Okay, this has to be one of the weirdest coincidence I've ever had. I was just watching the Video Review of Milon's Secret Castle by the Angry Video Game Nerd. After a few minutes, I thought "Man, I'd like to play Cave Story again sometime and decided to watch a video review to get me hyped again. This was the first one to show up on my search results, and the first commentary I see says that the game looks like Milon's Secret Castle...Really fucked up...
@GrandRedTheGreen it is a port, vitual consoles are emulators for a different console than the one you are using, so a pc can have a virtual console for the SNES (however virtual consoles are software, not hardware).
@doombybbr I'm assuming you don't have a Wii. On the Wii's shop app, "Virtual Console" is the section in which you can purchase retro games from past systems, such as SNES, GBA, and N64. This port of Cave Story came out to "Wiiware" which is the section for downloadable (usually indie) games that are not retro. (the game is retro but the port isn't)
I was more than happy to support Pixel and give him some money for the Wii version. The fact that he made it all by himself makes me feel like a slacker in my accomplishments....
i saw you with the machine gun...did you know that there is a secret weapon thats far better than any other if you keep the polar star until you get the booster 0.8/2.0.
its the almighty SPUR...to get it...boost up to the highest point in mimiga village on the left/middle side to get to a block then boost up to get back to the first cave then talk to the hermit gunsmith...the spur can charge up when you hold down the shoot button and doesnt use the golden triangles :D

I love Cave Story, I never played too much of the free PC version because I was waiting for this version. But it came out in the UK about 9 months after the US, but it was worth the wait. I love the music the most, of course everything else is stellar too. I think they may have fixed the piercing sound that those shards make too.
Also did you know that you can listen to any of the music from the game by doing a little trick in the option? What are your thoughts on the 3DS version?

Now they have made a new version for wii ware and have fixed sound glitches and when I play I do noy hear any bad sounds when the chip things come out of enemys
I got this game gifted to me for Christmas from one of my friends and I haven't even downloaded it, yet. I was tempted to send it back and ask for Ogre Battle 64. This review is making me want to give it a shot, though. I am one of those guys who's been gaming since the Nes (and even a little bit before!).
Well,I thought its worth the download based purely on the guy spending 5 years making it then giving it away for free. However,if it turns out the original developer is NOT getting any money from this then I will NOT be buying it.
May I suggest 'Pearl Harbor Trilogy' as an excellent way to spend 700 Wii pts.VERY fun game.
for those of you who still need something to tell them the game is gonna be good get the demo. Thats how i tested it to see if the game was worth and it sure is. I am getting the freeware version and dsi version also.
they just recently upgraded the game and now it has move musical glitches and glitches in general. Nicolas just cant get it right...I'm a programmer and I know what is causing all these glitches, its not the people who made the music who messed up, its somewhere in the code. Plus I don't think they uploaded all the songs before the loop of the game, causes a 3 second delay every time the songs changed. an example is right before a boss fight the entire game freezes for 3 seconds.
I bought the game not because of the reviews I read (the Previews looked promising, but I had read nothing on its actual score), but because I heard Rare Candy's rendition of Plantation, the title music that plays when you start up Cave Story. I absolutely loved it. I think I agree with you on every point [in your review], and... Well, that's it. Good job on reviewing it! Game creators (that's literally what Pixel is) like this need to be supported, so kudos for getting the word out!
good review man, yeah that piercing sound when the power crystals are dropped is really annoying. One other complaint I had was they butchered a lot of dialog and I prefer the original PC translation by AGTP(Aeon Genesis Translation Project), I heard they are going to release an update with the european version to fix the sound issues and some dialog...so I look forward to the update!
The wii ware version is good and such, but I would HIGHLY recommend playing the freeware PC version first. It's graphics may be less detailed, but everything else is much better in my opinion, mainly the music, though this version great for people who want a an update, or just wanted to play it on their TV rather than PC. Very nice and informative review btw. lol
thanks for the review man first of all i've got a lot of credits for the guy who created this game! but i recommand people NOT to download it on the wiiware platform and spend 1200 points since the creator's not going to get a single dollar from nintendo and he gave it out completely free of charge! so its kinda exploit from nintendo to claim about 12 dollars and keep the money its a shame the guy dont have a website where we can download the game and pay him in person FUCK NINTENDO!

Great stuff. The PC, Mac, Linux, TI99, Gp2x versions can still be downloaded off the web for free. But I agree the Wii version is the most easy to get up and running as one has to patch the other versions from original Japanese to English to make any sense of it.

I thought it was pretty creative. I guess I could have said level design and artwork if you want to nit pick.
@psyjax I haven't played Blaster Master in ages. I'll have to go back and play that one again. This games got a lot of elements from NES games and it reminded me of Mega Man, Metroid, and ever Milon's Secret Castle at one point.
@DlNKYDANA BTW, you should try Pixel's other game, ika-chan. It's about a little squid. It uses the cave story engine, but it's a lot simpler and shorter (it was his first game).
