@RyanteGamer @IFailAtSniping It works with every bigger programming language, but java is a nice example, even multiplatform so you don't discriminate Linux and Mac if you have Windows.

C++ is nice too. Many say it's harder to learn, but this isn't absolutely true(I learned it kinda fast). It's not multiplatform(the same version wouldn't work for mac, windows and linux), but faster and because of this very suitable for game development.

I also heard some good things about C#.

You wanna make a REAL games like Left 4 Dead, Modern Warfare, etc. you need to start off by getting an engine development kit. SDK, UDK, etc. From there you need to pretty much dabble with everything, to make sure you have an idea of what everyone else on a team of developers would be doing. Then get REALLY good at one of them. Be it mapping, programming, modeling, what-have-you. Then a team will pick you up, or if you're good enough at coordinating yourself, you can build your own team.

@iP0dTouchAssistant Actually, there are quite a few people who have been successful with Game Maker. Jesse Venbrux, Matt Thorson, and Andrew Brophy are a few examples, google them if you need proof. Chances are you won't be big unless you get lucky, but it does happen. I've been using it for 2 1/2 years and so far haven't made much progress, but I'm starting to get big, not very, but it's a start.

i have to agree the larger games are alot harder to make but having said that, on your own you could probably make a half decent game within 2-6 months using Unreal Developing Kit (UDK) but the 2D games are supposed to be simplistic.

Game designing with cc+ is arghh frustrating and hard but once you see all your hard work theirs just joy. I kind of just started learning cc+ and it makes me want to break my computer sometimes but if i stick with it i could end up making a franchise like halo or L4D2 which are amazing. Game Maker is great for everyone who has no programming experience at all, and is also useful for people using an 'real' programming language, since you can make a prototype of your game in a few minutes.

I do recommend learning Java/C/C++/Python after using Game Maker for a while, though.
