  • she continues singing very well. The best Fille du Regiment I've seen was hers in the

State opera in Wiena Not only her singing, but her acting was very good.

  • 6:51 is my favorite part of the whole song.... WOW

  • @jfichter69 it's the most immediately attention grabbing, but imo 8:14 is the most technically impressive, crescendo -> dim trill that is solid throughout.

  • The lady sitting to the right of Dessay at 8:45 is getting an eargasm :)))

  • Thank you great. Mira

  • Kathleen Battle is better isn't ?

Search Strauss - Kathleen Battle - Frühlingsstimmen - Voices of Spring

  • Her coloratura just... AWWmazing ^.^

  • Me encanta, su voz me lleva a un lugar que no existe y me hace envidiar y amar a la vez

  • The best!!!!!

  • whats to say about an absolutely stunning LIVE performance. WOW

  • day-um.

  • Natalie Dessay: (noun) the true epitome of a coloratura soprano, perhaps one of the most amazing operatic vocalists ever known to man. Able to hit high A-flats over high C with such control and beauty that it's both inhuman and angelic. (synonyms) amazing, astonishing, brilliant, delightful, fantastic, magnificent, perfect. :)

  • And here we are eighteen years later... and... she doesn't do the extremely high notes anymore, but in my, and many people's opinion she is better than ever in what she does sing. Her musicianship is phenomenal.

  • @MrHbc3 absolutely agree!

  • The fact that her A-flat is actually beautiful is insane. Such control and clarity. I'm floored by this video.

  • My favorite thing she ever did.

  • lucia popp

  • this is the reason the Damrau version only has 18,146 views...

  • @kodygoad It's not like Damrau is a bad singer...her voice is just lower than Dessay's. I agree with you, though.

  • LOLOLOLOLOL... SHE S JUST OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!! MY GOD! SHE S AMAZING! LOLOLOL I LAUGH EVERY TIME I HEAR THE TOP NOTE AT 6:54 LOLOL

  • @3:41 it sounds like a pinball machine.

  • I'm learning this song with my vocal coach now. LOVE her version. She is truly talented. :D

  • GLORIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • she has unbelievable control over her voice. i love her voice!

  • I'm pretty sure those weren't a-flats...lol. I think they're like e-flats. That's insane!!!

  • @ladyjbug841 I'm pretty sure she IS singing an Ab at 6:54 at the top of the scale.

  • @dopineapple I suppose it just sounded higher to me last I listened. Her singing is indeed beautiful, German diction, not so much! Lol, but I stand corrected Dr. Dopineapple :)

  • Very nice!

  • how can someone be so flawless in singing ? and such a pleasant voice ... this woman is where she belongs .

  • i know dessay's voice is bigger then battels', and think she is an extra ordinary performer and singer. yet I prefer battels' voice - a more sweet and better coloured one- for this walz.

  • Suprema Nathalie,hermosa voz,que gracia,belleza y estilo,agudos y sobreagudos bellisimos,Queen Nathalie!!!!

  • Da kommt richtige Frühlingsstinnung auf! Bei der Stimme!

  • the finale note is out of tune ....

  • 8min30seconds of heaven....make that 17min..I'm playing it again~! XD BRAVA^_^

  • What a final! What a beginning! What a middle! What a perfec presentation! I love opera! I love Natalie Dessay! :)

  • Mariah Carey struggles to hit those notes. lol

  • @arabiandouble thats so funny you mentioned her

i was just thinking man thats so high, and Mariah still has almost an octave

  • @theblueangel28 lol, yeah. just a few life facts...

  • @theblueangel28 Mariah might have an octave on this singer, however her notes sound like she's being stuck with a pin! natalie D has a voice that MC can only dream of.

  • @123claremont oh well i wasnt commenting on how they sound, just a technicality. and even though Mariah isnt a classical singer, she can cascade through r&b better than anyone ever has

but i am not making a comparison, of course Natalie is a virtuoso

    -Love

  • What a great moment that must have been for the young Dessay. She absolutely nails the piece. One of the best demonstrations of the quality of her voice back then, but if you want to see Dessay at her very best you cannot go past her magnificent Glitter and Be Gay performance... youtube.com/watch?v=B5pTwRhmRL4&feature=related

  • she makes it looks so effortless!

  • omgg!!! the best soprano!

  • 7:02 Erna Sack do it better then anyone!

  • she is little rsrs i was think she was tall lol

  • As I said, met her person-she's a little slip of a lady, but what volume comes from that tiny person! Lovely in every way! Natalie, you are magnifique!

  • This lady is so wonderful. I live in Santa Fe--and saw her in La Sonambula, La Traviata and in concert (shook her hand, thanked her)--and at a local night club ere where I shook her hand again. She is so modest, no diva temperment. And my friend who saw her in Chicago at the Lyric echoes me. Sweet, kind, incredible talent. Class. Ms. Dessay the remote possiblitiy you are reading this--a BIG THANKYOU for your artistry and kindness!

  • her sound isnt very warm... I prefer K bATTLE

  • @Babs22h Kathleen Battle's voice, as wonderful as it is, is anything but warm. Ms. Battle's voice is the very epitome of "silvery". Ms. Dessay has a much warmer and more floral tone.

  • Truly you cannot get a cigarette paper between Nathalie and Kathleen Battle. They are both on top of their game.

  • She's amazing. :)

  • This woman's voice simply makes me happy. Her acting entrances me, and were she not young enough to be my daughter, I should make a fool of myself over her.

  • 6:54 Sol# O_O

  • I am really not a Dessay fan, however no one can deny those beautifully and effortlessly executed high notes.

  • The supernumeraries and chorus on scene seem to be having a ball with her performance!

    Brava!

  • Ok, I will clare this up...between Battle and Dessay:

Kathleen Battle sounds perfect. She makes it sound like it is very easy. Dessay presents us here a more bold interpretation. She reachess to the boundaries of the human voice, of her voice.

If you like perfektion, You like Battle. If you prefer boldness, you like Dessay. And they are both great!

  • I loooooove her!!!! she has been always soo amazing! =)

  • AMAZING. my new favorite music EVER! I think the guy behind her is in love with her. ;D

  • AMAZING. my new favorite music EVER!

  • I am going to be her when I grow up!

  • Genius.

  • She is my favorite, and she is so young in this!

  • Ill add though< I love Natalie's ending.

  • Let me just say, Natalie's voice is beatiful and versatile and I love her. BUT, Kathleen has the most beautiful melody to her singing...it is simply ethereally euphonious. Noone in the world has that kind of sound. Some may have better technique, perhaps even more versatility, but not that melodious sound. Kathleen transcends the genre of opera, even when she is singing opera. It could be pop or jazz or R and B for all we know or care. It is simply just beautiful music.

  • Is this Mozart? Love her voice so much

  • @WilyDacklor This vaudeville crap is NOT Mozart! Natalie makes it worthwhile though.

  • @DottoreJojo Crap?? Why would u used that word? Isn that too sarkastic.

  • Saying you prefer Kathleen Battle to Dessay is like preferring spray cheese to Brie.... there's no comparison...

  • @Pashley91684 hahah love the comparison with cheese ! I totally agree

  • @tetrazzini Excuse me. I happen to love them both. But long before there was

Miss Dessay there was Kathleen who was/is fantastic. I am not at all interested in her behaviour etc etc. Her voice was/is superb.

  • Perfection!

  • Increible

  • To my perfect pitch she hit just about every note dead centre. A very crisp accurate performance with brilliance. Good to be young of course. As wonderful and spectacular as her voice was back then I find I like her older more harmonic voice. The thing that really sets Dessay above others is her superb musicality and acting intuition. But that comes from so many years of experience I guess.

  • @Kina123123 well you have to remember, her acting comes from, well, originally being an actor. then she found she had an incredible voice and........this beautiful performance, among many others, now exist

  • @Kina123123 Oh darling to your perfect pitch. Wow.

  • I don't like this video, she is out of tune in lots of notes, her only attraction here are her high notes. She has done certainly better in other pieces. I prefer Kathleen Battle's.

  • The main differences between the marvelous and charming Erna Sack are, first, the incredible powerful of N. Dessay ( although she is a light soprano, his voice is rich and full, and reaches all the listeners like a laser ), and secondly, her dramatic impact and intensive presence on stage.

  • Me gusta

  • < 3<3 3,<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 < 3< 3< 333

  • me dan ganas de llorar el solo escucharla ES MARAVILLOSA!!

  • There are no such nooootes, haha, still she's able to reach them. :DDD Unbelievable!

  • Wie kann aus so einem zierlichen Körper eine solche Stimme kommen! Einhach nur phantastisch!

  • What a voice! She looks like Christine Daae in that gown. Sounds like her too.

  • EHIIII!!!! The one at 6:54 it's an A, and not an A-flat! I've got a diapason with me, it's absolutely the same note!

  • @BaritonoG That note is just amazing,

  • Nathalie, will you marry me ?

  • @trudbol she is already mine hehehehe :D:D:D:D

  • Tenemos a la sucesora de Edita Gruberova, creo. Gracias.-

  • She's a nightingale with her colloratuur soprano. I got tears in my eyes.

  • what would Strauss say. beautiful just beautiful BRAVA

  • This was incredibly beautiful & phenomenal singing! I can't believe the comments from some of you guys. Are you just jealous or what?? I think Strauss would have adored Natalie!! BRAVA!

  • WOW WOW WOW

  • truly admirable performance!

  • what opera is this from?

  • @buffiexoh Its not from an opera--its a concert aria adaptation of the famous waltz "Voices of Spring" by Strauss. This concert aria is a great favorite of coloraturas (Like Ms. Dessay). But watch out--not for anything lower than that!!

  • I love her high a-flats!

  • amazing...

  • @killerbunny123123 it is simple. Two reasons:

1.- she hurts my ears when singing so high

2.- Generally, not only in this case, I prefer soberer but more elegant performances.

  • @mitxael lol! haha why disgusting?? although she doesnt like singing the high notes, she does it for the audience.....and as u might know, there aren't that many ppl on this planet who can sing an A6 with that technique and control making it sound almost like a bird singing......so why do u, not only not like it, but also find it disgusting??? i rly wanna know :P

  • Maravillosa version!!!!!

    Unica Natalie Dessay!!!!

  • Please dont stone me but she starts off FLAT.

  • I love Dessay's voice... and I love the setting. It looks so XIX century Vienna. Is that Kaiser Franz Josef in the background?

  • jest po prostu najlepsza.

  • pitch is absolutely flawless! her high notes and little trills aren't at all suppressed: perfectly clear. The longer I listened the more I loved it!

  • Chi sono quei dodici che hanno messo "non mi piace" al video?!?!? =') stupenda stupendo stupendissima! arriva al "la bemolle" in cima alla tastiera del pianoforte... O.O

  • C'est magnifique !

  • Just superb! Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks! I did enjoy that! She has such a beautiful voice!

  • Trev, no need to apologize. Someone was just having a snarky day. Welcome to the wonderful world of listening to Opera in general and Dessay in particular. You might enjoy her concert performance of "Air des clochettes" as well

  • I am a newbie to opera, but I really do enjoy listening to it. I didn't mean to offend anyone, and if I did, i'm terribly sorry!

  • What gorgeous singing! Just wonderful!

  • I really do enjoy listening to and watching her perform! Does anyone know if she has performed in Verdi's Aida?

  • Do you know anything of opera?

How can a light coloratura like Dessay ever sing Aida's dramaticsoprano role?

  • Whoa! No need to be insulting. It's obvious TREV. is an opera newbie, but it's even more obvious he or she is enthusiastic and happy to learn.

  • It wasn't my intention to insult, but there are so many ignorant comments on you tube....but, you are right: better be constructive.

  • I'm sure she could if she wanted to. Of course, it wouldn't be ideal. What if she likes the role though? Maybe it's part of her shower rep =P

  • shower rep?

  • You know...the stuff she sings in the shower.

  • Does anyone know more about the context of this video?

  • I could be wrong but I feel like this is what they chose for the entertainment portion during the Ball at Prince Orlofsky's Palace in 'Die Fledermaus' don't quote me though! :-)

  • Yes, that is correct.

  • es una verdadera maravillaaaaa, estupendooooooooooo

  • Yo nunca vere una soprano ligera mejor que ella......todo lo que ella hace es genial.

  • Fantástica, llena de vida, emociona hasta la médula. Gracias por poner este video!

  • I never get tired of watching this video!

  • She is wonderful, I could listen to her all day.

    AMAZING!!!!

  • para mi es la mejor cantante y la mejor voz del mundo.

cuando ella canta me hace feliz. soy un gran admirador. le doy gracias a dios por ella

  • i could soooo fall in love with her :DDDD

  • 6:51 !!

  • To see her is to love her. I would like to travel in time and gobble her up. She's so perfectly yummy.

  • Dessay is magnificent vocally bel canto and acts with charm and grace that brings out the beautiful nuances of Hoffman's lovely but difficult music, Brava

  • One of the great modern bel canto singers and actresses with a magnificent voice that captures Hoffmans' gorgeous music and adds her wonderful charm and beauty to every scene, BRAVA!

  • Natalie is as magnificent a bel canto actress as she sings this wonderful and very difficult Hoffman music with such graceful style that you almost overlook how beautiful she is. A tour de force!

  • Dessay is quite simply magnificent in Hoffman's wonderful music, with a controlled bel canto acting almost as wonderful to watch as to listen to her beautiful singing.

  • Who ever sang Adele in this production must have hated her pretty much for this.

  • @Caskader LOL, you're probably right! Adele is the flashy role and this completely outshines anything anyone could do with the Laughing Song!

  • I think whenever Nathalie feels sad, she just takes her laptop, reads some comments on her Youtube movies and feels better instantly... ;-)

  • I love this comment :)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, magnificant. If i ever could listen to her live. But in the meantime i have to draw on videotapes.

  • Does this remind anyone else of the 3 stooges?

  • she is a complete goddess.

  • Natalie is incredible!

  • Impresionante!!!!!!

No hay nada que hacer La Dessay y la Damrau, son las mejores del planeta los ultimos 10 años!

    Fabulosa!!!!!!!!!

  • perfect...once again !

  • muy pero muy buenoo me encantoooo!!!!!

  • Anything you say Concertobub.

  • may I ask why?

and what's it with the thumbs down???

speaking of clothes: Dessay looks ridiculous in this dress not her style at all she's too classical for this nonsense I know it's supposed to be Wien Walzer & stuff but there's a limit

singing superb as (nearly) always plus she has a really good German diction (contrary to Petitbon)

  • she's part of a Fledermaus production here, they put her in what they put her.

  • of course, I was aware of that but nonetheless they shouldn't have put her into what they put her in ha-ha.

But let's not sweat the small stuff: superb singing!

  • Una maravillosa soprano ligera!!!:D..i

  • Natalie is so amazing, and her high notes are just perfect! I love her voice! :)

Also, you should check out Erna Sack! She sang a C7 in ''Voices Of Spring'', but she never got the credit she deserved, so only a few people know about her.

  • @FrozenMermaid666 Erna do a B6 poked!!

  • questa donna è impressionante...

    ha una tecnica allucinante...

ed è anche una donna bella e simpaticissima...i love naty

  • Quando si dice perfezione...

  • oooh that not at 6:55 was pretty cool....I liked this rendition....I thought she had really good technique, I would agree with this piece needing a lighter singer however I think she pulled it through, good bel canto ; )

  • are you kidding me? a lighter singer??? dessay here was one of the lightest sopranos i´ve ever heard, or which one wolud you recommend me please?

  • I don't know of many other lighter singer exist.

any lyric or bel canto soprano i know could never pop out a high aflat from no where like at 6:55.

her technique is magnificent. it doesn't change from style to style - consistent as bjorling in my opinion

  • Most coloratura sopranos can't A flat at all!

  • Bravo

  • Natalie sings this long, difficult bel canto to perfection. Hers is the best, controlled, and wonderfully restrained delivery imaginable. Let's just llsten to her magic here and forget criticisms of her later roles.

  • my god i just fell in love with this song

  • great

  • Relax - she is fantastic.

  • This makes me sad...... Natalie really sang well in "93". Now she just pushes through her rep... ... yes, we age, but she did not take the best care of her talent. I think she's so gifted, and I really used to love her singing, but now it just gets on my nerves most of the time... She's a wonderful talent, but the bloom is gone and her "acting" doesn't make up for shrill and forced singing. Not in a small voice like this.

  • This video is about Natalie, Eradesso, please stop acting on your secret crush for Netrebko :o)

Dessay had been singing for less than 10 years in 1993, if that isn't talent! Still prefer her later works though, less f-g-a but more colour !
