  • My name is valerie..awkward..o.O

  • I totally remember this! What an identity crisis this show had...

  • I never knew Valerie Harper had a third sitcom besides Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda, and I can't believe that Jason Bateman also starred on this show.

  • i thought it was called Hogan's Family!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this theme song!

  • Jason bateman has come a long way

  • This show is repeated every wekday from 2:30 p.m. until 2:59 p.m. on 7TWO

  • @trompfy The show comes on TV where you live? Would you be able to record it on your DVR and/or on a DVD.

  • I love jason bateman's laugh..... it is soooooooooo cute!!

  • The 1980's rules!!!!!!

  • Remember when Valerie walked off the show and it had to be renamed the Hogans? I was pretty pissed they had to change it up, has anyone made a modified version of this opening where she's digitally erased from her scenes?

  • @edkwon Valerie didn't walk off, she was booted because she kept arguing against the producers, who wanted to dumb the show down, change it from moral family stories to slapstick (more like Perfect Strangers).

  • @murphe777 I think back when the announcement hit the news, that's how they spun the story, thus that's all I remember, most likely what you said is correct, but you know what I meant.

  • I love the 80s I wish I had a time machine to take me back to the 80s only problem I wasn't born in the 80s I was born in the 90s life was good to the ecomedy was good America seem to care more about other people families seem to care more now thru the years it's getting worse because of hate cruel mean sellfish evil and wicked I feel people feel the pain everyday I wouldn't blame them I would to plus now these days people are ugly or assholes to one another and now these days most people are

  • So when did Valerie die?

  • @Szizzle When her actress quit the show

  • I love the themes for these shows! they had better shows in the 60's, 70's thru 80's!

  • Laces away from the kicker. Even got it right in this family tackle football game. Man the Hogans are hardcore.

  • this was the first season. A+++++

  • One of those rare times they killed off the title character.

  • Do you know how long I was looking for this original version......the original Valerie.

  • Are the directors that made this show make Family Matters ????

  • a true Epic show, it sounds like the persom who sang reading rainbow sang this.

  • When the Hogan family entered syndication, were these eps included as part of the package?

  • @Metlhd313 Yes, all the episodes were included, including Season 1-2 "Valerie" and Season 3 "Valerie's Family"

  • I like these old TV show themes. They dont have crap anymore! These were timeless.

  • Me too, I love these themes! They may sound cheesy and all but they were great, far better than now...

  • Agree with both of you!! Good ole' crap of the eighties!!

  • I forgot how good this tv theme song was. Definitely one of the better ones from 80's shows.

  • so this show was hogan family? cause they have the same opening song

  • They wrote off Valerie.

  • Yeah, I thought that was dumb when they killed off Valerie Harper's character just cause she missed one day of work, I mean come one that's stupid. but Valerie got NBC in the end by suing them for wrongful dismissal, she should've remained on the show cause I never cared for Sandy Duncan at all, even though her smile did bring a breath of fresh air to the show.

  • I like the part where Valerie picks Michael up at the airport and they hug in the parking lot!! So sweet!

  • I like the part where Valerie got buried after her car accident.

  • Geeze people. Would ya get your lazy asses over to "google" and figure out the facts? This woman isn't dead. Who the fuck came up with that idea? These comments about modern day celebrities or has been celebrites are bout as bad as readin a trashy ass tabloid mag. I just watched the dam video cause I remember this show, but geeze...its been forever ago.

  • The sweet insanity of Valerie Harper thinking she was such a big star that they wouldn't can her greedy ass. Now she has egg on her face for all the rest of the Days Of Our Lives where Josh lives on.

  • huh shes dead

  • Where is Valerie Harper today?

  • cancer

  • She has a site - valerieharper(dot)com

  • Who sings the intro?

  • valerie

  • Roberta Flack

  • Josh Taylor - too cute!

I used to enjoy watching this show, and not all just because of Josh. LOL!

  • Well now you can watch him on Days Of Our Lives. lol

  • I'm not a fan of DOOL, but I have a friend who loves it. I suppose I could her to record the scenes that feature him. Does he still look as good? I guess I could google his pic.

    Have a good one!

  • life is such a sweeeet insanity

  • I've always loved how Valerie caught the football at the start, it was original and fun, much like her!

  • I can neither confirm nor deny that Valerie Harper paid me to type my previous comment...

  • lmao

  • LMAO these comments kill me!!!

  • JUDITH KAHAN gets her credit during the airplane shot. Total ripoff to the one and only talent of Ms. Kahan, the oil can of the tv sitcom industry.

  • It was such a big deal back then when she was written out of the series. Ah, memories.

  • I used to watch these shows with my brother, the behaviour is so realistic and you can relate it to your daily life. But now all you get to see is, the uncultured, crappy so called "Reality Shows" which is horrible.

Also listen to language used back then it was pleasant compared to the horrible T.V shows today.

    Man I miss the '80s.

  • I miss em too. It's like having a bad case of ADHD trying to watch tv nowadays. Back in the day, even if you hated the show, you ALWAYS tuned in for the theme song.. Maybe if they brought it back, tv shows now wldn't hit the chopping block so soon; especially with all these lame shows getting axed before the 4th ep.

  • Lol at the "in stereo where available." Now everything's HD.

  • yes, that was actually a pretty big deal, I think NBC was the first network to actually record in stereo. If I'm not mistaken The Tonight Show might very first to broadcast in stereo. A Joan Rivers hosted episode if I'm not mistaken!

  • I think ABC was recording in Stereo around the same time. I don't think CBS did until 1988 or 1989

  • No, I think CBS was the first to do it in 1984. I read that somewhere on the Internet.

  • Also, LOL at anything that says "Wherever videos are sold" or "Wherever records are sold"

  • When I was a kid I used to think Jason Bateman was a jackass, judging by his roles on Silver Spoons and his show. Unfortunately I didn't know about the short-lived It's Your Move, where the seeds of his later brilliance where actually sowed. Sorry I ever doubted you, Jason.

  • They killed RHODA!

  • This has to be the only show of the 1980s where the STAR of the show gets fired.

  • Let's not forget Lisa Bonet on "A Different World."

  • lol

  • kick ass show!

  • The only tv show that I remember, where they changed the name of the show 3 times!

  • Didn't they write Valerie off her own show?

  • I think she asked for more money in her contract and boycotted until they gave into her demands or at least a comprimise. I think they did come up with a comprimise, but then suddenly decided they didn't like the way she'd been acting and gave her the boot, replacing her with Sandy Duncan. I remember being a little miffed about the replacement. Whatever.

  • Yes, they wrote her out as dying in a car crash.

  • aids i thought

  • Tv shows like this is fading. we need to take a stand before its to late. this is why our nation is in a downward move to the pits of hell. because crappy shows they show today only pomote sex volince, and other things like that. I grow in a time when things was simple. good moral what people stood for in tv shows. back then we didnt have to have tv ratings to tell you what shows oon tv was for kids are teens and stuff like that. because tv was pure then and now it is of the devil himseld. 80sya

  • Yes maiden I agree 80 shows was very good. 80s shows was probably the best decade of tv history. And yes maiden tv today is full of crappy reality tv and shows that aint worth my time. and the old shows from the past that made tv great is fading because tv stations are the next genaration would hate it. instead they show these useless tasteless realtiy crap tv shows. even yv land is turning its back on classic tv slowly but surly. its time for us people from the good age of tv to stand up.

  • All I have to say is to look at the credits as to who is writing/producing/directing shows of today vs. shows of yesterday. Pay attention to their particular ethnicity/religion/race and then you can go further than your little judgment call.

  • I loved how old shows used to have properly written and produced songs as their theme. Same with 80's cartoons! Now it's all crap...omg, I think I just sounded like my father.

  • Jason Bateman: Yum. ;) I remember being traumatised by this show, when they killed off Valerie. It was a kids' show, and they killed off one of the main characters. I always found Sandy Duncan irritating.

  • i agree!

i d never understand why they killed her

    i dont know why yet

    jason bateman ;) still yum

  • Sophia to a sock puppet:

"Tough break. One minute your about to entertain the masses, next minute your on a foot, covering a corn pad. Now you know how Valerie Harper feels"

I never understood that line till I read up on her!

  • I like how in the 80's shows, (at least) how in Growning Pains they didn't visually censor out the food brands they ate/drank. Nowadays you can't F%^&ing miss the product placement! It used to be a slight humble showing of the brnads...

  • I loved this show, the father was an airline pilot!!!

  • yes been a child of the 80s was good. a time of famliy and good moral. who can forget bout a good error in tv. but those times are fading away quickly. but think got for dvd releases for us 80s kids. i remember shows like perfect strangers full house, just the ten of us, and so on. kids today watch all these shows with volience and sex and everything else. its time for our tv stations to bring back family wholesome shows to our tv. screw reality tv. my life is reality.

  • It's great being a child of the 80's! Loved this show! =)

  • awesome !! I haven't even thought of this show in 20 years!!

  • Yup same here !

  • That theme song is SO incredibly beautiful! I get filled with every emotion at once every time I listen to that song: nostalgia, melancholy, and joy! And I swear, the scene that the father shows up at the airport in uniform and smiles & waves at Valerie, then she runs over to him and they hug as he lifts her up and twirls her around...I LOVE it, and it never fails that my throat tightens and my eyes water during that part! I dream of having a scene like that in my life, even if only once!

  • This was a good show. Valerie was written off the show cause she wanted more money and they hired Sandy Duncan

  • She also failed to show up at work too which was a breech of contract.

  • Nope, the reason Valerie Harper was fired is cause she missed just one day of work and she sued NBC's ass for wrongful dismissal, I think that they should've postoned production and aired a rerun, and resume filming when Valerie returned the next day. The show was never the same when Sandy Duncan joined the cast, without Valerie in the show is not watchable period.

  • Anyone but me notice all of Miller-Boyett shows are set in the midwest?

  • Yeah Along with John Hughes movies the midwest/ chicago area ruled 80's tv and movies

  • i would give anything to be able to see these old 80 shows like perfect strangers alf and so on back on tv. but all people now days care only for shows like american idol, surviver serieas and crap like that. wholesome tv shows need to be put back on tv. maybe that would help out or nation morels out big time. instead of all these trashy tv shows you see today.

  • man these are the days of family values you dont see no more. to many people care bout only money and greed. wholesome shows are no more face it.the songs from the 80s give you a since of respect for one another and trust. but now days its not family but money and going places.

  • roberta flack, is that you? :p

  • Present and accounted for.

  • Who hugs like that??

  • Oh, I don't know....PROBABLY EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO HASN'T SEEN A LOVED ONE IN A LONG TIME?

  • I...don't think I've ever seen anyone hug like that in real life. Ever.

  • I never realized that the theme stayed the same from "Valerie" to "The Hogan Family". The song is oddly appropriate once the mom is gone, I think.

  • I thought the song was better with Valerie..."there's a love that starts by letting go"...I always thought that part referred to letting go of the our little insecurities and sometimes our individual needs to make a family with a strong bond. Also, Jason Bateman is so cute!

  • Since I never saw "Valerie", but knew it of it, I assumed that they wrote the theme to address her death. So "a love that starts by letting go" to me meant that love doesn't end with death, but sometimes you have to move on to be a stronger person. I thought it was about rebuilding the family! I like your interpetation too.

  • that's what I figured you meant, I can see your point but just wanted to share a different view. :-) Thanks for replying!

  • I am so confused. I remember the Hogan family with Sandy Duncan. So what happened to Valerie?

  • Cliff's notes version...the show became popular after a year or so and Valerie Harper asked for a raise...they didn't give her what she asked for and she missed a day of work as retaliation...they then fired her and hired Sandy Duncan to replace her...Valerie Harper sued for wrongful termination and won over a million dollars.

They couldn't use Valerie's name anymore because she also sued them for using it the season after she was fired (it was called "Valerie's Family" that year).

  • The following year it became "The Hogan Family".

  • Thanks for the reply/info!

  • In fact, oddly enough even w/out Valerie, the show clocked Top 25 ratings in the Nielsens to boot.

  • Valerie, the character died in a plane crash, and Sandy Duncan came in as an Aunt.

First sitcom that killed off its leading lady!

  • Sorry it says on the internet,Valerie was killed off in a car crash not plane crash.

  • Does anybody know where I can download this song?

  • It was definitely all over the news back in 1987....I remember where both the show and Valerie Harper got news coverage as well. Right now, Valerie refuses to talk about this show or any experience she might have had back then.

  • the sitcom that killed off its leading lady!

The show got more coverage for axing its main star and Valerie winning the courtcase than anything else on this show!

  • what the hell ever happened to Danny Ponce and jeremy Litch? I had the biggest crush on both especially, Danny and had his pinups on my wall. that was over 20 years ago??? Damn

  • My friend was girlfriend to Ponce for a few years, about a decade ago. He was pursuing various work in the industry at that time. I understood that he and his family relationships were pretty volatile. His little brother is the red-headed boy from the John Ritter ''Problem Child'' movies of that era. As for Jeremy, I'm pretty sure Dan had said he'd become an accountant or something in finance. That was a while ago, so I'm a little fuzzy on that.

  • I have very sweet memories of this weird show. I kinda wish shows were made like this today. Yeah, they were corny but the 80's were a very frightning time to live in. Danny Ponce was so freaking cute and so was Jeremy Litch. So, the red headed kid was his brother? Was he adopted because that kid was white as a sheet? Danny Ponce was Latino like me.

  • I believe he's his half-brother, different father. Dan has one full-sister... and Dan was pretty good looking as a grown-up, too, though it was a long while ago when I last saw him.

  • well, he was extremely good looking then so I can only imagine that he is still a hell of a hottie. Well, I hope that he is happy today. He should be proud of his work because it provided great entertainment during a tough time for many. God bless him. Got any photos of him today?

  • It is Roberta Flack.

  • That sounds like Roberta Flack singing the theme.

  • Because it is Roberta Flack I learned this info from wikipedia and the theme is called Together Through the Years.

  • She has that distinguishable voice. Thanks.

  • Your welcome I'm glad I was able to help you out.

  • It is.

  • How red do you think Jason Bateman's face would get if he was reminded of this? God, I hope I get to see that! :)

  • He should not be that embarassed. He was considered the youngest director/producer/actor in The Hogan Family/Valerie clan. He also directed some Hogan Family episodes as well, too.

  • so it went from being named after the woman, to being named after the man lol :P

  • DAMN I miss the 80s

  • I never saw this series, didn't care about it at the time, and downloaded it only after rediscovering to my surprise (during a long hospitalization) that Valerie was actually as beautiful as Mary.

Doesn't this opening sequence, by itself, make one cry (by contrast) over Rhoda and Joe?

  • was this show set in chicago?

  • yes, this show was set in Oak Park, Illinois outside of Chicago. It was a great show!

  • The birthplace of MTM veterans Bob Newhart and Betty White (as well as the great, tragic Ernest "Papa" Hemingway).

  • this show along w/ two other Miller-Boyett sitcoms in Perfect Strangers and Family Matters all situated in Illinois.

  • wait a minute step by step was on CBS 4 the last season...i didnt kno that

  • the last season of the hogan family was on CBS rite?

  • Yes, last season was moved to CBS along with Step by Step!

  • Damn. So did Family Matters.

  • Yes and oddly Family Matters. But not all at the same time!

  • and Family Matters also moved to CBS in its final season.

  • How fun. Thank you for posting!! Hey cbsteffen...when Valerie Harper...ummm...left the series it became known as Valerie's Family...and THEN The Hogan Family.

  • This show was later known as "Hogan Family."
