And I believe you did and it is absolutely essential. YOU CAN'T DO CRUNCHES WITHOUT UTILIZING YOUR NECK. Either posture , open arm or close, will tighten your neck and why? Because your abdominal muscles aren't strong enough. However, you will eventually reduce the pressure along the way. I am trying to prove THIS<--

You don't want to put your arms behind your head; this will cause injury. Also, lifting your legs to 90 degrees will give the best workout.

make sure you are supporting your neck with your hands. still lift from and focus on the abs, but maintain a brace with your hands.
