Ha, interesting. I have narcolepsy and have been told to avoid turkey as it would exasperate my symptoms (mostly tiredness). I had never noticed turkey making me sleepier, so I was sceptical. Thanks for your video.
Were any of these people on sugar , there is no way you can study tritophant {if thats what its called} unless you test it on a human which does not consume toxic chemicals, this study has to be flawed as the "controled environment" therefore should not be published simply for view count.
This was a great, quality, informative production! Thoroughly enjoyed it, learned something and didn't mind the announcer at all. Look forward to more like these in the future from NewScientistVideo.
I don't think blood can be diverted from the brain, brain is one of the vital structure in the body and blood diversion won't happen to it. I may agree with Tryptophan is not the culprit for thanksgiving lethargy but the other assumption seems invalid too.
@spinspermy the brain does need a minimum amount of blood to function (750 ml IIRC), but usually you have more than that amount circulating around there. so "diverting blood from the brain" just means getting closer to that minimum amount, which does lower brain activity to an extent and could make you sleepy.
Blood supply diverted away from the brain to the stomach...
I wonder whether this explains any other phenomena in American statistics?
IF this causes brain shrinkage, then seems equivalent to people eating their own brain. jelly-fish in a sea of culturally protected fast food currents.
It kinda explains why the best zombie movies feature a 'mall'.. it's all those fast food brain eaters.
Intelligence/brain honing/trading; kinda makes sense considering how many calories are used by brains.
@marsCubed diverting blood from the brain doesn't cause brain shrinkage. that's like saying diverting blood from your muscles when you're sleeping causes muscle atrophy. your body always makes blood flow to the parts that are more active at the time, or stores it in veins if you aren't active. chances are your brain isn't active on Thanksgiving, so you won't need excess blood up there.
@HellsPlumber you misunderstood that definition by leaving out the second part, which is "... from the diet." there are non-essential amino acids as well. even though they are called non-essential, we still need them to live. they're called non-essential because we can synthesize them in our bodies and don't need to get them from consuming food. this is one of the few newscientist videos where they give good explanations for everything, so give them some credit
@NB5BHVL Sure ... my IQ level neither rise nor fall , that job goes to the U.S department of Education and how well they educate me and the experiences I gain through out life , but you have to agree that this does have the potential to increase my self esteem , because it's technically a victory !

@Cuddlebunzzzz Search wikipedia for Postprandial_somnolence, both the tryptophan and blood flow causes were cited as myths!

@spinspermy i had a feeling i was wrong, but it's been a few years since i've taken anatomy and physiology, so i wasn't sure
