@MrJpk741 Barry Sanders is not even close. 4.39s was his 40 time. (which is still very fast).. Sanders was caught on several occasions from behind. Chris Johnson is the fastest running back in NFL history this side of Bo. But on the top ten list Bo is the only RB that gets on it.

@JohnNesdoly i read up on barrys 40 time acually i found it to be 4.37 but your close enough when we're in hundredths of seconds. Since we are talking about pure strait away speed barry doesn't make, it ok but the speed of that guys cuts and also his reaction time were better than anybody on this list. too bad cut speed is not as easily measured And in Barry's defense a lot of the times he was caught from behind he was tired already from shaking tacklers over the prior 2-3 plays.

Some other names Issac Curtis, Curtis Dickey, Johnny "Lam" Jones, Herschel Walker, Warren Wells, Mercry Morris, Earl McCullough, O.J. Simpson (McCullough and Simpson were on a WR 4 x 110 relay team together at USC), Tony Dorsett (broke Simpson's record in the 100 yard dash in the Superstars competition) and some white guys Lance Alworth, Don Maynard, Don Beebe were all very fast as well.

@biglittlejujitsuman Sam Graddy should be in there too, he was 2nd to Carl Lewis in the Olympics when Ron Brown was 4th, I saw Issace Curtis once actually beat Bob Hayes in I thoink was a 60 yard dash when Hayes was older but I think you are right, it seems that the latest is always considered the greatest or in this case the fastet.

@obbor4 McElhenny was before my time but they did call him "The King", Golden Richards played with Hayes so by comparison probably was underated, Riggins with the Jets and mohawk was a fast big back, Collingsworth and Margerum not sure about, but the one who was faster than all ot them was/is Matt Jones, while at Arkansas was timed around 4.2 or 4.3 in the forty, I had forgotten about him.

I was looking for Darrell Green at No. 1, because there really was nobody who could outrun him - and even today he'd probably beat most guys in a footrace, lol. I never saw Bob Hayes play, but when you're a 100-meter dash world record holder, it certainly lets you cut into the front of this line.

@nyght999 Bo Jackson was definitely faster. He might be the biggest freak athlete in the history of sports. Herschel Walker was incredible, but you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. In terms of speed, Jackson was on another level.

@ChizTown89 Bo Jackson was my favorite player, and I've been a Raiders fan for the last 30 years. Walker had olympic speed, for a longer period of time then Bo. Walker was indeed faster. If you knew anything about any of the players mentioned you would've just kept your mouth shut. People really need to take a look into the big picture before blasting away at 40 times. Clearly in terms of speed in sports, I find your comments lacking and idiotic. In a world of sharp knives, you would be a spoon.

Ed Reed in his prime ran sub 4,3 40 times and you can't really compare 40 times and track times to football speed. It is all about how well a player can carry his pads and hershal walker, ed reed and deshawn jackson a great examples.
