CA - Cerebellar Abiotrophy - affected arabian horse filly

The filly doesn't seem to see anything wrong with herself: she's just happy little horse. A horse isn't a broken animal just because you can't ride them. In fact, there is a disease in cats that does something like this; makes them fall, walk sideways, etc, and those cats live long healthy lives.

Yes, i understand a horse falling over and cat falling over are different- doesn't mean they can't be loving family members, though, just because they are a little tipsy.

@blackday44 If a cat falls off of something they may injure themselves and require surgery, but they won't kill the person they're standing next to. If a horse falls over not only can they injure THEMSELVES, they can also seriously injure or even kill their handler. The unpredicatbility and poor quality of life for a horse like this often leads to the owner's decision to humanely euthanize them.

@PaintedFaith At least they are loved, then, for their short lives. Just curious, are there different stages of the disease, where some horses have it worse then others?

Unfortunately the only test for CA is inaccurate at this point, as they only used one arabian sire (Pepton) and his progeny to develop the test. As of June 2011, 100% of Pepton progeny which have been tested are positive. Obviously, this is implausible, and only solidifies the needs for a proper test in order to stop this horrendous disease.

@CSWRB This is horrible,it breaks my heart,especially when there are people out there who KNOW their horses are carriers.Please let's be up front and honest,don't let this become SCID all over again.Is there somewhere to donate money to help develop a test?Bless you for doing this video,I'm sure it was the hardest thing you've ever done.

@PojkenMedTejpen no, to dangerouse but there are some horses they have the disease in such a mild form that you even don't know about if you don't test or you get an affected foal by chance. But they are very rare. It's still not known why there are so different manifestations of the disease.

no, there are also other races like fe the Oldenburger, but due to the small gene pool and the strong use of several bloodlines and stallions it became a bigger problem in arabians.

So sad. Poor little baby. I'm glad we have a test now. Course it means nothing if people cover up their horses' status. Arabians could be free of these disorders in a generation if everyone tested and did not breed carriers. I'm testing mine before I breed again.

They rest with my Saga in heaven. She had also Cerebellar abiotrophy. She was put down as 5 year old. I bought here in february and really fast i understand that something was wrong and we went to swedens best horseclinic ( ultuna) . And they tell us about here disease. She was put down in july..
