This beautiful score {and DO listen to the other selections posted by pangpangLuckyLuke} ~ it brought ENNIO MORRICONE (at last!) the first of his Oscar nominations...
... but also his first disappointment, losing out to Giorgio Moroder's 'Midnight Express'. Moroder did a few more films, whereas Morricone would go on to perform at the United Nations
Morricone has been desperately underrated by the Academy, which they finally realized and gave him an apologetic Honorary Oscar; however, he is one of the greatest film composers of all time, and with basically a mere nomination or two per decade he is also one of the most sadly overlooked. Oh well, us listeners know his greatness!
Are these recordings from vinyl? Or does the soundtrack now exist in a more readily accessible form?
Re; liking or disliking the film. I agree, it's not to everyone's taste. I read a review that surmised that Malick deliberately created characters with whom we are only remotely sympathetic; they, like everything else in the film, bear no significance beyond the general patterns of nature. He is not proposing that we are "one" with nature, but that we ARE nature.
@IngaMarr I loved the film & did not find the characters unsympathetic. We created the world where the many must toil at their own expense for the benefit of the few, not nature. Nature's way is not better, just more equitable.

@HughHue Yeah, Moroder went on to win two more Oscars. Morricone could have won at least an Oscar for Days of Heaven or The Mission.

Check out the tracks on Morricone's 'Two Mules for Sister Sara.' It should be on Amazon.
As for the critics, it seems they're dying off. These days, praise for the film is almost unanimous.
