Actually it was filmed in China such locals used were the Gobi desert, and Lanzhou which runs along the ancient Chinese silk road. The cinematography of this film played a huge part and it indeed was all China

Rotten Tomatoes gave it only 27%, Metacritic gave it 49 out of 100. It grossed only $7 million world wide, as compared to say, "The Dark Knight", which grossed $500 million in the US alone.

They completely ruined the actual story to hollywoodise this movie.

I just saw this movie. It was very long. But it is a very good movie to watch! Defintely did not waste my time! I think they coulda showed the viewers a bit more of the horror of Nanjing in the beginning, it woulda made the viewers have a stronger understanding for the children affected by it and also the main character because it was an eye opener for him.

When I watched it in Hong Kong, it seems that they have taken out the scenes where George Hogg was held in the Nationalists' prison. According to James MacManus, the real Hogg was locked up for a week and that was the time the Nationalist army started to pick up kids there for conscription.
