now that i look back on this game, coach drew using his last timeout after the 1st free throw instead of after the 2nd was brilliant...gave his team time to gather themselves for "pacer" and iced the shooter at the line, all at the same time. i remember when i watched it live, i was like "what r u thinkin"
It's funny, the announcer says, "You can't diagram that and you can't practice it." But the fact is, it was diagrammed (called "Pacer") and the team *did* practice it.
This is still in my opinion the best play in NCAA history. a 13 seed in Valpo who was completely unheard of, knocking off a 4 seed on a full court pass hitting a 3pt shot to win by a point. Don't come back to me with Laettners shot either. Duke/Ken great moment, not near as the same category as an upset and shot like this.
Why not? Just because it wasn't an upset doesn't make it any less great a shot. To me, the significance of the Laettner shot raises it above this. He doesn't hit that shot, they don't win the title. This Drew shot was amazing, but the larger context of the Laettner shot makes a difference. This happens all the time in sports. The more important the game, the more important the moment. Does that mean Drew's shot wasn't amazing? Of course not. But, iMO it doesn't beat Duke-Kentucky
its not JUST about that single shot man. its about how they clawed and scratched to try 2 beat this 4 seed and after all that on a half court pass and shot he hits and all the emotions come out at once thats y he was so hype when he hit they had finally done it!
I saw Bryce play against my high school in the state championship in 94. He scored like 4 points in the first half, and about 33 in the second. If it hadn't been for Jaraan Cornell (who would later star at Purdue) hitting a 3 pointer at the buzzer, Drew's team would've won. Classic game.
No team that has ever won the NCAA has lost that year in earlier rounds - 32 teams a year will tell you that every game - including first round games - matter. You've never played sports, obviously, from your comment or you would know that every game matters. The same, sadly, can't be said about comments: Irrelevent comment from an irrelevent poster.
I remember watching this game. I just turned on the TV , exactlt at the part where the Ole Miss player missed the freethrow. I was just getting up, hung over(partying the night before) , laying in bed with the remote. then the Drew half-court shot woke my ass up. My brother was yelling in the other room. I was like WTF? just happened? WHo the fuck is Valpo. Haha, what a wild ride that school had. That was something else.
What a play. What a story. Coaches son, misses the first game winner, then Ole Miss misses the two foul shots, son gets another chance and wins the game.
All the great basketball that's been played over the years, and I still have to hear about Bryce Drew. I bet Bryce Drew is even tired of hearing about Bryce Drew.
To Mevins31: sucks to be you. Valpo must have wrecked your bracket. Nothing like a poor sport showing up years later. Great shot, great moment, now get lost, Mev.
Watching the replay still gives me chills 11 years later. Still one of the most remarkable plays in tourney history. (Valpo went to the sweet 16 and narrowly lost to Rhode Island in the regional semifinals) They called the play "The Pacer." Drawn up from a play the Indiana Pacers had in their book.
I was a senior in high school in South Bend, IN that year and we had a 1/2 day. I remember watching it like it was yesterday. Bryce choose Valpo over Notre Dame so he could play for his dad. Side note, his dad formerly coached in South Bend at NAIA power Bethel College.
my high school runs this play and it really worked for my game winner

My favorite March Madness buzzer beater. That play was executed to perfection. All that hard work paid off.

This was a great moment and just proves two things.
The first is that ANYTHING can happen in the NCAAs.
The second is proof that Ted Robinson should stick with calling tennis.
fatman50000 2 years ago
ok, maybe he should stick with calling tennis, but dont tell me that "Drew for the win, got it" isnt one of the greatest calls in sports.
wmsballer13 2 years ago
The Valpo call was 100 times better.
Give me Verne Lundquist, Tim Brando, or Gus Johnson in that case, not Ted Robinson.
fatman50000 2 years ago
Wrong again, fat man. Teddo nailed it. His sense of gravitas cannot be overlooked.
