Does a boy have to leave the choir when he turns 14 or can he stay until his voice changes? That is a terrible decision for both the boy and the choir master.
@ifuliki A Vienna choirboy stays until his voice changes. Outgrowing the choir is not such a terrible experience for many of the boys. As one option, a boy who has just outgrown the choir is given the chance of remaining in the school to finish his high school education at no cost to him (if I'm correct. about the no-cost part).
@ifuliki Hi again. You're most welcome. However I think you're thinking I was a member of the Vienna Boys Choir. Unfortunately I wasn't a member, but wished I had been.
I got the "Gugu" spelling from the back of a 1960's Philips LP of the Vienna Boys Choir singing madrigals and folk songs, one of which was of course about said cuckoo. All the best to you!
What happened in 1998 was that the Vienna Boys Choir (under new directorship) was trying to become more modern and to expand to too many genres different from what it had been so famous for. The overall philosophy of the Vienna Boys Choir had changed. The kids were being spread too thin and standards were more relaxed. This was clearly an experiment that failed and had devastating effects.
Musikview...you are living in the past. The choir's tours were becoming OLD NEWS. Attendance was dropping off and the choir's operettas were OUTDATED. Thanks to current School Director Gerald Wirth...the Vienna Choir Boys have updated themselves...attendance is back on the rise, and the 2005 and 2007 Japan tours were huge successes. Do you expect the choir to stay stuck in the 1940's, 50's and 60's. Change is inevitable. Your comment was written 1 year ago.
So how do you explain that the choir's tours have remain so famous for so many years, even when according to you "the choir's operettas were OUTDATED" ?People enjoyed as much their music in 1999 than in 1997 or today. The group's philophy changed, and it would interest less and less people because the philophy of "being more opened to all the genres " doesn't work if you want to keep a classical root. OK I don't know if I made myself understood, I'm french..
I don't understand what you mean Nashcountryboy. If the choir needed updating then why hasn't it improved? The quality of singing isn't near as good as it used to be. In Japan the choir is popular, but in Europe many, many people are disappointed at the decline in standards of this, once excellent, choir. Change the repertoire if you must, but why let the quality of the singing slip?
I do not know what happened in 1998... And yes, there haven't been any famous soloists like Terry and Max since that time on. Maybe there's problem with their vocal lesson. That's my guess.
I'll say it again. This is the Vienna Boys Choir sounding the way we wish they still could. This was way before the tumultuous changes instituted in the choir from 1998 on, thus ruining this great choir.
Look closely at some of the boys in this clip and you may recognize a few who were in "Almost Angles" three years later.

Hello editor,
I miss the lyrics of the second song: "Wenn der Kuckuck schreit...."
I will help you if you want, but I guess, that you yourself speak German....:)
Apart from that: I have the movie too and I like it !
No problem for me, if you delete this comment.

does anyone know the name of the second song they sing, or slightly "jodel"?
maplemountain 4 years ago
The second song is "Wann der Gugu schreit" ("When the cuckoo calls"), a German folksong.
musikview 4 years ago
It's called "Wann der Kuckuck schreit" (it sounds a bit like "Gugu" with the Austrian pronunciation, because the 'k' isn't aspirated much)

Nevermind, google tells me both versions of the title are used

"In einem kühlen Grunde" ist meines erachtens eines der schönsten Volkslieder. Wie brav der dort vorstellig wird, da hatte man noch Manieren.

Schön, aber um einiges zu schnell! Das Lied ist nachdenklich-traurig, nicht kämpferisch!

The experiment DID NOT FAIL, but is now successful with new vigor and popularity for the choir's tours, recordings, videos, and use in advertising.
