Playing ability comes distant second to your ability to write great riffs and memorable songs. There will always be guitarists on youtube who are cleaner and faster than you are, but they don't know the first damn thing about being memorable.

@ftwfckyea Have you played the Jackson PC-1, the one with the Dinky body? Gibson's got a lot of quality control issues these days and you don't get a lot of bang for the buck. Tried a 1960 Gold Top reissue last weekend at Guitar Center. They wanted $3600 for it. It's a piece of shit. The PC-1 will give you the Les Paul sound, but the Strat sound as well. I love the sound of Les Pauls, but Gibson's known for sticking it to the consumer with high prices and questionable quality. IMHO.

Phil Collen is one of the guitarists out there who actually enjoy teaching his style to us lesser mortals, the whole band has been down to earth since day one and that is something to be proud of. Phil is not stuck up his own ass like some guitarists I could mention, he is just a guy who loves playing guitar and I think he does get embarrassed when put in these situations but at least he does it. A fine man and a fine band who actually care about their fan base and any other passer by

@v6b7n well he's made a few pennies from his guitar, he does like "widdling" for sure but the rest of the band reel him in now and then. Otherwise Phil has a very melodic style, Def Leppard are huge in the USA as they are in the UK and after all these years they are still as strong as ever. By the way by-the-book perfectionist guitar playing is dull. The world's best guitarists often came to light with no tuition and that made them free to bend the rules
not knocking Phil Collen i think he's great but sometimes i think playing fast is kind of pointless, unless it's as spot on as Steve Morse or someone, i'd rather hear someone play slower with more groove and feel.
great vibrato and cool tone. he's clearly a nice player, but why bother with this shredding nonsense.. absolutely terrible.
