"Romanians descend from the Dacians, an ancient people who fell under Rome's dominance in the first century A.D., intermarried with Roman colonists, and adopted elements of Roman culture, including a Vulgar Latin that evolved into today's Romanian."
"The poor peasants sold everything," says one excited commentator.
Where have the peasants gone? How do they live? Are they cheap labor in Italy?
Are we supposed to see this as a vital part of the "New Europe"? Romanian peasants - OUT: Italian investors and American military bases - IN.
Romania has less political power in the world now than in Ceausescu's time. And more debt to foreign banks through the manipulations of Iliescu and Bascescu.
@cristinaronson: The spirit of a land, embodied in its culture, ALWAYS lives with its people - of all classes, both in the towns and the countryside.
BUT there are always thieves who will take material things from those weaker than themselves. Property falls into foreign hands and the current imperial power will confiscate land for military purposes.
It happened a thousand years ago in Roman times; it's happening now in American times.
@D1lk yes they have already stolen lands, from 3 million hectares of land that we used for agriculture we have 100.000 left and we cant produce anymore agriculture is a big part of our economy and we were able to produce for dozens of countries and now we are practically starving. this is not logical its insane! the businessmen who come here are not real businessmen they come here to steal and abuse because they know they'll get away with it. I hate capitalism politicians mafia I hate everything
@cristinaronson I am sorry to hear of the renewed plunder. The pattern you describe is not new. It has been used in third-world countries: limit or destroy agricultural production; make both peasants and urban dwellers dependent on imported food; deepen the total indebtedness of the entire economy.
Eventually the country becomes a tourist resort rampant with illegal dealings. The former "police state" becomes the present mafia state. Freedom - true freedom - remains as elusive as ever...
@D1lk yes everything applies to us except fro teh last part its not going to become a tourists resort a haven for mafia when I said mafia I was talking about politicians they're as corrupt as they can be but we dont have that kind of mafia that latin american countries have for ex. or our russian neighbors politicians have their own ways of making money by mixing business and politics they give public contracts to their own companies and they're rich
@D1lk and businessmen they dont have respect for us if they have to build something they'll build half and leave it unfinished and no one's gonna make them pay for it thats what I mean by abuse I'm talking about french, austrian companies etc not 3rd world mafia. but its true we are a tool for well developed countries colonialism has changed to capitalism rich countries still rule the world adn steal other countries resources and control their economies adn we are one of those little countries
@cristinaronson Thank you for the information. Yes: I think the word "mafia" can be used these days to describe the alliance between politicians and businessmen to exploit a country for their own profit without regard to the people. The exploiters may be natives of the country or foreigners. But they always act in groups (parties, corporations); they usually disappear with profits; they usually escape both prosecution and public condemnation.
Romania today is defenceless before their ravages.

In Gesta Hungarorum , the most important hungarian chroncle, the Hungarians say the Romanians are first in Transilvania.
In Gesta Hungarorum, cea mai importanta cronica maghiara, ungurii spun ca romanii sunt primii in Transilvania.
Gesta Hungarorum
"(IX.) ... in terra Pannonie, que primo Athile regis terra fuisset ... quam terram habitarent Slavi, Bulgarii, et Blachii ac pastores Romanorum."
