I always thought that this song was a pun on the name of the charecter played by Amanda Barrie at the time in Coronation Street: Alma Balwin. In a similar fashion to the other single off this album: 'Roys Keen' which of course pays homage to 'Roy's rolls' the best and only cafe in Weatherfield. Of course I don't think this was a conscious decision by M but I'm sure as a known fan of Corrie and the Carry On's, who can forget Barrie as Cleo in Carry On Cleo, M deep down meant it this way.

The title is a play on words. The Latin term "alma mater" means something like mother who gives nourishment and it is used to refer to the university where one received a college education (lower-level bachelor one, I believe). For example, you've probably heard someone say, "That college is my alma mater." But Alma is also a female first name. So Morrissey has taken the popular phrase and changed it a bit to say that Alma (a person) matters, or has worth as a person.
