Here is a true and weird story - was on holiday Lindos, Rhodes in June '99 with a pal who was reading Bachelor Kisses by Nick Earls... I loaned him my Walkman Pro cassette as had made up compilations...and Bachelor Kisses was playing when he read the line from the book ' I was listening to Bachelor Kisses by the Go Betweens.....' = spooky...or what!?!
I think it is a crime that mtv never saw fit to show great bands like the gobetweens here in the usa. so many good bands never had a chance of breaking through over here because we were fed a steady diet of night ranger, quiet riot, reo speedwagon and styx. UGGH!
You obviously have taste! "the engines running at the gate" who thinks of writing that, what a great poet Grant was, we Brisbanites miss him so and I know many people around the world feel the same. R.I.P. Grant
Morrissey wrote something for NME around the time this came out and he reviewed a bunch of songs they gave him to listen to and hated all of them except for this.
@starkweather444 Thats funny because the first time i heard this song at amoeba records in LA and i thought it was something I never heard of Morrissey or The Smiths.
Hard to believe that Grant and Rob (Forster) never considered themselves good musiciians.. used to try and palm off licks to each other!! Fab chords and sounds here...
Excellent point on The Ocean Blue- quite a fabulous band. Emotion, melody, non-superficial lyrics are shared alike. The Go- Betweens require patience at times, but the payoff is well worth it. Both bands can contribute to cleaning up air quality- if anyone dares play them on the radio- not quite Radio Gaga.
Saw the band a few years ago at the Big Day Out, Melbourne. It was one of the most memorable gigs I have witnessed. So happy to see them perform live. A truly classy act! Best Australian band ever!
Never heard this song. It has a weird sense timing in the chorus, but I like it very much. I need to check these guys out. I don't know anything about except that it looks dated.
They do but they are rare - what about Augie March, they continue producing some exquisite music (albiet tamer of late). Sodastream also did some beautifal stuff until they recently broke up.
Es la primera vez que escucho a Go Betweens y es como siempre los hubiera escuchado, varios grupos pues han sido influenciados por su música. En primera me gusto un montón su trabajo, me transporta a épocas y lugares que jamás regresarán, muy emotivo.
My all time fav song ever. Miss you Grant, can't believe your gone and your songs are like gems - priceless. A guy whom was sent to boarding school as a young kid after loosing his dad, what a well of emotions you were. Brisbane, Australia & the world has lost a unique genious!
Thank you so much. I had the pleasure of seeing this band in a Wellington (NZ) pub in, I think, 86. I remember the woman drummer - a rare thing in those days - and a bass player who looked like he was just out of nappies. A wonderful song by a wonderful band. Thanks again.
Lindy is/was the drummer, she used to live behind me and practice the drums for a play/musical at the La Boite? theatre every day and I knew them as they were 3 memebers of different bands living in adjoining houses. After a gig in West End (again broken up by police)I was approached by a member of the GB and asked if I knew of a drummer. I said there was one but her talents were very limited, they really were, and they said they just after a drummer to do basic fill-in, not be noticed.
Such a beautiful song! So glad to finally see the vid. Thanks for uploading... and thanks, of course, to Grant, Lindy, and Robert for being one of the best bands ever right out of the box.
So this is what perfection sounds like...

@starkweather444 Morrissey was just acting the part of the young upstart trying to open up space for himself by cutting down established masters.

Presuming it's the same Ana Da Silva, the vocalizing is much sweeter in the background than it ever was on a Raincoats record.

If You wanna find good aussie indie like the GB's then buy "Write your Adventures Down-A Tribute to the Go-Betweens"
2 CDs of aussie artists performing GB songs, Bob Evans is great, Youth Group is good too.
