All the fan needs is a few drops of good lubrication oil. 3-IN-ONE or sewing machine oil is perfect. Honestly, I have fixed so many noisy Vaio's (all different models) using this method and it works perfectly. The only other thing to say is to avoid degreasers such as WD40 which are not viscous enough for the job. Honestly, a few drops of oil on the spindle is all that is required.
I have a VGN-cs230J...trusted sony vaio and spent a hell a lot of money thinking it had the best hardware WRONG!! fan noise driving me nuts..even with the cooling pad with 3 fans the laptop still goes crazy!!!!
Faulty fan motor..KNOWN Sony defect. You must have Sony repair. WARNING: Back up files before repair. I got my VAIO back and Sony corrupted the op system, apps Word, Excel and printing. A system restore has to be done and apps reinstalled...total nightmare!!! I want my money back..Sony defers to warranty and Sony Centre retailer to guarantee. Only after 2nd repair can I get an exchange..after 3rd, a refund. DON'T BUY SONY..tell your friends and file a complaint to consumer protection agency!!!
I have a Sony VGN-CS215J in White. I have had it for around 5 months. No problems so far and then within the last month, the stupid A and S keys started losing paint. I figured I would just wait and get them replaced at Best Buy. Then last night I was on my computer and all of a sudden the fan sounded like it wanted to explode. It's been audible for a while now but I just ignored it since everything seemed fine. I plan on bringing it to BB while on break from school. Wish me luck.
I have Sony Vaio BZ11MN and the same problem with my laptop too. I just wonder this is a common problem with BZ model. Really annoying to say the least. I sent mind under warranty and it is fixed now. Now I'm thinking twice buying Sony Vaio laptop as they should let customers know regarding the common problem such as faulty fan and should be replace even the laptop out of warranty.
Just want to let all you guys know, the fan problem occured three times in less than a year time. The last time was in october and the people from Sony promised me that they have included a new developed fan in the laptop. New developed as in 'there are a lot of trouble with the damn fan, we have to make a better one'. So after all, I really hope it was the last time that I have to sent it back. But like the most people here, I'll think twice before I buy another Vaio ...
I have the same problem with VGN CS11S bought in UK Jan 09. I spoke with Sony Customer Service and they said this is a known defect. They will only collect it and replace the defective fan motor approx. 5-10 working days. Other repair centres cannot order the part. Do not try to fix it yourself and definitely don't buy Sony Vaio again! Expensive and it is obviously crap. How they knowingly/legally could continue to sell a defective product to begin with is shocking . So much for the brand image!
I also could not find any advice on this problem on the Sony website, so we all waste time searching on the internet, writing comments in blogs and wondering what really to do. Sony could have at least made all our lives a bit easier buy acknowledging the problem on their website and advising us what to do.
same thing here - mostly it occurs upon startup or under excess load to the processor, but just this evening (while it happened to be raining out) i heard a noise that i thought was rain falling on the windowsill behind the docking station - nope... it was a different sound coming from the fan (sorta' sounded like frying eggs in a pan). if i biff the panel directly above the fan, the noise stops for a couple minutes but then starts up again.
My Sony is a piece of shit. I have sent it back for repairs twice during the first 12 months.....now the warranty just expired and the fan is making loud noises AGAIN!!!!!!!!! Just like it did on the 2 previous occasions when it had other probLems such as screen switching off simply when I adjusted the angle of the screen....JUNK!!!!!!!!!!
I have the same problem and it is going back to Sony for the third time next week. There is a new modified fan just released to address the problem. I won't buy Sony Vaio again! :(
It behaves like a fan should behave. There's a low fan-noise, but not disturbing at all. However, I've taken my vaio on a working trip and at arrival the noise started up again. After a few hours it worked it out itself. But I took no risk and let Sony know that there's still a problem with it. If you're planning to buy one, I would recommend another Vaio! My friend have other versions, eg CS. And their's have no problems at all (the way it should be!). Grtz
sadly i've got a cs 11 s and it goes with exactly the same problem. Sent it to support and they fixed it.. now the problem shows up again.. god damn it :(
I went for the cheaerBZ11MN version. i sent it back twice and then cancelled the order cos of the noisy fan. not good from sony. Its stuff like this you never expect from sony.
well having said what i said the compnay then sent the BZ11XN model out to me. Better resolution, shiney screen...... and a very quiet fan. win some, lose some i guess. very happy with the laptop now.
The problem was a broken fan! The shop where I bought it, didn't want to accept it that the laptop has a problem. But I called to Sony to explain the problem and they came the next day to pick it up. After 2 days it returned without the hateful noises!

does you vaio vibrate like mad near the fan when it makes that noise too?
Compgenius999 2 years ago
If you still have warranty, I suggest you to phone Sony's aftersales service to replace the fan. I did that and they sent it back two days later.
