Well, i cut and glue a choclate confectionery paper and it resonate sweet woody tone ☺☼♥♫ and much better than ducktape.. dimo is not available at my place :P
The real dimo is about 0.005 mm, that is about 0.0002" thick. Other membranes are typically far thicker. (Even cigarette paper is about 4 times thicker)
These other membranes are just too stiff to respond appropriately to the very small fluctuations in air pressure in the air column under the dimo.
So my Dizi arrived today with a pack of membranes...but no Erjiao! is there an alternative? I live in Australia so I would think locating the real stuff is going to be hard over here :(
mY teacher gave me a DiMo for our school's flute and he taught me to stick it to the flute using garlic(*that why i always have garlic with me whenever i go to practice*) and (*to my other friend's disgust*) saliva. ofcourse water can be used i suppose
The glues I've heard of to fix DIMO are basically of two types, one is "donkey-hide gelatin" (阿胶) , the other is "common bletilla tuber", a traditional Chinese herb.
The Swiss contemporary flutist Matthias Ziegler has developed, inspired by the dizi, a membrane for the silver flute, which he can "turn on" and off using a thread connected to his thumb. He turns it on at about 2:58 in video Y3PgAFSK8rg .
Can you find dimo paper in American music shops? I bought a cheap dizi flute from the internet and am not sure if I would have to purchase dimo from there as well or substitute something else.
I have a doubt. What is the difference between what sound comes from when the breath is done in the mouthpiece and the sound that comes out when the breath is done in the membrane?
can i know, why the dizi's dimo must have some wrinkles? If the dizi have no wrrinkles, then what'll it sound like. I did bought some dizi equip from yr shop, how do i chose the type of dimo that suit my dizi??
You must know the proper technique of blowing. The ambochure. And, you must ensure that the Dimo is glued with the er jiao tightly. There must be no holes or openings.
To be standard, dimo should be the inner membrane of the reed stem (芦苇的内膜). But in extreme cases or for newbies the scotch tape can be used as an alternative. However these are the only two materials I've tried.
I find that the more horizontal wrinkles you create on the dim0, the buzzier the sound gets. Four to five creases would be optimal. Do you have the same observation?
you shouldn't use egg white as the bonding fluid. you should go to chinese medicine shop and buy "ah4 jiao1". It's a kind of medicine for women, but when it comes to pasting dimo, it is sticky and long lasting.
the dimo membrane paper I have is "tubular." Is one supposed to split it out so there's a single layer? It seems the only way since it's not wide enough to overlap the hole.
haha okay, I used egg white! :-p it seemed to work pretty well except for the fact that it makes the dizi sound like a regular flute! maybe you could answer another question? My Dizi plays very well but sometimes the "buzz" stops, is there "supposed" to be a little ripple in the dimo or is it better to be very tight? thank you
1st, the lines on the dimo has to run in parallel with the length of the dizi. 2nd, u should make some wrinkles that run in perpendicular with the Dizi. The dimo needs to have a bit of a slack for the dizi sound to come out so the person in the video uses his finger to press on the dimo. Make sure your finger is dry though. Thanks - Sung Wah (Visit our website for our range of dizis and accessories. The URL is found in the beginning of the video)
I have the flute, and the membrane(dimo?) but no glue... where can I find some? Or what can I use instead?

I must say I am quite intrigued and love this sound.
Where is the best place to aquire the adhesive for the Dimo?
ChineseCalligraphy 2 years ago
I recommend ordering real erjiao and dimo online. Ive never used anything but the dimo. Scotch tape once, but there was a simple xiao-like tone.
I'm pretty sure that everything else can yield a wierd tone. For the authentic, dizi tone, you have to have the dimo.
I'm no pro, but a lot of research, practice, and patient self-teaching will get you to a satisfactory level :D

The best bonding material to use if you don't have resin is white rice.
1. Take a few pieces of cooked white rice and smash them up into a thin creamy paste using water.
2. After you wet the Dizi and get the Dimo ready apply a thin layer of the rice paste around the Dimo hole and apply the Dimo.
The rice paste will dry clear and be as strong as glue.
Zoharin 3 years ago
I membraned the second hole, and still no sound.

What are the two holes on the very end used for?
Flutenatic 4 years ago
For helping their flow, and of aesthetic use. However the Western flutes do not have these holes.

First, he spread water onto the flute. Then he used this Chinese sticky medicine (柯膠, which is made with donkey skin) to make the glue.
