we have like 6 thomas and they ALWAYS break down. lucky we have the good old visions for spear. We are getting rid of the thomass and get all bluebirds
@47cardinals Caterpillar's Electronic Technologies I Think. The Flat C7 is better than the ACERT because the ACERT has Electric Issues Everywhere. The C7 (3126) is known to have ACERT issues even though 3/4 have them and dont know it...
I wonder i notice most school bus are not Auto trans. Are there any school bus new that come with man trans or are all new ones auto. when i was in school we had a bunch of 1980s blue bird S1700s and most had 5 speed man but then in 1990s when they got new blue bird tc/2000 and navistar most were auto. I like auto but i still like the old fashion stick shifts now and then...
Yes, buses were aviliable with manual transmissions, up until the last few model years. Districts find it much easier to hire drivers when they run buses with automatic transmissions. Our last bus powered by a manual transmission was a 2001 Blue Bird International 3800. It has a 5 speed Spicer transmission. and was recently retired.
Wow! Buses sure have changed since the last time I drove. They look like cars on the inside, now. Last school bus I drove was a 1988 International Bluebird S1700 with a 7.3L diesel and an Allison AT-545.
Not a dumb question at all: There is a linksys router on the bus because our buses are ALL equipped with Honeywell Chaporone digital cameras. The information the camera collects is stored on hard drives located on the bus. The hard drives are somehow (idk how) connected to the wireless router, therefore the T/D can pull the information from the hard drives within his office using a wireless connection.
I'll explain it differently if thats hard to understand.
No, that makes sense. The bus company in our refinery runs Gillig-Phantoms that have been retrofitted with on-board cameras. However, these are suction-cupped to the windshield. Our mechanic told me it's for the cameras, but I never see signs the cameras are operational, and as security, no one from the company has ever mentioned what they saw on video.
Another question: Do more of your customers prefer air starters, or electric? Is there a large benefit to air starters?
I would venture a guess that most school buses have electric start. Many districts, the board of education in New York requires the driver to "pump down" the brakes when leaving the vehicle unattended, as to alievate the concern of the vehcile rolling away.
The only buses with air start that i am aware of is the Crown buses (type D flat-nose 60s,70s, 80s, 90s vintage)
Where I am located in Texas, our school busses by law are required to have seatbelts not only for the driver but for all students as well. I am wondering what the common solution is to this. Do you have individual seats or is it a bench seat with 2 seatbelts?
Also, do you still use International conventionals? I see BB for a few other districts, but I think most of those are Freightliner pushers, or an unknown conventional.
New York also requires lap seat belts. They are pushing the requirement of sholder and lap belts. I don't see this as an enforceable law, unless a panel is situated within the driver's view and there is a buzzer connected to EACH seat belt
This would also reduce capacity because it would require 2 in a seat instead of 3 in a seat. In my own opinion compartimentization is safe enough, adding seatbelts AS A REQUIREMENT (to wear them) only makes the drivers job harder and more complicated.
Added: yes we still run Blue Bird Internationals, we have one 2001 and 2 2002 Int Birds (3800 T-444-Es) We used to be all Bird Ints, then we switched to IC for a couple of years, and started getting visions.
Yes, i like the bird vision also. Yes, this bus came from the factory with an air door. But, you have to specify that you want an air door when the spec sheet is sent to the dealer. Otherwise, it will come with a manual door.
The following options are avilabile for the service door:
-manual outward swinging door
- electric outward swinging door (YUCK)
- Air Outward swinging door
I don't know if the jackknife type door is still available.....
I really like that instrument panel lighting...this seems like a really full-featured bus.I always thought that little window by the door was neat, some of the old Wayne buses used to have a similar window.

Also (and this may be a dumb question) but why the Linksys router next to the instrument panel?

Retrochad,
I like the insturment panel, the 2008+ visions have a white insturment panel and a very information rich screen that tells all kinds of things.
This panel tells, the miles/gallon, % of turbo boost and several other things. Also, the signals and hazards beep (it is turned off on this bus)
This bus does have very nice options.... 210 HP is nice (over the 190 norm)
The little window in front of the service door is called "the safety view window"
