  • Don't forget a nod to Mr Johnny Marr on the geetar too!

  • Matt Johnson genio

  • Genius song.

  • the drum kit sound delivers the right upper cut punch of f.u. and move on.

    brilliant and thanks

  • But as silent as the car lights

    That move across this room

As cold as our bodies silhouetted by the moon

And I would lie awake & wonder

    Is it just me

Or is this the way that love is supposed to be?

  • God ...this song is so sexy, gives me chills, as it did 30 years ago..WOW

  • This is poetry, great lyrics

  • fun fact: he is watching his own video for 'Gravitate To Me' around 2:50 -- anybody know if this was directed by Tim Pope like that one was?

  • Where are you Matt ?

    What you doing ?

    We miss you.

    We need you !

  • One of the best albums of all time!

  • You've moved further from my side, year by year,

While still making love dutifully sincere

But as silent as the car lights that move across this room

As cold as our bodies silhouetted by the moon

And I would lie awake and wonder

Is it just me or this the way love is supposed to be?

Best Lyrics ever...The The The Bomb

  • i just loved this song . it was so sensual.

  • Been there..

This is Sinead isnt it? I used to have the cassette of this "cassette"? what the hell is a cassette? you say? When I worked in the music industry everyone had to have one.....days of the dinosaurs, heh.

  • Oh how I miss the 80s music, love The The

  • I just LOVE The The!

  • video doesn't do the song justice...

  • one of the ultimate breakup songs

  • Why the 90's put all to shame

  • @gewddoogie ..you mean the 80s..

  • @therevepigee i stand corrected, even better

  • @gewddoogie ...my personal opinion is 1977-1989 = BEST era, 1964-1973= 2nd best era, 1990-1995 = 3rd best era, and 1946-1959 = 4th best era of ALL time...well, maybe those last two are tied for third place...:)

  • @therevepigee agreed... I've always said that music died in 1997.

  • @therevepigee Absolutely agree with this. There was the brief early 90's stretch of brilliant rock music... but everyone was listening to grunge and R&B.

  • Takes me back to my 10th grade/sophmore year in HS back in 1989 when this song was release.

  • ...talk about despair, angst and spent love. Johnson/O'Connor/Marr collectively put together a song that is depressingly dark but so unbelievably and lyrically BEAUTIFUL that even after so much time it still makes me weep...so glad you thought to post it on here.

  • bladerunner.

  • Sinead O'Connor, Johnny Marr and Matt Johnson sitting in a studio cooking up this hott shi*...thank you! Such a sexxxxxxy song!

  • The The's "Dusk" was one of the best albums of last century .

  • When Matt Johnson says "...in your liiife", it sounds a lot like Peter Murphy.

It's no comparison the crap being put out these days. A lot of the music of the 80s imparted mood so well. The quality of the music was better too. I also think the videos during the earlier years of MTV actually complemented the music so well. It's too bad MTV new focus has nothing to do with cool videos anymore, or even with good bands. The music is mostly weak these days. What the hell is going on?????

  • When matt Johnson says "...in your liiife", it sounds a lot like Peter Murphy

  • I can't stand watching people chew gum. It's something gay dudes and 15year old girls and 50 year old street walkers have in common.Great song though :O)

  • I am so glad to find The The Again even on Youtube...An ERA of Emotional Growth is gone, before ITUNES,cell phones and computers...We had more passion. Long Live the true underground HEROS of Yesteryear...

  • Simply brilliant! So glad to have some of this band's fine music in my collection.

  • Cool song!

  • What a wonderful song!

  • Agree great song and album! Matt Johnson writes great lyrics. So many good bands then, loved what was happening in the 80's era!

  • Of all the duets that Sinead has done this is by far the best and most haunting.. Their voices go together perfectly.... This is love gone horriably wrong...

  • Goosebumps.

  • everyone on these comments has a hard tale to tell.

  • I have been listening to the the for twenty odd tears and then my brother spoiled it all by saying he sounds like Rolf Harris.

  • I have been listening to the the for twenty odd tears and then my brother spoiled it all by saying he sounds like rolf harris.

  • is the blue girl sinead?

  • one of the the's finest

is this the way love is supposed to be?

  • one of the the's finest

  • truly a classic of modern rock. can anyone post a better, emotionally deeper song? ga ga ooh la la ? really? kill me now. the lyric, the melody is simply perfect.

  • truly a classic of modern rock. can anyone post a better, emotionally deeper song? ga ga ooh la la ? really? kill me now.

  • @rmherbert1957 check out Beyond love from the same album.

  • love this song. the video however is one of the dumbest, gayest pieces of shit i've ever seen. actually, most music videos are fuckin stupid

  • Wow....after 20+ years it still does it for me, some songs do that, sadly not many though

  • I only wish they could have gotten Sinead for the video....

  • This is like music noir. Smooth, haunting, brilliant!

  • Love it. have loved it for about 20 years.. Where has all the great music like this gone.. ? Missed Matt in Melbourne 1988 by 2 days.. Was so pissed off..

  • such a great song..

  • Can't think of any other band that creates such 'soul' music...

And Sinead O'Connor's voice is spine tingling in this song.

  • MATT JONHSON = GENIUS .... LEGEND,

HIS SONGS AND LYRICS ARE AMAZING,

  • Great musician, great writer, great singer, great band. Johnny Marr was the most talented member of The Smiths. The The was one for the music archives. Great freaking song.

  • Genius. :O)

  • awesome and classic

  • Hot damn. Makes me wish that all of my breakups could have been as zexy as this.

  • One of the best Albums of last century.

  • @bergving Thank you thank you thank you to whoever uploaded this video, have been trying to find it for ages....so so so good.

  • I love this song. i would think of an ex-boyfriend when I heard it. Sinead O'Connor's vocals are haunting in this song.

  • This track excels pure beauty, an under-rated song writer if ever there was one. I listen to this track time & time again.....timeless

  • great song, great album, great band

  • @CollectorOfMusic Correct!! sir!!!

  • @CollectorOfMusic great observation.

  • This tune is a classic simply because it draws upon a theme that humankind has experienced before time recorded.

  • What a beautiful song, Matt knows how to create beautiful melodies and awesome lyrics with meaning.

Even his new work is awesome, would love to see him release new stuff more often.

  • beautiful song

  • love it and these are my favourite band of all time..

  • get rid of the gum dude,,,

  • but Matt is so cool he can chew gum and sing, so why not?

  • Great arrangement. I think Matt Johnson's

career mirrored Tears for Fears in their CD trilogy, their 1989 releases being much more mature.

  • One of the best bands to come out of the 80s. hardly got to hear them except on public radio though. What a pitty

  • Wow, Sinead looks beautiful in this video. I just love their voices together.

  • I don´t know if you're trying to be ironic (I guess you aren't), but Sinead's not in the vid. Of course she sang this with Matt Jonson, but the one you can see on your screen is not her, I think. Cheers.

  • @WhatsNotToLove its not Sinead in the video. Its a stand in. I think she would not do the video. I agree about their voices.

  • thank you trent(nothing records) for this band

  • I'm sure the record label really burnt them, they must of thought aaahh fk it lol . . class band though . . .

  • @egsy I was in a band in the 90's with the son of the guy who signed The The, they always made the company (Epic, later Sony) tons of cash, unfortunately they had such huge advances (let's face it, tunes this good don' t come cheap) that they were always in debt to the company, tis the sad story of so many great talents.

  • @DrJamesFeelgood

Thats doesn't suprise me 1 little bit, Matts an absolute perfectionist and had big production on albums like this and infected, fuckin awesome talent

  • this is the song I had stuck in my head, when I landed in jail, for knocking out my true-love

  • Reminiscing about beating up your girlfriend on a music video comment section on YouTube.

    I came.

  • @FuckingStanz classic rebuttle.

  • Love love this....so sensual

  • Great song! thanks for taking me back when everything was so young and easygoing.

  • awesome awesome awesome. God why arent these guys on the radio more! Shit!

  • This song takes me back in time, listening to the song with great company....young,wild and FREE..definitely ahead of his time....

  • Not only does Matt have an incredible voice, but I like how he allows the female vocalist to take a bit of a lead in this particular tune.

This music is timeless, and I admire him for not selling out.

  • Sinead O'Connor ;-)

  • compare and contrast the genius of this with the utter tripe that passes for 'music' these days...Jeez, i'm beginning to sound like my father used to go on at me...scary!

  • Fantastic music.... And a great video. This was 20 years ago!

  • MATT JOHNSON IS A GENIUS!

  • Christ almighty, who is that woman?

  • Sinead O'Connor.

  • Well yeah, doing the vocal track, but who is the woman in the video?

  • Always Masterful! What an underated hero! This album might not be his best but as always such quality!

  • Magnifique chanson.

  • Really like this song... he doesnt sing of what real love is. In real love there is no pain and suffering .Emotion isnt truth (^_^)

  • Hi Inbliss13)***

Why do you exactly mean by "real love" and "emotion isnt truth" ?

Indeed this song is fantastic, i do adore !

Discovered this wonderfull album in 1990, LOVE THE THE and the "wisedom" of Matt Johnson since then §§§

  • Hello maryline1971~My answer to your question is that the most important LOVE relationship one can have is the relationship with the source of the questions within. From there ALL love grows . The essence of the love is self love first. All begins and ends with ourselves. Truth is directly from the heart not the mind/head.. (^_^) Je vous invite à parler en privé avec moi de ce sujet si vous aimeriez. Me pardonner si je comets erreurs. Mon français n'est pas si bon. Avoir un jour agréable.

  • Even in real love you have pain and suffering.. no relationship is just simple and perfect..

  • Respectfully, pain and suffering are chosen emotions. Relationships are simple we make them conplicated through control and attachments. (^_^)

  • I disagree! Sometimes you don't know what life will serve up, no matter how much you feel in control of your life!

  • but whera're you matt jonhson?

  • Like it.

  • Beautiful on so many levels.

    Mx

  • too true unfortunately

    even my liver's singing along

  • Matt Johnson doesn't know that I love him with a love that will last forever.

  • I am afraid this is the way that love is supposed to be.

Matt you have cought the bittersweet essence of love.

  • Spot on!

  • brilliant song, brilliant songwriter

  • looking back on the decades of the xxth century - as from the 80's, seems like nothing new has been invented. Rock, rocknroll, blues, jazz, jazz/fusion,pop, etc, ......The only stuff they're pumping out is plastic copies from yor

  • Yes the 80's is a wonderful period.

Soon it will be unearthed and remembered

for all the great music is created, not copied.

I just think of what it would be like some young person coming across this music for the very first time. Do you remember the affect it had on you.

Just imagine their excitement then surprise that it came from the 80's.

  • great song

  • So it's not just me then? There's only two kinds of music - good and bad!!

  • This song sends shivers down my spine and takes me right back to the 80's and a real bad time in my life. I loved the song then but love it even more now because the music of today is lacking the kind of emotion and creativity that went into this song and album. The music of yester year in general was so much better than the crap available today. Makes me really appreciate hearing talent and originality for the first time in a very long time...

  • this came out in 1991, i saw him 4 times in 4 days in ATL...my fav songwriter ever.

  • it was '89, my bad..

  • @TheFreedomfighterguy I hear ya brother! I love and loathe that time. Mostly love it. When alternative was truly different.

  • @TheFreedomfighterguy everyone thinks the same as you mate, todays music is shit,

  • @TheFreedomfighterguy The 'yesteryear' mentality is too easy. Recognize that this music has sentimental value to you and that, over the years, you've collected a set of music I doubt you stray from very often. It's good to have music to call your own, but you can't just brush off ALL modern music like that. Yes, GaGa and Katy Perry are dumb as hell, but Milli Vanilli had 4 top 40 songs the year this song came out. There are more resources to find music now than ever before. Use them, abuse them.

  • @TheFreedomfighterguy I hear you, this song and THE THE in general takes me back to the Late 80's, Early 90's a creative magical time in my life. This music re-inspires me every time I hear it..

  • @TheFreedomfighterguy you suck

  • Not heard this for about ten years, all my hairs have stood up! It's just class :) WHY did Sinead block it? I genuinely don't know :)

  • anyone else notice his haunted look at the end, as he's staring out at the new york skyline, and he's looking at the world trade towers,...spooky, huh?...

  • I love matt johnson

  • It's a shame that Sinead blocked the release of this song. It's a sensual blend of love gone wrong and longing for what could have been.

  • I didn´t know that. Why did she do that, her voice is fantastic on this song - like it could go through glass.

  • Wonderful song, one of the best memories of the eighties

  • I didn't check all responces but looked like the WTC about 4 minutes 45 seconds. Yes I did buy cd many years ago. Interesting song. Re release it!!

  • Thanks for this!

  • STUNNING SONG.

such a shame the bitch sinead o'connor would'nt let matt release this after giving the go-ahead for the video. It would have been a huge hit and straight after her huge hit ..nothing compares to you.Matt could have at lat got the MASSIVE recognition he deserves, he's an amazing talent.

  • Agreed, stupid bitch....

  • Agreed, what a inexplicably stupid woman....

  • cheers mate,

  • That´s what I call goose pimple music.

  • great song...awesome video

  • Such a powerful song...

  • magical!

  • Classic track.... Thanx for posting..

  • Can't get enough of this song. It's my most favourite of The The.

Do play it on a rainy day, sitting by the open window, the music just not drowned out by the sound of the falling rain... Sounds magic!

  • who is the female vocalist?

  • Sinead O'Conner :) Great song even afer 20 years.

  • Sinead O Connor

  • One of those beautifully tragic songs. Absolute magic.

  • Utterly beautiful song. Saw them in portsmouth 89 too, easily best gig ever been too

  • Both song and vid are superb.

  • One of Matt Johnson's best songs

  • a very realistic romantic song that everyone forgot about.

  • You just don't hear music like this anymore. So pure...Class

  • This song brings back haunting memories for me.

  • one of the most honest song ever.

  • great shot of the twin towers at the end.

  • I saw the play at Portsmouth in 89 on the mind bomb tour and it's still the best gig i ever saw. shame this never made it as a single it was scheduled for release but Sinead O'conner would not let him release it. It would have meant a number one for sure. Beautiful song. Come back Matt the world needs you.

  • Matt's pretty sexy here....

  • Phwoor... not arf!

  • Anyone else see him at Brixton back in 89?

  • Mind Bomb is one of the best albums of all time
