Actually the economy of California is number 5 in the world. And I would bet that our economy is in that position because of our outstanding university system and industries like techonolgy, not due to illegal aliens mowing lawns. Furthermore, the presence of poor illegal aliens places a drain on state services. Wilson attempted to address this in 187 but a liberal judge overruled him. Now CA is going bankrupt trying to pay for services for all these poor illegal aliens.

The deficits are caused by people making less (and thus contributing less in taxes) and ripoffs like the Enron Enery Brownouts and Blackouts. Plus you have a ton of Bond issues passed by initiative and the legislature. Maybe you should blame Aids on Mexicans.

The analogy with Iraq is much more accurate than you think. In this case, Saddam Hussein plays the role of Sahkasvilli. The Kurds want their own homeland, a Kurdistan if you will. That's why Saddam cracked down on them. Also why the Turks are nervous to be honest with you. The Kurds of Iraq play the role of south Ossetians, or Chechnyans, or Quebecois in my own country. If we are to continue energy-consuming lifestyles the price must be paid somehow and I personally would prefer small controlled packets of toxicity than the air around me being steeped in toxicity.
As for Pete Wilson I find him refreshing rational for a Republican. He laid out his general rationale for supporting John McCain quite well.

It is indeed true that Nuclear Reactors can do alot of damage. But considering the huge number of Nuclear reactors around the world a couple of (understood and easily preventable)accidents is an exceedingly small price. And a terrorist target? The Iraq war is very different from the South Ossetian/Georgian/Russian conflict. The Russians did arm and train South Ossetian rebels who were shelling Georgia. The Georgians responded and the Russians responded even harder. And Ossetians are not ethnically Russians(slavs) they are Russians because Russia gave them passports. I'd say they deserve at least 50 percent of the blame. Don't get me wrong Sahkashvilli did the wrong thing and Georgia had been doing wrong for years. That doesn't mean Russia didn't. I don't see how your Iraq analogy holds water though. Those conflicts have far less in common than they share. I'd like to see Georgia let go of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, but I'd also like to see Russia let go of Chechnya. I guess with your PHD on the subject you could tell me all about the history of the region.

Putting aside the issue of immigration, which can be very complex, I disagree with Pete Wilson on his view of the Republican strategy for energy. Palin is another Cheney, LITERALLY wedded to big oil (her husband works for BP) - do you think they're even going to give a second look to alternative energy sources that will help us become energy independent more than drilling would?

I'm liberal overall except for immigration. I've never before seen an entire segment of society who upholds routinely breaking the law, and when you try to enforce the law, the whole segment of society says it's discrimination.
Sneaking over the border is illegal. If you do it, you aren't an "undocumented worker" you are an illegal alien, and a criminal. Criminals should justifiably live in fear of arrest.
For some reason they want to be celebrated for doing this.

Nuclear power, according to my primitive knowledge, although it's pretty safe, does create a terrorist target, run the small risk of other accident (as happened, with deadly results, in Chernobyl, and also in 3-mile island).
Finally, nuclear power, in its present state of development, creates very dangerous waste products, wastes that we DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH, and that will remain dangerous for thousands of years.
Many say we can't responsibly leave that legacy to the future.

Republicans have always been known to single out minorities in this country. Blacks, Hispanics, Middle Eastern people. That's why most minorities vote democrat or independent because the Conservatives have demonized those ethnic groups.
