whats to stop the dealership from changing the trade in date? easy its called the department of motor vehicles when a dealer takes a car on trade in it gets regierstered to that dealer until someone buys it .its includes date mileage and so on and so forth one of the other prerequirements for the program was that you had to own the vehicle for a year in order for it to count

OMG 3 car dealers have committed suicide recently who are owed money, from this scam of a program, by the government. One in our city today. He left a note talking about financial problems. He was on the news a couple months ago because they still owed him $300,000 and it was financially destroying him and his family. Back in the 40's, 50's, 60's and part of the 70's auto makers would make a different looking car each and every year. But with todays technology they make one car for up to 12 years. It just seems like if they could come up with a different design every year then, they should be able to do it very easily today. Or at least don't run them for so long. Body changes are too slow in the market today.

You're right, they could make money off used cars but that wasn't the deal. The dealer knew the rules when they started. There are procedures and there is checks and balances and it will take time. Some deals will not be paid because they didn't follow procedure. Who would buy a CLUNKER? Have you looked at some of these cars people brought in? There are some good, but mostly bad. In my job I work with many different dealership and yes I talk to them everyday.

my friend works at a dealership..She told me the only people that took advantage were rich people, they would buy tyheir servants old clunker for next to nothing( fresh ink on the newly printed titles) and then pay cash for their newest vehicle either for themselves or to give to kids, or grand kids/

Dealerships would have no reason to do such a thing. People would only trade in their cars as a clunker if the trade-in value is less than the $3500-4500 they get through CARS. That would mean the dealership loses money by scrapping trade-ins, because in all likelihood they're all worth more than $4500. On top of that, they need to wait for the money to come from the government-- at least they have a chance at getting more money faster by selling it.
I have my doubts any of this is true. In order for car dealers to steal millions wouldn't they first need to be paid? On average auto dealerships have received only 2% of what they are owed by the Obama administration due to poor management. Another failed government program. Run a national health care system? I don't think so!

JOE... If the dealers read how the program pays out they would have known it would take time. Its checks and balance. If a vehicle does not meet the specifications of the program then they will not get paid. Thats why they were told to be very careful when making the CARS deal. Make sure they had INSURANCE and REGISTRATION for at least one year. The fuel mileage when the used car was new compared to the new car they were buying. That would be irresonsible to just pay dealers without checking.

You have to have owned the vehicle for over a year prior to trading. Vehicle registration is the proof. There is a stipulation that prevents even an individual from buying a car for 100 and going to trade it for 4500. This info is not accurate.
I was for the "Cars" proposal, thinking that it was only for the public to improve their MPG. This would also be an opprounity for people to think about hybrids. But, for the dealerships to take money from the program is just stupid. It defeats the purpose in my opinion. And if there is a clause in the bill allowing dealerships to do this, then that's just bad policy. The bill should be for the public, not for the businesses to recoup their losses or anything else.

Have you ever seen a rich union worker? No because even though they pay more, they work less hours and pay union dues. The quality needs to be stepped up in American cars. You pay the same amount for the same size "import" for half the quality. Let take a look at the engine in cars today. Imports have better tolerances than American cars. I love American cars, I own 4 American cars and 2 imports. But look at the tolerances in a services manual. Import engines simply live longer.
The "Cash 4 Clunkers" wasn't design for everyone thats why there was only 1billion dollars in the fund. The dealers can change the dates but the SSN can't be changed. The person buying the car will get a 1099 next year for the fund and will have to report it on their taxes. A lot of people are saying that it is a waste. The wars are a waste, we are spending money over there that you can't use or get back, but I guess that is ok.
Thats right... Americans are buying Japanese cars (which are built right here in the USA) because the are built to a smaller tolerance (better). Check a domestic car for proper hood, doors, hatch/trunk. Compare it to the same car sitting beside it on a new lot. They will be different. Japanese cars (they are not imported because they are built HERE) will have a 3mm gap from begining to end on every opening. GM, FORD and Chrysler just need to make better cars.

You are the misguided one. American cars are assembled here as well. Most of the parts for American cars are from all over the world (mostly China). I've been in automotive field for 30 years and I've seen tons of parts come in for your Ford tow truck with "MADE IN CHINA" on it. Alot of times the sticker is removed, but its still made in China. All cars have lighter metal, plastic fenders (check with GM) etc. The union is what helped kill GM. Canada makes a boat load of parts without the boat.
I completely agree, the union is what killed GM, and they should have gone bankrupt instead of becoming state run. Granted there are imports with great engine life, but to generealize American cars and say they are inferior is simply rediculous. Just think about the Ford V8's. There are more Town Cars and Crown Vic with astronomical mileage than ANY import, and they still look good to because they arent as suseptible to dents and corrosion.

The fact remains that American vehicles are and have been of great quality, and their losses recently have nothing to do with build quality or even sales, as they have consistently outsold the imports. It all has to do with overhead costs (mainly union.pensions), which can be as much as ten times the cost of producing an import in some cases.
I deal with GM, Dodge, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda and Toyota every single day. And I'm here to tell you that the domestic market quality is so very poor. The parts are made in CHINA. The parts aren't made at the assembly plant because they only assemble there. If you need to tell yourself otherwise to make yourself feel good then be my guest. Look up the recalls on the Domestic cars vs Imported... it will blow your mind. Oh those Ford V8 that crack intakes and blow coolant thru the alternator. Nice

Go by a Ford dealership and ask them about there modular engines. I've replaced more than 200 intakes and alternators on your great 4.6 engine. And the great Explorer that killed because of the light of the SUV. Ford blame Firestone. Ford dropped the air pressure so it would not vibrate, but the exhaust ran beside the right rear tire that help cause the blow out. It was only the right rear that blew on all of the vehicles. Chevy, Dodge, Nissan, Toyota all used that same tire with no issues.

You are defying the laws of physics. You can not produce 800 hp in a 4.6. Look it up and call an engineer. 281 cubic inches can not produce 2.8 hp per square inch. Most engines produce about .7 hp per square inch. Hi performance engines produce about 1.5 per square inch. The numbers you have are hopefully numbers that will not be achieved. Remember flywheel hp is different than true WBHP. Get your facts straight STILL WET BEHIND THE EARS.

This guy knows nothing about the program, the vehicles had to be titled and insured for at least one year. Also the fuel economy is set up by the government (e.p.a.) not the manufacturer. Could go on and on with the flaws in this. but it was a horrible program that was a waste of good vehicles and good tax payer dollars that could have been spent elsewhere

He was on the news a couple months ago because they still owed him $300,000 and it was financially destroying him and his family. It just seems like if they could come up with a different design every year then, they should be able to do it very easily today. Or at least don't run them for so long. You're right, they could make money off used cars but that wasn't the deal. The dealer knew the rules when they started. There are procedures and there is checks and balances and it will take time. Some deals will not be paid because they didn't follow procedure. Who would buy a CLUNKER? Have you looked at some of these cars people brought in? There are some good, but mostly bad. In my job I work with many different dealership and yes I talk to them everyday.

I'm sure there are thousands of rich people where you live and they traded in a CLUNKER to get a deal of $3500 or $4500 to purchase a fuel efficient vehicle. Maybe you should ask your friend if she dealt with every customer that can in the dealership. The CLUNKER had to be in their name for at least a year and insured. It doesn't matter where you live, the rules are the same.

my friend works at a dealership..She told me the only people that took advantage were rich people, they would buy tyheir servants old clunker for next to nothing( fresh ink on the newly printed titles) and then pay cash for their newest vehicle either for themselves or to give to kids, or grand kids/

Who in the federal government actually verifies the state ownership records? What is their job title and how can I contact that department? How is that dept funded? Dealerships would have no reason to do such a thing. People would only trade in their cars as a clunker if the trade-in value is less than the $3500-4500 they get through CARS. That would mean the dealership loses money by scrapping trade-ins, because in all likelihood they're all worth more than $4500. On top of that, they need to wait for the money to come from the government-- at least they have a chance at getting more money faster by selling it.

I have my doubts any of this is true. In order for car dealers to steal millions wouldn't they first need to be paid? On average auto dealerships have received only 2% of what they are owed by the Obama administration due to poor management. Another failed government program. Run a national health care system? I don't think so!

JOE... If the dealers read how the program pays out they would have known it would take time. Its checks and balance. If a vehicle does not meet the specifications of the program then they will not get paid. Thats why they were told to be very careful when making the CARS deal. Make sure they had INSURANCE and REGISTRATION for at least one year. The fuel mileage when the used car was new compared to the new car they were buying. That would be irresonsible to just pay dealers without checking.

There is no reason to destroy a reliable working car. How many needy people do you know that could use reliable transportation to drive to a better job? How many students could use a reliable car to go to school? How many people are driving unsafe cars because they can not afford to replace them with a new car?

You have to have owned the vehicle for over a year prior to trading. Vehicle registration is the proof. There is a stipulation that prevents even an individual from buying a car for 100 and going to trade it for 4500. This info is not accurate.

I was for the "Cars" proposal, thinking that it was only for the public to improve their MPG. This would also be an opprounity for people to think about hybrids. But, for the dealerships to take money from the program is just stupid. It defeats the purpose in my opinion. And if there is a clause in the bill allowing dealerships to do this, then that's just bad policy. The bill should be for the public, not for the businesses to recoup their losses or anything else.

I'm not rich but I'm against this, the govt. (BOTH administrations we've had) have been further bankrupting the country.
These programs aren't free and the money has to be paid back.
This is ALL money that will have to be paid back to the Federal Reserve, which is no more federal than Federal Express (it's privately owned by bankers FOR profit). If the Fed decided to call in all of this debt, EVERY American would be required to pay $40,000!

Have you ever seen a rich union worker? No because even though they pay more, they work less hours and pay union dues. The quality needs to be stepped up in American cars. You pay the same amount for the same size "import" for half the quality. Let take a look at the engine in cars today. Imports have better tolerances than American cars. I love American cars, I own 4 American cars and 2 imports. But look at the tolerances in a services manual. Import engines simply live longer.

The "Cash 4 Clunkers" wasn't design for everyone thats why there was only 1billion dollars in the fund. The dealers can change the dates but the SSN can't be changed. The person buying the car will get a 1099 next year for the fund and will have to report it on their taxes. A lot of people are saying that it is a waste. The wars are a waste, we are spending money over there that you can't use or get back, but I guess that is ok.

Thats right... Americans are buying Japanese cars (which are built right here in the USA) because the are built to a smaller tolerance (better). Check a domestic car for proper hood, doors, hatch/trunk. Compare it to the same car sitting beside it on a new lot. They will be different. Japanese cars (they are not imported because they are built HERE) will have a 3mm gap from begining to end on every opening. GM, FORD and Chrysler just need to make better cars.

You are completely misguided. Japanese cars are simply assembled here, by non-union workers earning half domestic manf. pay, with no retirement. $0 profit goes to America. Yes, check the fit and the gauge of the metal, it is a FACT that Japn cars use lighter metal. You wanna question reliability? NEARLY ALL police cars, taxis, emergency vehicles, work vans, tow trucks, and tractors are reliable American vehicles. A ford tow truck will be towing your import soon lol!!

You are the misguided one. American cars are assembled here as well. Most of the parts for American cars are from all over the world (mostly China). I've been in automotive field for 30 years and I've seen tons of parts come in for your Ford tow truck with "MADE IN CHINA" on it. Alot of times the sticker is removed, but its still made in China. All cars have lighter metal, plastic fenders (check with GM) etc. The union is what helped kill GM. Canada makes a boat load of parts without the boat.

I completely agree, the union is what killed GM, and they should have gone bankrupt instead of becoming state run. Granted there are imports with great engine life, but to generealize American cars and say they are inferior is simply rediculous. Just think about the Ford V8's. There are more Town Cars and Crown Vic with astronomical mileage than ANY import, and they still look good to because they arent as suseptible to dents and corrosion.

Either way, origin of parts, etc. has nothing to do with it. The fact remains that American vehicles are and have been of great quality, and their losses recently have nothing to do with build quality or even sales, as they have consistently outsold the imports. It all has to do with overhead costs (mainly union.pensions), which can be as much as ten times the cost of producing an import in some cases.

I deal with GM, Dodge, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda and Toyota every single day. And I'm here to tell you that the domestic market quality is so very poor. The parts are made in CHINA. The parts aren't made at the assembly plant because they only assemble there. If you need to tell yourself otherwise to make yourself feel good then be my guest. Look up the recalls on the Domestic cars vs Imported... it will blow your mind. Oh those Ford V8 that crack intakes and blow coolant thru the alternator. Nice

Go by a Ford dealership and ask them about there modular engines. I've replaced more than 200 intakes and alternators on your great 4.6 engine. And the great Explorer that killed because of the light of the SUV. Ford blame Firestone. Ford dropped the air pressure so it would not vibrate, but the exhaust ran beside the right rear tire that help cause the blow out. It was only the right rear that blew on all of the vehicles. Chevy, Dodge, Nissan, Toyota all used that same tire with no issues.

The 4.6 is bulletproof. Mustang racers build stock internal 4.6s to 800+ HP. Police cars and taxis put scores of miles on them, largely trouble free. As far as the tire problem, which really dates you, it was clearly the tire bc it didnt happen when when a different brand was on the truck. Explorers are rock solid, as are all Ford trucks, people love them, and 18 yr old trucks are still on the road. How about U go by a Jib site, and start spewing ur import nonsense, you'll be laughed away.

Yes it dates me and I know what I'm talking about. Police cars are out of service at 75,000. I know because I am an officer and secondly we have replace a lot of the 4.6 engines due to ring smoke. Many times in chases the rings can not seal. Not to mention the transmission failures. Stock internals will not survive 800+HP and manufacture can do that. Remember you can not produce more than 2 HP per square inch. Look it up.

You are defying the laws of physics. You can not produce 800 hp in a 4.6. Look it up and call an engineer. 281 cubic inches can not produce 2.8 hp per square inch. Most engines produce about .7 hp per square inch. Hi performance engines produce about 1.5 per square inch. The numbers you have are hopefully numbers that will not be achieved. Remember flywheel hp is different than true WBHP. Get your facts straight STILL WET BEHIND THE EARS.

I simply stated that Ford builds an exceptional product, which statistics support, and that your import sales' profits go DIRECTLY to the base country, REGARDLESS of part origin.
