Basically, the only thing that is good about the macbook air is that it is 3.0lbs.

Everything else is lower spec than the macbook, and it costs more to book. Macbook is 5.0lbs IIRC. If you can deal with 2lbs more, the Macbook is clearly a better choice, and has your beloved optical drive.

But of course thats thinking of it as a full computer, but for people that just want something they can do some writing on, or something they can do some simple programming, internet, or music listening, its perfect. The specs are a little bit lower, but apple has done pretty good in making it not to bad, not having a disc player isn't that big a problem from what I have heard, and if you really aren't comfortable with that not having a disc drive, you can always get a small portable disc drive.
