@whatyouchating If they are supposedly drinking more responsibly, their alcohol consumption on average, would be significantly less than those who binge drink. Likewise their tax burden will be lower, hence a tax increase on alcohol would not affect them that much. So why would they have to pay more? Probably it would make pubs and streets safer and more comfortable. Moreover, why would people complain about a mere tax rise in alcohol when it used your money to save the financial institution?

After 4p.m. all the cafes are practically closed in Britain. The only places left for people to socialize are pubs -so people drink when they get together. In countries like France, Portugal etc, cafes are open until very late at night. Consequently people drink more coffee than alcohol. The solution is simple - allow the cafes and tea shops to stay open until late.
