I'm 15 years old and I'm a black surfer, I surf at T street or 204's or Huntington and I know exactly how off setting it is to know how it seems there aren't very many black surfers... at all. But looking at this, it's very encouraging, definitely. Thanks for it, I can't wait for the actual documentary to come out.
@combobreaker21 Yeah man. You got me wanting to get wet again so I can represent. Its been several years since i been in the line up. I am over fourty now but i know i still got it. Thanks for the encouragement. I will see you in the water. I gotta do it for the childrenz.... lol. God Bless
Great Video...I'm a black male over 30, who surfs in the Virginia Beach area. A 2nd year surfer, I am all too familiar with the awkwardness of being a black surfer. Your documentary is very refreshing and I will share this video to support the awarness of Black Surfers worldwide!
I was born in Cleveland, Ohio grow up in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2006 I was a 23 yr old young black male surfing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. There where about three of us all together. Thanks for this Doc, Because in American Culture people just don't know. we Surf too. Check all the Black Surfers in Jamaica. I was thinking of doing Documentary similar to this one, Thanks.
.... than the property farther inland. Basically, it breaks down to no access=no surfing. Think about it.... they usually don't build too many tennis courts or golf courses in the inner city communities and the coastal areas (especially in Southern California, though Northern California has it's share) are populated with those who can afford it and that number isn't heavily populated with Blacks or Latinos. This documentary is very important. Thanks.
I grew up surfing with an African-American surfer and we were the only two people of color (I'm Chicano) that we were aware of in our home break in Nor. California outside of the occasional Asian or Hawaiian/Pacific Island surfers.
We used to talk about this a lot and we both came to the conclusion that in California a lot of the reason one didn't see a lot of blacks or Latinos surfing was a direct result of socioeconomic reasons, i.e. property with ocean access is far more expensive....

I used to surf for years during the late senties and early eighties. This warms my heart and makes me want to move near the ocean again.

You learn to surf in Rockaway Queens, NY or Long Beach, NY. I surf at both beaches every weekend.

I am a pretty good surfer now. I can floaters and cutback and snap. I am 15 and black and it is awkward in Santa cruz haha. But its cool now!

@niceprince Anywhere there is whitewater waves. Just get a 9'6 longboard, learn to paddle and pop up, learn the timing and let the ocean do the rest.
