  • Silat is very similar to this along with Escrima.

  • Do the Bicycle Kick!

  • When I was in graduate school, I met a Korean guy who studied this style but he specialised in the short stick. This style very rare, you cannot find many authentic teachers in the United States.

  • @Haseeb2 Your comment about not being able to find authentic teachers in US is incorrect. The founder of the art Dr. Joo Bang Lee immigrated to the US in 1972 and Hwa Rang Do has taken firm root in the US with it's world HQ in Tustin, CA. Most all qualified instructors of HRD are now in the US. Unfortunately, since Dr. Lee relocated to the US, HRD is almost non-existent in Korea. One day we hope to replant HRD in it's motherland.

  • @WCHwaRangDo That is good to know, but I guess also bad that he didn't have many desciples in Korea.

  • @Haseeb2 He had many instructors but when he left he the person he placed in charge did not manage them properly and many of them went to other organizations. Please take a look at this video on youtube.

Hwa Rang Do: The Untold Story of the Formation of the Modern Korean Martial Arts - Part 1

  • good vid.

  • 0:21 waaaaaassssuuuuuuppppppp

  • Slashing someones arm like on 0:19 is enough to stop the fight immediatly .Killing is not needed.Unless you want to kill ofcourse...

  • I'm glad i could learn from the characters from Mortal Kombat

  • beautiful skill with knife

  • That was pretty cool man! Respect!

  • don't mess with him lol

  • Forget the knife watch out for the PONY TAIL! All kidding aside this guy is REALLY fast. Although, yeah, some of these moves are pretty advanced in complexity but that is what practice is for.

  • I would put my knife away and pull out my 38 special - that is what I would do!

  • Listen all of you computer heroes - knife experts. Hwarang Do's knife techs are the best of the best. It is designed for combat and tested in combat which a lot of other mc dojo knife tech's have not been. Read: Knife Self-Defense for Combat by Michael Echanis.

  • id shit myself if i were the guy practicing with him.

  • Wow, very fast and scary moves ~!!!

  • His motions are large and energetic out of necessity because he is showing a lot of strikes from medium or long range. I agree you wouldn't carve your thanksgiving turkey using such movements, because that is close range. He is demonstrating impact cuts - like a katana swing, not pressure cuts, so not expecting him to follow through would be absurd. He is very fit and in perfect balance the whole time, which always annoys youtube slobs. Spinning or turning is a legit move vs. 2nd or 3rd attacker

  • He's got a better idea than some but still way too wide with his arm swings which wastes energy and time and needs to forget all the backturning. ECOMOMY of motion is key!

  • @bladesaint21 Yes, you are absolutely right, spinning and giving your back is not the best option. But, remember that this is an Instructional Series and what you are seeing is only the highlights. You must understand it within context. The spinning and the wide strokes all serve purpose, The wide strokes first to gain proper angles and muscle memory, the same reasons for deep, broad movements in forms. If these can be done with great speed, then when one tightens up the movements (continued)

  • it will be that much more quick. The spinning movements are not for the beginner and also should not be primary even for the advanced. However, when one is skilled with great orientation, balance, speed, accuracy, agility & focus, when opportunity permits, a spinning cut, utilizing the centrifugal force is powerful. Furthermore, it all depends on the application: if all we wanted was practical then one one just practice stabbing, lunging, limited to very few movements. For example (continued)

  • the gangsters in Korea. They practice with sushi knives and primary practice lunging to two vital points on the human body, repeated over and over again in rapid procession. We are not just for practical reasons, but we are also a martial art, which strive to take difficult, challenging movements and with lifelong training, hopefully be able to make them work. These things are all mentioned in the instruction and in no way do we promote spinning as the first option for knife fighting.

  • @WCHwaRangDo I think you both made solid points. I would like to add wouldn't spinning in certain situations at the right time confuse the attacker? The spin at 0:45 done swiftly i could see stunning me just enough time for me to get cut lol

  • @bladesaint21

agreed..but one knick with a knife thats sharp...you'll feel it. it'll give the defender time to either run or attack again...

  • Dangerous dude!

  • a blade is just an xtension of our body

  • The techniques are surely useful, but I cant see the point for so much turning and exposing your back. Peace.

  • what is this art called?

  • Hwa Rang Do

  • wow...

especially the last couple seconds ...bad to the bone

  • he is moving perfect

  • That looks so violent. If I trained Aikido for 50 years, I'd probably still lose to that guy.

  • @Aprinsa whatever martial art you have been practicing, it is not about who will 'win' or 'lose' in every fight or battle, it all comes down to using your wits. peace.

  • Live blades and brave partners used!

  • wow-- just watching his moves terrifies me haha..is that a real nife? his face looks familiar in some action movies- did he do some movies?

  • aim for the neck

  • New proposed rules from the U S Customs will broaden the definitions of illegal knives to include all Knife's that can be opened with one hand which will in effect ban ALL pocket knives nationwide that can be opened with one hand

please go to AKTI before June 18, to help prevent this, the only contribution asked of you is your voice

  • O: that guy will beat any UFC fighter with that Knife!!!

The only way to beat him is to dodge his knife attack somehow but by the look of it, thats going to be very very hard.

  • This is a very good art and well thought out....just like the Hapkido, Tae Kwon Do, and Daito Ryu JuJitsu that it is based on....Can't beat putting Korean Kicks with Japanese Locks.....

  • this guy is NICE with a knife! reminds me a lot of shaolin double daggers form work, only using one dagger

  • I'd be the best friend emptying the clip into the other guy's friend with the gun, lol.

  • What would I do in a knife fight........RUN FROM THIS GUY AS FAST AS I CAN!!!!!!

  • Why are your movements so wide? For

instance, at the start of the video

the first move is what I would

    call a hay-maker.

  • You must understand that this is an instructional video and this is only snippets of the whole series. When one trains they start by doing big, large movements to help increase muscle memory of the movement. Then, when it's applied the smaller movements can also be done with much greater speed.

  • do you train with live knifes or was that only for the sake of the video, also i went to your website but is there a place to sign up for classes or extreme fighting styles only a dvd series? i know that theres a hwa rang do studio in the westcoast, and i live in la. thanks for any help.

  • Using the live blades were for demonstration purposes to show the precise control of the weapon by Chief Master Taejoon Lee. In practice we use dull blades, but once comfortable, live blades are also used in advanced levels. Much of the battle is overcoming the fear of the live blade, knowing that the blade is sharp changes everything.

  • What's the difference between the

hwarangdo you are teaching versus Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat

By Michael D. Echanis? Are the two hwarangdo

    styles from the same lineage?

  • Michael Echanis was trained by Hwa Rang Do Founder Dr. Joo Bang Lee and the book was done under Dr. Lee's supervision. It's all Hwa Rang Do. The tactics are the same. Just difference variations and app;ications.

  • Where should one go to get this training?

It appears that Hwa Rang Do is a traditional belt system, if thats the case at what point is the blade training DVD integrated into the standard curriculum? Or is this DVD independent of the standard course?

  • You ask all the right questions. We have 108 different weapons and in our core curriculum we integrate the traditional weapons. It would be impossible to cover all the weaponry in the color belts alone. The knife fighting tactics is especially devloped for military applications, as Sulsa Tactics.

  • awesome, amazing, mindblowing. im definately going to learn this :D

  • GIVE IT UP FOR KOREA!!!!!!!!! : D

  • i see you teaching a slice to the femoral artery. Way to go! most knife fighters only concern themselves with the upper body. almost no one things to guard their groin. a femoral cut will cause a guy to bled out in less than 30 secs. i am impressed again. you leave your students well prepared

  • very nice!! I would like to practice knife fighting ;)

  • dude i wouldnt fight that guy unless i have a rpg-7

  • he'd probably doge it anyway ;)

  • not if he's right infrount of you

  • Lol, Chief Master Lee would probably catch it and throw it back at you. :D

  • it needs more courage to kill someone with a knife, as it means 'eyes contact' before the action. good vdo. our knife club is teaching the same, or close, techniques. tks.

  • I don't care what anyone says, being attacked with a knife is a hell of a lot scarier than a gun, lol

  • very very true lol guns are effective but knifes are just lethal crazed weapons

  • Of course knives are a hell of a lot scarrier than guns! Why else would modern militaries be using Bayonets!?!?!?

  • hes very gooooood

  • He is my homie xD

  • Looks more offensive than defensive.

  • Of course it does. If you facing some1 with a knife u can't make a mistake or you're done. kill or you will die.

  • thats sick

    see this takes skills

any one can pull a trigger but it takes skills to know how to fight with a knife or a sword and any other MA weapon

    were can i take lessons??

  • thats is the song of the grand master of hwa rang do

  • son*

  • this guy looks a lot like a guy who usally plays the bad guy in martial arts movies.

dunno he's name. any one know if its him. think he plays in a movie called midnight man

  • No, Master Taejoon Lee has never played a villain in a movie.

  • i think i know who u mean... he played a part in Big Trouble Little China Town.. but this dude isnt him ^^

  • whats the song?

  • It's an original track produced for the Fighting Styles Series.

  • ery very impressive

  • I swear if i faced that guy and i have GUN or Rilfe i will not mess with him !!!!!!!!!

    damn he is FAST :P

  • Mais que fait la police?

  • remind me not to mess with this guy.....

  • Dose anyone know what track that is playing in the background sounds so cool. reply if you know hehehe thanks ^*^

  • that dude is fast

  • yo thats some serious jet lee shit, Ho! wa! ya!

  • Pretty intense set.

  • that kid is the next Jacky Chan or someshit man.

  • SÜPERRR

  • Overkill or excessive force, always a problem for the defender that doesn't understand the judicious use of physical force and deadly physical force. Learn the laws, too.

  • If there's knives involved, you're not there to dance.

  • Sissyboywad, I'd rather be alive and in jail than dead. Make sure they stay down.

  • Yes, it's better be in jail than a six feed under. Thats what my firend always says.

  • I mean he's not fucking around. Right, take them out. Don't waste time.

  • anybody with a knife who 'knows' how to use it, with the real intent to kill is extremely dangerous. however, seldom can we find him walking in the street - most of them are in jail. one fatal hit with a knife is enough to put a man in hospital or grave. my teacher in the philippines killed somebody (a two-time homecide ex-convict)using the attacker's own knife for self-defense, was still imprisoned 'coz he cut him 32 times! autopsy revealed 10 strikes were fatal.

  • allnamestook,

Then why bother watching this item? After all, you'd have to be paranoid to learn how to defend against a knife, right?

Hope living in your Utopia is going well for you.

  • No you wouldn't. There are stabbings and people being attacked with knives all he time.

  • a month ago a turk pulled a knife against me. i wish i'd have kown how to defend myself. luckily poliece came by! i don't know where you live, but if you have never been in a life/death situation you live i a utopia.

  • I live in dublin irelan and i was tretned with a knife, i broke the guys arm. i have traned in about 5 difrent combat stiles including watching this sires i recamend it "special forces self defense DVD training series"

  • I really would avoid defending yourself with a concealed weapon like a knife since your going to have a hard time explaining to the authoritizes why you where carrying an edged weapon in the first place. If you're town/city allows you to carry a firearm I suggest you do that instead.

  • You would only have a problem with that if the knife was over 3" and a fixed blade. 3" folders are legal to carry.

  • Not if you have a concealed carry weapons license in your state. Fl has one and i can carry any dagger of any length, kabar, bowie, ect. as well as a gun.

  • or you have EMS cert.

  • This entirely depends on where you live. That sounds like CA law to me. In the midwest, places like Kansas & Missouri, up to 4" folders are legal.

  • you get far less trouble from police carrying a knife than you do a firearm. i always carry a knife with me. its not only a self defense tool, but a tool of survival and the most useful tool on earth. i use a knife at least 100 times a day. besides, with a knife theres usually no innocent bistander to catch a bullet.

  • How would it be easier to explain carrying a gun vs an edged weapon?

  • shit he's looking to chop off limbs!! this guy is deadly..

  • anyone who likes knife stuff like this should watch "the hunted" with tommy lee jones. so good. :)

  • Well.. they have a plan and would implement that plan if needed.

  • im pretty sure if any1 saw this guy running at them they wud just shoot him down in his tracks. But amazing fighting if there was only knives in the battle

  • uh do you always carry a gun with you?

you're frickin paranoid or need to move to a better area

  • its like martial arts with knives!!!!

  • one of the oldest and most practical weapon on earth.. the simple knife.

  • well, i guess that if you like to kill the person who attacks you, then this guy shure as hell shows you how to do it -.- i mean, i can imagine it being hard to foresee a knife to the back when ur walking down a dark street, but this guy shows you how to kill him with the assumption that the other guy wants to kill you, which 90% might not be the case, doubt that ppl walk out at night thinking "well, now ima kill some1 with this knife!"

  • And that's how they do it-when your back is turned.

  • His targeting is pretty good, going for some of the usual vital areas. Only problem with this type of forms and speed-drilling is that you are assuming that you're at least 3 to 5 times faster than your opponent. That's a dangerous assumption, and these chains require an awfully compliant training partner/opponent. The best type of training involves a one-for-one attack/defense ratio.

  • Hmm, though it has some nice sides to it, I thought that he had some positionings that made him pretty vulnerable, but perhaps thats a part of the tactics. Anyways, it was a pretty nice vid.

  • good body positioning and attacks on the tool.

  • I can't do that shit

  • Nice display of knife fighting and tactics. Thanks for that.

  • great...thx for posting

  • Totally awsome!

  • how often is someone going to get into a knife fight....id rather just shoot the person

  • Dumbass

  • agreed

  • Guns aren't going to work when you're walking through a crowded area full of dangerous people. Or when you're on a street and you don't know when someone's going to shank you.

But if by "knife fight" you mean two people with knives going at it, then I guess it's not so common since one can kill the other before a fight even begins.

  • Knife attacks happen alot more, it just depends if you willingly walk around EVERYWHERE with your knife. At my knife defense place we learn to use anything we find, like sticks or something, then just slap them up alot. People eventually give up when they know they aren't going to win, and it hurts a hell of alot.

  • It depends, if you use 45 ACP rounds it takes one shot

to ground a person, they also teach close quarters

    tactics with handguns.

my opinion, I would end a fight with a gun, specifically a compact M1911A1.

  • A few years back, an old friend of mine was knife attacked outside a bar down the Jersey shore. This was after he apologized to the guy about talking to his girlfriend. He twisted the knife out of the guy's hand after being stabbed through his hand. He then cut the guys throat. It was all over within 15 seconds.

  • Oh And what happened to him?

  • awesome
