I'm sorry, but this is a disgrace to santoor. To make it so pop sounding goes against everything this instrument is meant to be. I have much respect for Shivji and his son Rahul, but seriously man, what the hell is this? At least put real instruments to support it, not digital drums and bass/keyboard track behind it.

I was afraid, with the untimely demise of Anantha Shankar, the era of soulful, serene fusion music was past.

Great it is being revived by Rahul Sharma.

(Hope his engineers will make the percussion a bit subdued on some of his recordings, though. Percussion sometimes mars the real, innate beauty of his work on recordings, though it may sound good for a disco floor.)

what you call "bollywood" music is merely an amalgam of a variety of local folk music genres. & depending on the composers, it can vary from superlative to abject, though much of it IS original.

however, for a westerner (like yourself ?) it might be tough to appreciate .. which is, in all probability, due to the culture gap.

on the other hand, you like this 'cause it's purely instrumental and therefore easily "translatable" across cultures.

Don't get me wrong, but u are probably not aware of the vast spectrum of Indian music that exists. "Bollywood" music is just film music & that too only in hindi. If u had a chance to even hear an iota of the magnificent treasure of folk and classical music from each region in India, u would be speechless. Just bengali(Indian) film music from one decade, say the 60's would be more than enough to satiate ur musical senses to the core. And I am not given to exaggeration.

Contd. Believe me, if I made u listen to those & u happen to be musically minded, u will start to find the motif & themes that they have inspired in world & bollywood music that came decades later. We don't complain when that happens bcoz music is art & art is never imitated. It is just born again in a new avatar in someone else's imagination. Copyrights don't really seem to matter anymore. After all, all music is those seven notes. Peace.
