Being made up of hydrgoen and helium, the gas giants have more in common with the sun than rocky planets like ours which are too small to hold on to light elements such as hydrogen and helium.
The only reason they are not completely different is because most of the universe is made up of a small number of different elements.

That means in the past, when the Earth was Uranus, it was over 3 times larger than it is now. Why would that be? The other three giant planets are Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. These gas giants all have diameters greater than 48000 kilometers. The other five planets are called the small planets. The small planets all have diameters less than 13000 kilometers. You have it backwards! Mercury is baby Earth, Venus is teenager Earth, Mars is earth in the future, and so on. The gas planets being so far from the sun have no way to recycle/ burn the gases it emits, therefore it continues to grow in mass.
