  • Considering this is a live recording from the beginning of the 1960s, it has held up remarkably well. Fantastic to see the original Shadows line-up with Jet Harris and Tony Meehan.

  • #1, August 1960

  • lool sesy girl with a nice personality kiss

  • hihi baby You not gonna be bored with me

  • mmh Im your ANYTHINGGIRL. i am new, ask me i give you what you want

  • Finns have loved Cliff ever since Living Doll in 1959; local teen idol Lasse Liemola covered some of his hits and sounded awful; Timo Jamsen was more convincing and far better as a singer, just listen his version of Flaming Star/ Kohtalon tähti, the Elvis Presley orginal.....

  • LEGEND

  • Cliff richards and the Shadows have been huge in Europe for years....they celibrated their 50th year together in 2009 and packed Wembley

  • He could've been big in the states. Wouldn't have stepped on any toes, he's different than anything going on here..

  • I remember when he was like that, but what happened ?

  • WOW! A 'missing link' bridge 'tween Beach and mersey! Always wondered what they sounded like.

  • was this 1959

  • @deadman8380 No 1960 !

  • @flammasherman

    1 year off not bad!!!

  • @deadman8380 Absolutely , a good effort !

  • @kevinastraw - So did everyone else recorded live in those days. Yer an eedjit!

  • Comment removed

  • This is shallow, meaningless, crap. It sounds like a boy scout group fooling about in a barn.

  • @kevinastraw This comment actually made me literally 'laugh out loud'....

  • Cliff and the Shads equals great music.

RIP Jet Harris and Tony too.

  • screeeeeeeeeeemmmm!! I love Cliff !!! this is a great song from the late 50s' .. thank you ...lyndloo..

  • I love these days But I wish we could have the BETTER DAYS bad again after 3.00 GAS and HIGH UNENPLOYMENT IN MICHIGAN AND PEOPLE LOST UNEMPLOMENT BENEFITS !!!HAHA THAT IS SO GREAT - but I can still liston to good MUSIC

  • those were the good days... man, I wish I had lived in that time :S

  • Is Hank Single cause he makes my Heart melt!! MEOW!!

Love you but Hank you are The cats meow !! WOW what a hunk Hank you are!!

    Sharon

  • You are so much better than Elvis now that i hear you!!! And you are still sexy!!

  • You are so much better than Elvis now that i hear you!!!

  • Ihana äijä!! mut täytyy sanoa, vuosi sit stadin konsertis oli paljon stydimmäs kondikses:D love Marvin, Bruce is sexy!!!

  • If you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS -( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!

  • hey radlett2 - my wife is from Shenley - she grew up in the Black Lion - now we live in Canada - small world - thanks for posting!

  • my friends mum had this track on record we were forever singing this with our hair brush how i miss those days

  • Great video, great perfomer!

    Thanks!

  • where is Cliff now he was a HUNK lets find him NOW

  • Great Cliff

  • This was Cliff (Harry Webb) when he was trying to be Elvis - before he realised he was better off just being Cliff Richard.

  • Cliff was known as "the British Elvis." Maybe it should have been Elvis known as the "American Cliff Richard."

  • the shadows are better off with out cliff he's a cock

  • @mazzijify you are a Jerk for saying that I LIKE this man Ok

  • quel adorable chanteur!

  • the shadows were better without the singer! and the singer was and will be jealous!

  • the shadows were better without the singer!

  • This song was 50 years ago no.10 in the world charts

  • @LittleSweety you are a skank

  • see my videos and chanel vedete i mei vidi

  • so much better live than the record

  • I saw them in London in 1965 at the Palladium.

  • Bellissimo ricordo, grazie

  • LIVE! Brilliant !!!! HANK the man

  • seems like all anybody does is rag on Cliff Richard. But he had 10X the vitality of the American junk that was put out at the time. I am the illegitmate child of Cliff Richard , Hank Marvin & Lesley Gore.........

  • Am I the only one who kept expecting Presley to come out of the wings, punch Cliff in the gut and start singing "Follow That Dream?"

  • Those where the days

  • Tyzos... thank you for what you said it's soooo very true... many thanks to RADLETT2 for posting this great clip :-)

  • totally agree with the opinion about their sound influencing The Beatles early guitar work - it would have been hard not to with 1.6 million copies sold and every Jukebox or Radio station in the UK belting that song out 6 times a day seven days a week. Same thought hit me years ago listening to it. The Beatles were still way better though but yes they owe a debt to Cliff and The Shadows without a doubt....

  • don't you jut love him? My teen idol since I was 12 and that was many years ago.

  • Best example: the Beatles

  • Cliff may have been a star in Europe and Asia, but he is the biggest example that if you don't make it in America you will never be that super- star anyone knows. I liked him as an Elvis type or wanna-be,but never made the jump.

  • Jet can't wait for the next gig. According to Guitarist magazine this month. Rock on Jet!!!

  • Its great to have all five originals in stage again. But Tony had gone forever and Jet harris was down with cancer

  • Back to another time & Walmer Estate birds!

  • memories of simpler times.

  • The Cliff vs Elvis always seems a bit irrelevant. Cliff is great in his own way, and The Shadows are the original guitar heroes. Billy Furt (also great in his own right) was more of an Elvis clone than Cliff.

  • Or should I have said 'Billy Fury' ..(!)

    Thanks for posting this video.

  • CUDOWNE!!!!

  • Grande! Fabulous!

  • Thank you for posting this clip. It reminds me why I fell in love with Cliff so many years ago. I love his Elvis impersonation. As he said if it hadn't been for Elvis, there may not have been a Cliff Richard.

How lucky are we that 50+ Years on, we can still enjoy Cliff "Live" in person!

Can't wait to see Cliff and the Shadows in Concert in Australia- Feb 2010! How many other entertainers can boast sellout concerts in the UK, Europe. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa!

  • Of course, we should also give credit to the Shadows sound which made Cliff's early recordings unique. - those oldies like Living Doll, Please dont tease, the Young ones...

  • prefer the reissue of this on their Reunited album...............

  • cliff a gay icon

  • »QUEEN IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Can you be as popular as him?

  • no, no one can. Maybe hank?

  • cliff is always good .and good fun .the shadows are equally good ....why do people always have a go ..just judge the music........

  • @farr64

    its called jealousy

  • all was ok for cliff at this point,ok so he is in love with himself,i think he nobed the bass players bird,i think, not sure if it was the bass player,

  • He did indeed - he had Jet Harris's wife.

  • If you did not live in these days. Cut the Crap. He was better than Elvis. But all he had was a Little island. Not the whole USA. I suggest you hang onto your failings... Elvis is Dead! Jackson is Dead.. :Live a little...

  • have a word with yourself... how can u cliff is better than elvis... elvis had the world in his hands!... a true artist... no one will ever be like him.....

Cliff even said. without elvis there wouldnt be no him.. show some respect!...

  • lol...He was Britons answer to Elvis...Pretty poor answer I reckon...Still! A nice guy ; )

  • Wow!!!! what a useful comment, from a "grown up" too but then your countries best male musical export was Jason Donovan!!! . LMAO Prick

  • djspazzo1992... 1: Like every one else on this site I'm allowed to comment on any video I choose, be it positive or negative.

2: What I don't do is go around calling people pricks! 3: Jason Donovan the best Aussie male export??? Only in your eyes perhaps!!! LMAO at your own jokes?...hmmmm That's about as useful as tits on a Bull!

  • Cliff RIchards songs are still my fav...!!

A must to listen to THE SHADOWS version of `APACHE'...!

Just beautiful to see all of them together here...

  • Wonky teeth.

  • Can anyone tell me why Cliff wasn't on the radio here in the States? I had a radio glued to my ear in the 60's, and I never heard of him until You tube. He would have sold millions of records here, if we knew about him.

  • :)

    That's true.

  • he went to the states but was like 50 th on the bill or something silly like that ,you may need to do a google search to find out when it was. I think 1963??

  • wrong cliff and the shads topped the tour of stars 1960 and where ever they went the US and Canadian fans wanted more. Cliff and the shads were robbed of greater stardom during the late 50's and early 60's in the US. In Canada they had number 1 records during the early 60's. They pioneered the British Invasion in 1964

  • thanks for that hence the reason I put the question marks as I was not convinced I was right an now I know.

  • Have anyone thought that he might do a good vampire in a movie;) Great song^^

  • I have always respected Cliff and the Shads. Recently I found another English singer on You Tube who could sound a lot like him. Check out the song " Sister Love" it's the first tune on You Tube's " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part 2)", it's a fab song and Steve Laine is the lead vocalist only now with his group getting long overdue recognition.Go Listen!!!!

  • Nice tip Oddsman...I went to that site and really liked that other singer and the song. their other stuff sounds KOOL tool

  • Depeche Mode is the best british council in Germany. Beatles are very stupid and full of crazy stupid minds. Their music is and was stupid.

Martin Gore is the best British Songwriter. Lennon was a stupid long hair boy with drugs in his head.

  • I think no Depeche Mode and no 80's New Wave and 80's New Romantic.

I think 80's style, fashion, sound the link between god and the music. Without the 80's and Depeche Mode, no Beatles and Stones.

Dave Gahan is the godfather of Britians Pop World. hehe

  • No Cliff Richard and The Shadows, no Beatles.

No Elvis, no Cliff Richard and The Shadows.

I see Cliff and The Shads as THE link between Elvis and The Beatles.

It's really ashame that Cliff and his Shads don't get the credit they deserve.

They paved the way for the British Invasion, no one else.

  • @tyzos

  • @tyzos

I love this man and band Please lets Talk ok

  • @tyzos

Come ON! they got enough credit, for the great music they made till '63,after that ,they deservedly got left by the wayside. No congratulations for the MOR crap he made after his rock'n'roll years.

This lot got eaten & spat out by by the beat generation.

Don't get me wrong, I was a fan,and came back to him 25 years later, only for his rock'n'roll songs, mind. These tracks have a timeless quality, because they were brilliantly produced.CREDIT...?...they're doin' fine, thank you.

  • @tyzos I agree! before the big name rock n roll bands we all know and love there had to be small, daring groups who started it all and had to struggle to find an audience in society. Even John Lennon once claimed that "before Cliff and the Shadows, there had been nothing worth listening to in British music."

  • You gotta check out the lead vocalist on the song ' Sister Love" on You Tube's " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five( Part 2)" If that's not Cliff in disguise Ill be surprised. Check it Out!!!!!

  • he tried so hard to be ELVIS, but you can never be what your not!

  • cliff and the shadows, just great, good honest british rock n roll,i think cliff was better than elvis

  • i agree SIr Cliff is better than elvis! give me Sir Cliff any day of the week!

  • @redchampions123. perhaps you are a pussy but i am not a pussy at all, i am 61 years old and i am a still a tiger - toothless but yet a tiger. and later to day holland vs england becomes probably 4 vs 1.

  • it's supprising that such mad, self loving religious loony such as cliff can produce such great music for 50 years

  • It's a miracle to me. 12 years old in 1960 and I believed Cliff was a pussy. I liked Duane Eddy and The Springfields and Lonnie Donegan then. (and The Shadows apart from Cliff). But now I must admit: sir Cliff is an Icon.

  • i grew up thinking cliff was a pussy, i'm younger than you, i loved the pistols, clash, and various other groups like that, but i think what has happened, you and I are now pussys' and cliff has the last laugh. he is an icon

  • If your English, you have to hate cliff richard, it's tradition, but he's so nice, so innocent, you realy love him, he's part of growing up for me

  • Why do you have to hate him, if you are English. I know you are exaggerating, I'm not English, nor do i know anything about him, accept for his songs.

  • if your a child of the sex pistols, you won't like cliff richard, when i was a kid growing up in england, cliff was that sickly sweet middle of the road pop music, and was such a goody goody, he was one of those people you loved to hate, as was Max Bygraves, Des O'Connor, they were allways the but of many comedians jokes of the time. But no one really hated them, but no hard punk, sex pistol or clash fan will admit to tapping to there foot to "summer holiday" all in fun, he's a classy guy.

  • OK! Thanks

  • I am English and i think he is the greatest thing to have happend to music! And i know many people who are also English who agree!!

  • As an American, I think he was also very important to us as well.

Don't forget he was one of the best in the late 1950's and early 1960's for transferring the American rockabilly of the 1950's for an English audience which helped countless later 60's British artists get the inspiration to make it big in the states w/ updated sounds that Cliff & The Shadows tranferred. And then many American garage -- proto-punk & psychedelic bands would follow them.

  • Cliff Richard is more important for the history of rock on both sides of the pond than I think many give him credit for being.

  • I agree i dont think many bands would be here if they were not. Which is what you were saying earlier. I get sick when i find a book on rock icons etc. and i go striaght to the back to see if Cliff is included - and lo and behold he is not, but people like the beatles and others are(i think Cliff is a lot better singer than all of the beatles put together)

  • Man,you're ignorant. If Richard is so wonderful, why are The Beatles the greatest band of all time? Why nearly all achievements are made by them?Dig a bit more, and be so adult not to say bullshit like "I get sick when I see book of rock icons, and beatles are included but richard not".Make research. His students were better than their master.

What's more,Richard is shitty singer.Even Ringo, the weakest voice in The Beatles(if we can say about weak voice there) is better than cliff.

  • ignorant no! my opinion yes! i dont care what you say i am a Cliff fan and think he is the best thing to have happend to music in the last 50 years! and you are being ignorant saying richard when it actually is Sir Cliff Richard! on the bit about achivements well Cliff has had many achivements in his 51 years as a really successfull entertainer worldwide. also its not really about achivements any1 can get them - its about being a fantastic singer (which Cliff is) & also the quality of the music

  • by the way dont bother viewing Cliff videos if you can not say anything nice! and why are you watching them if you think Cliff is so rubbish!!!!?

  • While you may be right about The Beatles , and Cliff & The Shadows, you couldn't be more wrong about Elvis. Cliff admits to wanting to be like Elvis.

  • Hahahaha. CenaTv2, you are a great comedian!

  • But CenaTv2, I guess, It's no armor like igorance against logic. I don't go for Jazz at all, but I suspect very deeply that Charlie Parker was a 1000 times better musician than Cliff could ever dream of. There is SOME certain rules of quality that have to be fullfilled before we can talk about different taste. Hahaha...Cliff king of rockn'roll..ahh you should try stand-up comedy. Think you have a streak for it. lol

  • any way guys..just some in Glasgow..Friday...last....9000 bums on seats...

  • Comment removed

  • Powerpop from the year 1960

  • Go Sir Cliffy.!!!...He was very popular in Canada.. I remember when "The Young Ones"(movie) came to our local theater there were lines around the block to get in....He's a great entertainer!

  • Don't remember the young ones making a movie???

  • Might have been called Summer Holiday ! Sorry...

  • yes, The Young Ones was a song, and the the young ones was a brilliant tv show, check that out if you don't know it

  • No ,I knew it... it just escaped my mind... I love the song" The Young Ones"... thanks

  • The Young Ones was also a film starring Cliff.

  • Great singer and great song.

  • Grande Cliff Richard, I love your time with The Shadows! I would like to see them go to London in September

  • Great!! Youtube search for DISCO 45 MANUEL VARGAS, also VIVA EL ROCK AND ROLL MANUEL VARGAS and you will see an honoring to singers and songs of these years.

  • not true.

Hank wanted the same guitar as Ricky Nelson's guitar player, but they ordered a Strat.

  • hi

    TYZOS.

you are right . JAMES BURTON was using a telecaster.

the SHADS oredered the best guitar. a STRATOCASTER. and the rest is history..

just a truly awesome group. the best instrumenrtal group by miles

  • the real ..live.. sound thanks.

  • Yes he did do "Devil woman" and some equally commercial tracks. On this he's doing an Elvis (pouting) copy. Great. The shadows (Hank Marvin et al) had just moved to Fenders - previous was Burns Baldwin (Please advise!) but still had Vox AC 15s and AC 30s. Classic single copied by every 60s Brit Heart throb.

  • They first played Fenders and switched to Burns (later Baldwin) somewhere in 1963/64 and back again to Fender around 1971

  • didn't buddy holly play a fender too?

  • hank marvin choose a Fender Stratocaster to look like Buddy Holly

  • ok, interesting. thanks.

  • the first stratocaster of Hank MArvin was buy by Cliff Richard in USA. It's the first one imported in england. You can find the story narrated by Bruce Welch of the shadows on you tube

  • thanks.

  • yes

  • Is that the "devil woman" Cliff Richard??

  • Indeed, many years ago and this year 50 years in business!

  • I gotta hand to the brits. If they hadn't come over, we'd all be singing covers of Neil Sedaka and Franki Valli songs. Oh My! Thank you United Kingdom.

  • Sixties guy. The Brit invasion of the US was really strange. All the groups that we sent over had been influenced by American artists that had been largely ignored in the states up until then.

  • He was a teen age Idol, takes you down memory lane.

  • this reminds me of my Dad :)

    great song,

    love you <3 xxx

  • I like this early Cliff Richards recording. This is the original UK Cliffabilly sound, comparable to the Rockabilly sound in the U.S.

  • This is both timeless and evocative. Thanks for posting.

  • I love Cliff Forever!! lOVE THIS

  • Cliff and the REAL Shadows, Hank, Bruce, Jet & Tony. Yep, Bruce is playing his Jazzmaster in this clip.

  • What is Bruce playing? it looks like a Jazzmaster

  • Cliff was always so much better than Presley anyway..

  • are you frikkin joking?

  • I jest not! As with all music, the Brits simply outperform Americans, America has nothing much to evolve from I guess...while the Byrds were 'pop'ing along, the Stones were out there 'rockin' along..

  • I like this song & performance ok. It sounds much like any band from the late 50's & 60's from the Pacific Northwest. I think this may not be the clip to argue Cliff's greatness. He has better stuff out there.

  • this footage is priceless.

justhow brilliant were this group. one word

    AWESOME

  • Agreed!

  • Cliff may not be the King but he is certainly good enough to be the Prince.

  • cool!!!

  • Cliff Richard and The Shadows were very popular in Chile. Youtube search ELVIS ROCK DISCO 45 and you'll find an honoring to many beautiful songs of these years.

  • I'll tease if i want to, is all i can think of saying.

  • That was a bloody awful live performance. One of his best songs, performed like a pub singer

  • You're kidding, right? Much better than the recorded version. Maybe you brits need some soul lessons as much as you need a good dentist.

  • And maybe you gullable Americans should get off the sofa, develope some healthy diets and lose weight before you come out with stupid immature stereotypes.

  • haha damn americans

  • No, really maybe he doesn't sing so bad in this but.. he does look kind of drunk? Maybe it jsut the camera..

But look at 0:33 and so on.. doesn't he look like a vampire? ;p Haha and from afar he looks like a young Johnny Depp^^ Hahaha

  • there was no need for that.

  • WOW now that is awesomely great

  • Ahoy, and SAY WHAT? J

  • Dig that Elvis impersonation

  • just got webcam again!
