  • @Jordan657945 o well thatx nice ha

  • Do turkeys themselves feel more tired than other birds?

  • whats with the hawaii music ?

  • After a good meal it's a good rest.

  • >"nothing says AMERICA quite like consuming huge portions of food."

    fixed that for ya.

  • boner??? 1:02 / 2:14

  • Awesome, I learned something new.

  • good to Know

  • "tryptophan" : the walk towards the airconditioning...:D

  • @kdgdirk lol

  • CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE EVERY VIDEO LIKE THIS. JUST LIKE THIS. WITH ACTUAL EXPLANATION AND MORE THAN A MINUTE LONG. PLEASE MAINTAIN THIS QUALITY.

Sorry for caps, but damn, I just couldn't take it anymore.

  • Anything that are high cholesterol will us sleep.

  • Ha, interesting. I have narcolepsy and have been told to avoid turkey as it would exasperate my symptoms (mostly tiredness). I had never noticed turkey making me sleepier, so I was sceptical. Thanks for your video.

  • I don't care about your science! In my tradition and years to come Turkey is the culprit!

Next you will tell us that Christmas lights don't actually twinkle... Ha!

  • late much? I guess better than never though. Gd vid.

  • Thank you. I've always wanted someone to confirm or debunk this myth.

  • I always thought it was my dad's noxious turkey farts that were making me tired.

  • IS IT JUST ME OR DID THE GUY AT 0:56 HAVE A BONER?

  • @l5o5g5a5n5 Lol!

  • Woah, this is a great video.

  • Eating meat causes real poverty, real hunger and real death significantly.

  • bullshit!!!

    I say WITCHCRAFT

  • Slow your Roll, with Grape Drank. Yeah, its an actual anti-energy soft drink with tryptophan in it.

  • 0:56 Anyone else noticed his huuuuuge bulge down there?.... Just sayin

  • Were any of these people on sugar , there is no way you can study tritophant {if thats what its called} unless you test it on a human which does not consume toxic chemicals, this study has to be flawed as the "controled environment" therefore should not be published simply for view count.

  • No, it's the roast potatoes.

  • It's been a while since I've seen a video that I honestly enjoyed watching on this channel. More like this!

  • Funny fact, L-Tryptophan is often used to effectively reduce the comedown effects of MDMA (XTC).

  • This was a great, quality, informative production! Thoroughly enjoyed it, learned something and didn't mind the announcer at all. Look forward to more like these in the future from NewScientistVideo.

But let's get current fellas. lol

  • carb crash

  • I don't think blood can be diverted from the brain, brain is one of the vital structure in the body and blood diversion won't happen to it. I may agree with Tryptophan is not the culprit for thanksgiving lethargy but the other assumption seems invalid too.

  • @spinspermy the brain does need a minimum amount of blood to function (750 ml IIRC), but usually you have more than that amount circulating around there. so "diverting blood from the brain" just means getting closer to that minimum amount, which does lower brain activity to an extent and could make you sleepy.

  • @Cuddlebunzzzz Search wikipedia for Postprandial_somnolence, both the tryptophan and blood flow causes were cited as myths!

  • @spinspermy i had a feeling i was wrong, but it's been a few years since i've taken anatomy and physiology, so i wasn't sure

  • @Cuddlebunzzzz I'm not sure either, I am searching pubmed right now. It seems there is no conclusive answer, just hypotheses!

  • So as sleep catches up to this thanksgiving, 11 months from now, put this myth to rest as well.

  • I always thought it was a combination of full stomach and alcohol. Never heard of tryptophan.

  • The video is late, the article is from November of last year.

  • Well, better late than never. ...I guess. o_O

  • Blood supply diverted away from the brain to the stomach...

I wonder whether this explains any other phenomena in American statistics?

IF this causes brain shrinkage, then seems equivalent to people eating their own brain. jelly-fish in a sea of culturally protected fast food currents.

It kinda explains why the best zombie movies feature a 'mall'.. it's all those fast food brain eaters.

Intelligence/brain honing/trading; kinda makes sense considering how many calories are used by brains.

  • @marsCubed diverting blood from the brain doesn't cause brain shrinkage. that's like saying diverting blood from your muscles when you're sleeping causes muscle atrophy. your body always makes blood flow to the parts that are more active at the time, or stores it in veins if you aren't active. chances are your brain isn't active on Thanksgiving, so you won't need excess blood up there.

  • i used to eat arrows... then i took a turkey to the knee..

  • @andrerc But arrows are so delicious....

  • "Essential because people have to get it"... Thankyou New Scientist, for that nice detailed description.

  • @HellsPlumber you misunderstood that definition by leaving out the second part, which is "... from the diet." there are non-essential amino acids as well. even though they are called non-essential, we still need them to live. they're called non-essential because we can synthesize them in our bodies and don't need to get them from consuming food. this is one of the few newscientist videos where they give good explanations for everything, so give them some credit

  • could be used to one day feed disaster victims

  • this vid would have more legs if it was done in season.

  • You eat a lot, your body gets tired.. PLAIN AND SIMPLE

  • I KNEW IT! I never eat the turkey, but I'm always so freakin' tired!!! It was the stuffing all along!! O_O

  • It's called food coma.

  • I knew that :)

  • happy thanksgiving! ..wait..

  • it's called tryptophan...

  • @WhatAxBrit So I've heard.

  • You don't say.

  • For once THANK YOU! newscientist, i've been telling people this for years and on every thanksgiving I have to re-explain it again.

  • one explanation is your body is sorting out whats in your stomach.

  • i saw this in my sub box expecting ponies

  • i am now hungry... thanks

    *gets up to eat*

  • some nice hawaiian music haha

  • everybody already knew this

  • a little late dont you think?

  • i never ate turkey.

  • fir...awww screw it

  • first

  • @TheHtjohn So what did you win ? ;)

  • @NB5BHVL My self esteem level rised over 9,000!

  • @TheHtjohn Guess this won't for an IQ level eh ? ;-)

  • @NB5BHVL Sure ... my IQ level neither rise nor fall , that job goes to the U.S department of Education and how well they educate me and the experiences I gain through out life , but you have to agree that this does have the potential to increase my self esteem , because it's technically a victory !
