They are shooting the video from a slighty leftside position from the position the missile was fired, so this is not a bird comming in from the right it is the missile that was fired near where the camera was. As the missle flies over the tank magnetic anomoly detectors read the shape and size of the object to determine if it is a tank and then fire downward penetrating the top of the turret. The missle doesnt fly on any kind of angle, its flying totally straight the entire time.

There was explosives in the tank when they shot it, but in a combat zone tanks are all loaded with hundreds of gallons of fuel and a shit-ton of ammo; so it really doesnt matter. The new age TOW missiles have fist-sized shaped charges that send the blast down onto the top of the turret (the most vulnerable part) and essentially uses the ammo in the tank to help with the kill. Javelins work the same way, basically a javelin uses hot gasses to penetrate and ignite the fuel and ammo to kill a tank.
Or its the fact that a real tank has hundreds of gallons of fuel, dozens of main gun rounds and thousands of coax and cupola machine gun rounds and they likely loaded this target to be realistic. Keyboard warriors all over the place in here.
A real tank that you're talking about is called a combat-ready one. The empty tank filled with explosives in this video is real too. About keyboard wars - I don't know all about tanks, but I know T-72B cause I used to be a gunner in one. And I can tell you - this video is crap, period. An immediate secondary detonation happens very rarely - and mostly when HEAT hits the side of the tank and reaches the carousel. All other cases - internal fire and detonation after a couple of minutes.
Also if I did testing I would care about keeping the tank in one piece, 'cause I would merely have one desire - to frigging see where my missile hit and what it pierced through in that tank. That's the way you do it - not the way when all that's left from a tank is a couple of nothing. But, of course, you know better.
Yeah, because its never a good idea to give a chassis a combat load and test the actual effects of the missile, you should always test them at a rusted out hulk that has been shot before for true accuracy.
Just tell me, how you will differ the effect of your missile warhead and the effect of secondary detonation? Just by stating the fact that "this damn thing just made this big badaboom" so our missile works? Or maybe you would like to know how the armor plates reacted to the blast from above? How much armor did the shaped charge actually go through? May be you would like to see and test -1) internal pressure change 2) internal area affected by secondary damaging factors?
Is it not a lot more likely that to fully test the missile's effect, they left a completely outfitted tank as a target. Or since we Americans apparently lie and suck so much, we have to make ourselves feel good by wiring a tank chassis to blow regardless of the missile's effect. Its actually pretty common testing, simply penetrating a tank's armor isn't enough, you sort of need to know what kind of spalling, overpressure, shock and incendiary effects result. Since the turret came off, must be ok

Good God there are a lot of stupid people who post messages here. The "bird" is the missile and yes it explodes over the target, firing a shaped charge into the weakest part of the tank (the top). This creates a relatively small hole but also creates a massive over-pressure condition inside the tank causing the turret to pop and igniting any ammo or fuel that the tank might have on board.
Most if not all charges explode above the target. Also with the highly powerful charges know, they create such a precaution that anything within 50-100 feet will be destroyed. Only mortars and cannons actually hit the intended target.

There was explosives in the tank when they shot it, but in a combat zone tanks are all loaded with hundreds of gallons of fuel and a shit-ton of ammo; so it really doesnt matter. The new age TOW missiles have fist-sized shaped charges that send the blast down onto the top of the turret (the most vulnerable part) and essentially uses the ammo in the tank to help with the kill. Javelins work the same way, basically a javelin uses hot gasses to penetrate and ignite the fuel and ammo to kill a tank.

A real tank that you're talking about is called a combat-ready one. The empty tank filled with explosives in this video is real too. About keyboard wars - I don't know all about tanks, but I know T-72B cause I used to be a gunner in one. And I can tell you - this video is crap, period. An immediate secondary detonation happens very rarely - and mostly when HEAT hits the side of the tank and reaches the carousel. All other cases - internal fire and detonation after a couple of minutes.

Also if I did testing I would care about keeping the tank in one piece, 'cause I would merely have one desire - to frigging see where my missile hit and what it pierced through in that tank. That's the way you do it - not the way when all that's left from a tank is a couple of nothing. But, of course, you know better.

Yeah, because its never a good idea to give a chassis a combat load and test the actual effects of the missile, you should always test them at a rusted out hulk that has been shot before for true accuracy.

Just tell me, how you will differ the effect of your missile warhead and the effect of secondary detonation? Just by stating the fact that "this damn thing just made this big badaboom" so our missile works? Or maybe you would like to know how the armor plates reacted to the blast from above? How much armor did the shaped charge actually go through? May be you would like to see and test -1) internal pressure change 2) internal area affected by secondary damaging factors?

Is it not a lot more likely that to fully test the missile's effect, they left a completely outfitted tank as a target. Or since we Americans apparently lie and suck so much, we have to make ourselves feel good by wiring a tank chassis to blow regardless of the missile's effect. Its actually pretty common testing, simply penetrating a tank's armor isn't enough, you sort of need to know what kind of spalling, overpressure, shock and incendiary effects result. Since the turret came off, must be ok

Good God there are a lot of stupid people who post messages here. The "bird" is the missile and yes it explodes over the target, firing a shaped charge into the weakest part of the tank (the top). This creates a relatively small hole but also creates a massive over-pressure condition inside the tank causing the turret to pop and igniting any ammo or fuel that the tank might have on board.

Most if not all charges explode above the target. Also with the highly powerful charges know, they create such a precaution that anything within 50-100 feet will be destroyed. Only mortars and cannons actually hit the intended target.

this is the TOW 2B missile...it is a fly over shoot down missile...im in the marines and an 0352...basically its my job to shoot this kind of missile lol
it does this because the russians made a tank (T-90) that has anti-missile system and with this missile flying over the tank, the system cant detect it, making the tank vunerable...and the tanks hull (the top of the turret) is some of the weakest armor on the tank...what you see in this video is called the lollipop effect

The device has a look-down sensor that detect the infrared heat signal of the tank and thus detonates above it. The top of a tank has the lightest armor and is most vulnerable to downward blasts. The secondary large explosion, the one that actually destroys the tank, is the tanks ammunition.

@Korablekrushenie Its call Top Down attack, the missile fires a shaped charge downwards onto the top of the tank, where the armor is thinnest. I suspect that the tank was loaded with explosives to simulate a "combat load" of ammunition. Please google Top attack, and the Bill Missile. There are some awesome videos that show Top attack Anti Tank Missiles.

i shot before 12 years tow-2 and i think this is tow-5 it has two more rockets and when its up the tank the rockets goes straight down ,tow rockets doing a hole in the armor and the gas of the explosion (thousand celsioum) gose in the tank and it blows becaouse of the rocket of the tank ,tow rockets can drill 65cm steal,averthink inside mealting..

It contains a shape charge that shoots downward. That's a TOW IIB, it's got 18 pounds of C4 inside. It's got a hard impact sensor to so if the gunner wants to fly in broadside he can.
