You are contending that because DDT has been banned from use, that millions have died from malaria. I would suggest many millions more would have died as the result of their exposure to DDT. We cannot arbitrarily spray chemicals into the world without understanding that some beneficial effect, may not be worth the permanent environmental impact. Carson proved that it be true of DDT. We should not use any product for it's short term effect, if the long term effect is bleak.

The relevance is that DDT usage has environmental, ecological, and health risks that are very detrimental. There are other ways with less risk and fewer drawbacks to combating malaria.

Now, if you or I were a small child living in Africa, what would you eat? Anything you could, really. Small game, grubbs, salamanders. If you're lucky some fruit. The reason I say this is to show that in Africa the human food chain is not separated from the animal one by a food processing industry. And that DDT would get into the human population, if it was used in Africa.
In my 10th grade biology class, we learned that as compounds travels around the food web, their concentration increases. Thus, the DDT put on the mosquitoes got into the frogs, then the foxes, and then the eagles. This was an example that was actually used.
The problem with using DDT (apart from all the negative health and environmental effects) is that due to DDT being used in large quantities in the past mosquitoes in many areas have become or are becoming resistant to DDT and so it useless in those areas. Something else to point out is that it doesn't matter if DDT is used in small amounts because it stays in the environment indefinately over time as it is used it just accumlates to larger and larger levels

DDT never killed off malaria in Europe. The reason we don't have malaria mosquitos in Europe (at least in the northern reagions) is because the climate is too cold up here for the malaria to survive

There are alternatives to DDT though, such as sleeping nets, which im pretty sure have proven quite effective. Dont even need to kill mosquitos for them to work.
But i also think certain species dont need to be kept alive if they aren't vital to the ecosystem. I just dont like that he seems to imply DDT is the only solution.

Im sure they get the majority of their bug bites when they are unconscious. If you have ever slept outdoors during the summer without a tent you wakeup with a million bug bites. During the day when you are moving around and slapping those suckers off you, you get bit alot less.

Even before i posted the last comment i think i should have qualified it. I could care less about the environment... when i was talking ecological impacts i was speaking in terms of whether or not it would affect species that were part of their food source. The relevance is that DDT usage has environmental, ecological, and health risks that are very detrimental. There are other ways with less risk and fewer drawbacks to combating malaria.
You are distracting from the argument of DDT by pointing out a statistic that appeals to a emotional stimuli. DDT while cheap as many drawbacks that are detrimental to not only other species but our own.

The reason I say this is to show that in Africa the human food chain is not separated from the animal one by a food processing industry. In my 10th grade biology class, we learned that as compounds travels around the food web, their concentration increases. Thus, the DDT put on the mosquitoes got into the frogs, then the foxes, and then the eagles. This was an example that was actually used.

The problem with using DDT (apart from all the negative health and environmental effects) is that due to DDT being used in large quantities in the past mosquitoes in many areas have become or are becoming resistant to DDT and so it useless in those areas. Something else to point out is that it doesn't matter if DDT is used in small amounts because it stays in the environment indefinately over time as it is used it just accumlates to larger and larger levels

I was more commenting on other videos, and his personality in general... i am far from an environmentalist.
There are alternatives to DDT though, such as sleeping nets, which im pretty sure have proven quite effective. Dont even need to kill mosquitos for them to work.
But i also think certain species dont need to be kept alive if they aren't vital to the ecosystem. I just dont like that he seems to imply DDT is the only solution.

Im sure they get the majority of their bug bites when they are unconscious. If you have ever slept outdoors during the summer without a tent you wakeup with a million bug bites. During the day when you are moving around and slapping those suckers off you, you get bit alot less.
Again i dont know enough about the subject... i was just saying there probably are alternatives. I also dont know the impacts of DDT. The ecosystem is a hell of a thing and the cheapest way isnt always the best way.

im not gonna debate you on this issue. I havent taken the time to look up the effectiveness of DDT or sleeping nets. I never claimed one was more effective than the other. I was just saying there are alternatives... that was my only argument... because the general idea of the video and commenter's was that DDT is the only method of combating malaria.
DDT may very well be the best solution. Assuming the environmental impacts dont seriously disrupt the ecosystem.

Even before i posted the last comment i think i should have qualified it. I could care less about the environment... when i was talking ecological impacts i was speaking in terms of whether or not it would affect species that were part of their food source. Killing bugs, might kill bats, which might kill something else, etc. (its the damn food chain)

Before believing you, I would check your background to see if you have any expertise in this are a of history, if you have a track record of being meticulous in checking your facts, if you are scrupulous about checking your sources, etc.

It is true that a a person with proven expertise in a given area is more likely to be correct than someone who isn't. But it is also true that a newcomer to a topic can sometimes see things with fresh eyes, whereas the authorities have bcome stuck in some kind of rut.
Bottom line - doubt is what gets you an education.
Thunderfoot definitely knows how to present a logical argument backed up with evidence. HTWW has just never impressed me in a positive way.
