  • Look up 'The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained by CGP Grey' funny little vid but will quickly explain a lot to people.

  • People seem a bit confussed about the terms British Isles and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The UK term is a political/constitutional term. The British Isles is not poltical or constitutional term but a geographical one describing the 5000 odd islands(might be more or less I forget exact number) in this part of the world.Which includes the two biggest islands which are called Great Britain and Ireland, please note both of these are the island name not the countries name

  • @AyshireScot Are you a Geography Teacher?

  • @AyshireScot

British Isles is an insult to the Irish, and not recognised by the Irish government. That's all I'm saying, the facts. It's mainly used by the Brits ignorant this. If you watch TV like sky news during the weather they never say British Isles, because they know it causes offence to their Irish viewers.

  • @DartCiarrai Being offended seems to be an Irish past time. But what's truly ignorant is not Brits who use proper geographical terms but the mindless fools who followed bigoted properganda so much that everything contected with Britain/British is made out to be the route of all evil.History is there for us to learn from, stop actually living in the past and concentrate on more important things going on right here and now, like your extremely poor health service and your messed up economy.

  • @AyshireScot

If England was known as Little Germany it would upset you I'm sure. But if the Germans say it's ok I'm sure you'd accept it.

  • @DartCiarrai Nah it wouldn't bother me at all , why should it I'm neither English nor do I live there.Anyway little news flash ....... the war's over (not that Ireland got involved) Germany are now friends ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • @DasHearach Ireland disagrees.Educate yourself.

  • Comment removed

  • @DartCiarrai There is little lacking in either my education or experience. Incidentally - I have many good, educated and not so educated, Irish friends for whom I hold a lot of respect. It's only idiots (of any nationality) who annoy me so move over to my side and further the cause of common sense. You up to that?

  • @AyshireScot problem is, is your a unionist pig, at one time scots-gaelic was spoken all the way south as far as galloway, it WAS the language of scotland until the reformation. idiot

  • @joeblow238 Resorting to bigoted attacks doesn't change historical fact.No lauguage at anyone time was spoken completely by the whole nation. We have a rich cultural history with many influences from many other cultures. For example did you know the word 'lug' which we use for ear is acutally an old Norse language.Scottish Gaelic has a rich oral and written tradition and is an important part of our culture and heritage but it's not the only part.I'm extremely proud of our rich and vibrant history

  • @joeblow238 " it WAS the language of scotland until the reformation. idiot" Knox was criticised by some for speaking and writing English but the langauge that was being defended by some was Scots which had been the language of Court etc for a long time prior to the Reformation. Gaelic was one of the languages of Scotland and was for a time dominant but it wasn't the only language. Scotland has always been multi-lingual. One can't appreciate Scottish culture and history without recognising that

  • Delores is one of the few who can do Dougie's great song justice..

  • my favourite we song

  • The British Isles were so named by the Romans. Great Britain being mainland Scotland, England and Wales. Lesser Britain being Ireland. Caledonia has bugger all to do with Ireland being the area north of Antonine's Wall not occupied by the Romans - the Scottish Highlands. This song, however, has been beautifully performed by many Irish singers and this is an excellent example.

So quit the bloody bickering and just enjoy the song.

  • @DasHearach "Lesser Britain being Ireland."

That's racist in todays PC world.

God help you if you use the bloody Romans as your geography teacher.

  • @DartCiarrai "Greater" meaning larger and "Lesser" meaning smaller - referring to the square area of the two islands. Sometimes you just have to go through the bother of explaining such simplicities to people.

  • @DartCiarrai: Who in the hell are you to say that i'am pro brittish, Away and boil your head in a pail full of sulfuric acid you bit of afterbirth. I'am a man born in the wrong land but am a CELT and my heart is for IRELAND and it's people so fuck off.

  • @57MALIC You're an idiot.

  • @DartCiarrai: Who the hell let you loose you cannon ball! I'am talking about the CELTS who lived on the British isles thousands of years ago who didn't have any sort of bloody British or Irish governments at that time, They governed themselfs you twat! Just you stick with your 200 years of American so called history and leave the rest of the worlds history to us who know better. Thanks for dropping by and have a nice day you all........!!!

  • @57MALIC If there was no British government how is it the British anything? Oh and your profile is all IRA shite but you're pro British Isles means you haven't a clue what your talking about.

  • HI LADS THE WAR IS OVER

  • @josephonwhidbey: I'am talking about the celts from around the Brittish Isles and not further afield, And don't bother apologising. It's not your fault that your from America were 90% of your population dont even know were Europe is let alone the Brittish Isles........!!!

  • @57MALIC You're a relic youself "British Isles" haha get a grip. A term never recognised by an Irish Government. Fact. The correct term is Ireland and the UK or The UK and Ireland. Or even IONA "Islands of the North Atlantic" or how about "these Islands" or the "Western Isles" though thats not favoured cause there's Scottish Islands called that.

  • Ireland, Scotland, Wales, And the Isle of Man, Are all Celts. england are german saxons' The terrorists to all nations! Ffs...Look up the HISTORY.........!!!

  • @57MALIC You failed to mention the Danes and the Normans who were the Norweagens before moving into France. Every nation has an evil past of one kind or another. BTW, it was the Romans that drove the Celts further west into Ireland. Look up the History.

  • I've heard this song from Patricia Murray who lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia but has a Summer home in Prince Edward Island.

  • Britain is the Island i live on, Scotland is the country i live in. British by chance, Scottish by birth.

  • Comment removed

  • beautiful song :)))

  • what is british....United Kingdom of etc etc

  • @npl988 you asked what the UK is. 'Great' Britain is the colloection of England, Scotland and Wales. The UK includes Northern Ireland as well. The British Isles then also includes the whole island of Ireland though as a citizen of the Irish republic I object. Finally the commonwealth is any territory with the Monarch as its symbolic leader.

  • jonboy, ur british whether you like it or not. you don't have a scottish passport do you?

  • @crw45able nobody will ever covince me i'm British,if i consider myself British,i would already be dead

  • @crw45able a passport doesnt define ones history and culture, scotland will never have anything in common with that plague to the south of us. 1000 years or tyranny, rape, steal, murder, language, dress and culture oppression, highland clearances. death before i say im british, and ill never wave that blood apron you call a union jack. indepence will be won.Gàidhlig is back on the rise in ALL of scotland now and its great to see were arent forgetting our history even tho the english tried too

  • Scotland, Caledonia, And Alba....Call us what you want but, Never call us Brittish...!!!

  • No one sings this like Dolores Keane!!!! What a beautiful song... music doesn't compare to this nowadays

  • fckin savage so proud

  • DELORAS IS ONE OF OUR FINEST SINGERS . SHE IS JUST WONDERFULL

  • @affirm100 Great song, and, YES, Delores has the best voice for this one!

  • I love you Penelope.

  • I was walking the shores of Loch Etive in Argyle and stopped to speak to a local man. He told me that Dougie Mc Lean wrote Caledonia in a bothy just a few miles up the loch. When finished he sang it to two Irish hillwalkers who immediately felt the pangs of homesickness and left to go back to Ireland. Dont know if its true bit its a nice wee story. I'm the same when away from Scotland

  • @johnnytheglesgabhoy yes I know the feeling well...Gaelic word for that peculiar emotion it is 'cianalus'...no one word for this word in English...

  • @clarebannerman No that is not Jim Corr....not every man is Jim.....this is a total conspiracy.....just like 9/11, the Volcano in Iceland, the Indonesian tsumai. It's all in your head guys......we're all being probed!!!

    yours sincerely,

    Jim Corr.

    Am i Jim Corr??.....no way!!!......another conspiracy!!

each and every version unique and beautifull.

  • A wonderful song sung in the beautiful backdrop of County Galway.. I so hope to visit the place where my family came from.

  • what happened to dear delores?

  • Just a clarification in response to the description, this is not a love song. It's a song of nostalgia, homesickness and remembrance of one's origins. On a side note, Amy McDonald does a beautiful rendition of this song.

  • @AnBhfacaTuMoBristi

It's love of a place so isn't it, and love of the songwriter's country, home and origin.

  • id love to straighten her hair :)

  • I rather like it exactly the way we see it!!!

  • @ktmcp07 Why, for crying out loud? Millions of women would love to have that thick wavy hair. Me, I'd like to bury my face in it. Lost my heart to a Galway girl!

  • Comment removed

  • Never get sick of listening to this. It has meaning no matter what stage of life I'm in. Celtic music is nothing short of miraculous.

  • Check out Jim Corr on keyboards.

  • is he making up some new conspiracy theories??:D

  • Such IMAGERY in this song... "Sitting here before the fire, the empty room, the FOREST CHOIR..." Only someone close to the "faerie folk" could create such imagery, no? (And what a fine voice has the lass!) Thank you, Clare Bannerman...

  • Oh My, Oh My... What to say...Small world. No, that won't do. Can't find the words. I ache. Thank You.

  • Beautiful song

  • why do ppl get so offensive on the net?? eejits just relax and listen :)

  • Chill everyone .... and listen to the song.

  • the comment from sharanprasanth is not invalid...

or do you really think that they are all singing about your hometown in the U.S.? :D

  • is that jim corr from the corrs on keyboards?

  • caledonia is the name of the town i live in. united states. soo that comment from sharanprasanth is invalid.

  • Where is Caladonia ? Who originally sang it ?

  • Scotland. Caledonia was the given it by the ancient Romans.

  • i think its both ireland and scotland is called caladonia.its a place of the celtic tribes

  • Actually Ireland is Hibernia and Scotland is Caledonia, but still two countries closely related

  • @proudscott Hibernia? I thought it was Eirinn

  • @luna4ever36 erin is gaelic, hibernia was a name give to ireland by romans, is latin just like calendonia is latin for scotland and alba is gaelic for scotland

  • @gaelscot Isn't Erin Gaeilge ? Sadly for Scotland I think too many people focus on Scots Gaelic and not our most spoken, widespread language,Scots.Which is being deluted more and more as time passes.I think we can all remember times , especially at school when you were told off for speaking Scots. At least now it's a protected language under law but we still don't do enough to promote or protect our true national language.

  • @AyshireScot Gàidhlig was our NATIONAL language, not that anglo language you call scots-doric. its english pig latin filth. we were formed as a celtic nation and a gaelic speaking people. weve been denied of it for far too long. saying scots is our true language means you dont know a thing on scottish history. once pictish died out Gàidhlig was our language ALL OVER SCOTLAND, till it was outlawed by that plague of a country to the south.

  • @gaelscot Tut,Tut your ignorance and obvious bigorty does you no favours.Scotland all through it's history and even today is a multi cultural and multi language country. To label Scots as English pig latin filth shows a total lack of respect and knowledge of Scotland and the great diversity that has influenced it both in the past and in the present,as languages are forever growing, changing and developing.Scots Gaelic at no time in history has been spoken and adopted by the country as a whole !

  • @luna4ever36 'Hibernia' is the Latin term for Ireland. 'Éirinn' or 'Éire' is the Gaelic term.

  • @proudscott The Ancient name for Ireland was Scotia from the Scots tribe from Iberia who called it after Queen Scota, her grave is in the South west of Ireland... Brian boru was the High King of Ireland and Emperor of the Scots. The Scottish Clans from the western Isles and Galloway claim their Ancestery from the UI'Neil...O'Neal Dynasty of Ulster. MacBeth,MacDonald,MacSween,MacLean,MacDuff,Morrison,MacNeil, McNeal, to name but a few, that makes us Scots an Irish Tribe.

  • @ianmcvey1 and others! Yes, the Scots; from Ireland; colonised the Clyde Valley but bear in mind that many names in; particularly; the north-west of Ireland went there from the west of Scotland in more recent times. Caledonia, however, is geographic and refers specifically to the area of Great Britain that the Romans did not control. The region north of Antonine's Wall. The Scottish highlands. Maybe the midgies held them back! (Mmmm....maybe we should export a few midgies further south!)

  • @proudscott ancient caledonia in fact was everything north of Hadrians wall.
