970's and 80's BBC movie versions cast look a little stiff and ragged compared to these young folk...haha
Thank you so much for posting this- I have really enjoyed it. Is there any chance you might be able to post Persuasion or Mansfield Park? I am studying abroad for the year and am going to miss their American broadcast.

@CanUreadMyMind1
sigh....too many men and too little who are like Mr. Tilney...like a needle in a haystack.
mahi687 7 months ago 3
@CanUreadMyMind1 What are the "<3's? /There are lots of Mr. Tilney's in the world. You just have to look in the right places or expect decency out of men you know. Women of today need to require decent conduct from men and then the men will expect it from themselves. It has to be more comfortable than all the garbage society pushes at them. I smile at men who open doors for me. I hope they will do it again for the next woman and will be rewarded with another smile. Make sense?

@CanUreadMyMind1 aha. Yep. Where are all the Austen men, indeed?

Northanger Abbey is my second favorite (after Persuasion) and I really love this adaptation. They really are the perfect Miss Morland and Mr.Tilney :) Thanks for putting this up - only way I can watch it at college.

Thank you so much I can't wait to go home and get these on DVD. My 1970's and 80's BBC movie versions cast look a little stiff and ragged compared to these young folk...haha

But is it so short...? HaHa time flies....

I love this version's ending; it's more like a foray into the gothic genre, and as realistic as the book was, I was frustrated with the waiting.

Thank you so much for posting this- I have really enjoyed it. Is there any chance you might be able to post Persuasion or Mansfield Park? I am studying abroad for the year and am going to miss their American broadcast.
