Franzen's "How to be Alone" was good, but "Corrections" is top-heavy on sex and scatology. I used to be a fan of Updike's until (like his first wife) I felt I was choking on public hair. If "Freedom" is anything like "Corrections," I think I'll pass and wait until "Back to Blood" comes out. Tom Wolfe is still the champ when it comes to American society.
@dyad2r1 While Wolfe is well past his prime I agree with you about Franzen. 'Freedom' is an extremley uneven novel [ which did, however, distract me well enough on a flight from Oregon to Maine] and I put down 'Corrections' in less than half an hour as the writing was so labored. Denis Johnson is our best of the younger American novelists and Roth remains the master.
@molloyxx1 - Thanks for your comment. I'm not familiar with Johnson or Roth so I'll check them out. I've been eager to read Tom Wolfe's "Back to Blood," but for some reason, the publication has been delayed.
@molloyxx1 - Oh, Philip Roth, of course. Yes, I once read "Portnoy's Complaint." I checked out Denis Johnson and plan to see which of his books our library has. Thanks again.

@HealthisWealthyes
I haven't yet read Freedom but I highly doubt that's the theme of the book.
