But there are so many people that dispute that 'commercial success' should be a factor when deciding how great a metal band is- there are so many insane underground bands and all that don't do so well. I told you metallica are thrashh, black sabbath were just metal, metallica is next to slayer anthrax exodus testament megadeth, all thrash, then you have, black sabbath, deep purple, led zeppelin, all the early "heavy metal" even tho i think deep purple are prog rock and zeppelin are hard rock blues, but still they invented it, then exodus just creates a new sub genre of heavy metal which was thrash, then metallica just did what exodus were doing, so really, black sabbath perfected it

And you can't put metallica next to slayer testament exodus etc. because they are a million times bigger..100million plus albums more than the other thrash bands have sold put together..and also have a much bigger fan base! and also brought a whole new fan base to the world of metal. They ain't you're everyday metal band! They're the biggest and best.

I think you'll find Black Sabbath weren't anything when they started out.

They were a blues band called Polka ulk's Earth Band, changed to a dark sounding rock 'n' roll band after Geezer Butler watched the movie Black Sabbath and wanted people to be as shit scared of his music as they were of the movies.

They are one of the forefathers of heavy metal but with Ozzy, they're more doom than straight up metal.

The Dio and Tony Martin-eras were the most "metal" sounding.
