Growing up in the north valley I was pulled over at least a hundred times in those years and have to admit that luck was on my side when they were never able to pin anything on me. , I got tickets for driving 38 in a 35 mph zone, hitch hiking, no license plate light, bald tires and on and on.

The riots happened because, black folks (no disrespect for fear of a riot for not calling them "African-American"), decided they didn't want to go to jail for the crime they committed. The vehicle is usually towed for protection of the person's property. It went so far beyond that because of hooligans that wanted to thwart justice and not see their family in jail.

Sure, that's part of it. Have you never read of the many "white" riots committed by people who disagreed with the law, or didn't like the way they were being treated? The fact is that this, like so many things in life, is not simply "Black and White". Human beings and the societies they create are infinitely complex. And a part of the reason the riots happened was because police officers were (and do) routinely break(ing) the law or simply acting in a hateful manner towards "black folks".

The riots happened because of years of bad conditions caused by racism.  African Americans were forbidden to live in most of the city, so they were crammed into a small area. They were forbidden most good jobs, so they had less money. They were routinely disrespected and harassed by police officers, who escalated the riots by shooting people, oftentimes in the back. As the riot went on, the desperate people were continually threatened, killed, and denied access to grocery stores.

haha you're silly. of course there is no truly adequate term for "American who is mostly likely descendant of a person bought or kidnapped in Africa and enslaved in American and who is therefore treated as a second class citizen" any more than "European American" can adequately describe the variety of ancestries and histories that can be attributed to the term, but it is the socially accepted respectable term. "Black" and "White" are just a wee bit sillier, aren't they?

As far as the term African American goes, again, it's just a way of saying "person with this history, this skin tone, this set of prejudices to overcome" etc. Sure, in a sense just as meaningless as the term "Woman" for "Vagina-haver" sense... & in casual conversation most of my "Black" friends prefer the term "Black"... but the term was coined in part to convey respect in formal settings.

It is truely terrible when anger and hostility, however defensible, results in murder and mayhem, especially when innocents are caught up in it. Certainly one act of racism does not excuse another, and many leaders, both "black" and "white" (as well as other races) have made far more progress towards understanding utilizing peaceful means. Your post is a good reminder that when combating injustice, we must strive to be peaceful.

If we can understand how good people do bad things, maybe we can make it so it happens less often. That was the real point of it, the real message. Violence is okay if you are black and are angry at "whitey." And I do not accept that, but apparently you do. That is where we differ, my friend.

i did listen to the video. i agree that the response was justified, but still don't believe that violence is the answer. and actually, blacks commit more crimes against THEMSELVES than to whites. i don't think it's up to the oppressors to set the boiling point for the oppressed.

i think that this oppressors have a huge part in riots like this one.. impoverished people commit more crimes than wealthy people.. true.. there are more black people living in poverty now than white people.. true (never mind mexicans and asians and all that for now) black people commit crimes against their own regularly.. true.. but many grow up with no dad, druggy mommas, and no education or money.. the question is when did this awful cycle start and how do we stop it?
