@truth7seeker In what way does your comment relate to what the commentator said. I hope you are aware of the difference between colonisation and slavery. As @TCt83067695 said, colonisation was carried out by white catholics that is the British, in what frame of mind would you link slavery to colonisation in relation to what the person said. Before you start lecturing people on the history of our forefathers, i advise you to read the comment first and stop flinging insults at people.

Samba Pati feat. Roy Hargrove - African childhood Music Video
A nostalgic recollection of old photographs from Angelique's childhood in West Africa, set to the rhythm of SAMBA PATI feat. Roy Hargrove (OYO - 2010).
Lyrics translates: My name is Shango...I've been here for a long time NOT today...My power is the Axe....That is what I use to chase the thieves and gossips/Wicked
I remember the first time I heard this song at a used CD store, the hairs on the nape of my neck stood up. I bought the CD and have been a fan ever since ...
Ṣàngó is a Sky Father, god of thunder and lightning. The Oyo Kingdom was sacked and pillaged as part of a jihad by the Islamic Sokoto Caliphate.
The energy given from this Deity of Thunder is also a major symbol of African resistance against an enslaving European culture. He rules the color red and white; his sacred number is 6; his symbol is the double-headed axe, which represents swift and balanced justice as well as the Art of Dance and Entertainment.
so is she speaking in Yoruba then? Is she speaking of the same sango? She says her name is Shango. Do the translation in benin and nigeria match then?
i think she is speaking of the same thing, shango was a god of thunder and lightning in the Oyo empire ( section of yorubas in nigeria), i think the translations match those of benin.
sorry i'm being pesistant. I'm really against idol worshiping but i'm torn as i like the song. If she's saying "oruko mi ni shango". in yoruba itd mean her name is shango. which is not possible. so i think on some level i'm just hoping she's talking about something different. Is there a full lyrics or translation anyone?
my country was not colonised by Arab muslims, it was colonised by greedy white christains. Even if i wasn't a muslim, I don't think I would still see the sense in worshiping a fellow human being (even those that could perform a few magical tricks.)
Besides no offense but what does this have to do with the full lyrics or translation of the song?
Dude, your religion is yours; other people should have the right to believe in whatever they please. So, humble down and practice the teachings of your faith rather than lecturing other people.
O boy o boy.. If I could kiss you, I would. Argue with the not cause their visual spectrum of true identoity is not existent. They have no sense of self and their conscience which does thinking is dead. Asd a result they have left adopted the govt [which is blind] to do their thinking for them. Before Africa can rise again, it must me culturally free, then politically free and ultimately economically independent.
/ Orou komin nin Shango / Mon wayé oti kpè ko tché nin / Kabi omon kpé émin nin aara / Manamana min manlé awon olofofo / Orou komin nin Shango / Mon wayé oti kpè ko tché nin / Agbara min nin aaké / Ohouni lé olé,kpèlou olofofo Shango [chorus]/ Orou komin nin Shango/ Mon wayé oti kpè ko tché nin/ Kabi omon kpé émin nin aara/ Manamana min manlé awon olofofo/ [chorus]/ Enin bodé èkou o Shango bodé
LynxRunner has transcribed the lyrics according to the French-influenced orthography that is available in Benin. Please bear with him; we have a duty to respect the way others do their own thing. "Yoruba" is practically a generic category now; you'll find variations of spelling of Yoruba words (Orixa, Xango, Iemanja, etc.) as far out as Brazil, Cuba and the West Indies. It is no longer prudent to insist that they spell such words the way we still do back home in Western Nigeria.
yes, i have to completely agree with outreachat in that the lyrics are based on french-influenced phonetics that many yoruba in benin republic use to write the language.
we must also remember that angelique is not a yoruba but speaks a dahomean language similar to the Gun used among dahomean peoples in nigeria. so her accent is not exactly yoruba but its much better than some other non-fluent yoruba users i've heard.
Shango exist in the Dahomean culture also, he is called Hevioso...The word "So" means stone in BOTH languages. The name Hevioso, literally means he who throws fire stones. ie Lightning. The traditional name of Shango in Yoruba is Jakuta, also stone thrower. I hope this helps.
@iwindara i am jsut saying not to make mad but angelique kidjo has yoruba in her shes yoruba fon and has some english ancestory her dads yoruba her mothers fon she was raised in the rleigion of vodou
Shango. Yoruba god of thunder and focus of a cult mainly in Trinidad and Granada, which is primarily of 19th-cent. African origin, and resembles Jamaican Pocomania, Cuban Santería, and the Afro-Brazilian cults. Animal sacrifices may be made to the particular deity whose practical help is sought through possession of his devotee or through simple forms of divination or by dreams and prophecy; healing and exorcism of evil spirits are also prominent.
Angelique is an awsome woman this song got me 2nd place in a talent show that is hard to get people to appreciate other art forms that is not singing. And being Hispanic it was wierd for people to see me dance to this music. But I love it and got lots of great compliments by many. I have all of her albums and can not for the new one in May!
What's a latino? A race or a series of ethnic groups who have the spanish language in common. As far as I know there are white latinos black latinos, chinese latinos and mixed latinos!
@malfini1 - Also, not thoe that have spanish language in common. Don't forget about our portuguesse cousins that settled in brazil, as well as the french settlers that settled in Haiti until they were kicked out after the rebellion. A Latino is pretty much someone who has cultural roots from the Roman-Latin Empire. These people broke up and made up Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French (and also Romanian).... and these were the colonizers of what was known as "Latin America". :-)
