So hunting, his music is hunting, he's like the Van Gogh of music, under appreciated in his own time and people came to realize how special he was much after he was gone, love Nick Drake
I like checking the comments here every once in a while. No one ever agrees. People compare the supposed Nick to Bigfoot. People claim to have known him, claim it is/isn't him.
I like not knowing. If this was him, I think I'd feel a little more lost. Keeping the world at distance, even after death, Nick Drake is an introverted idealized figure uniting us all. Keep guessing. I will too :)
Trying to get close to Nick by looking at a man's back is kind of missing the point. Everything you need to know about Nick is in the photos and the music. Patrick Humphries book is great, and really blasts through all the romanticized nonsense about him. He was lost a soul, a stoner who's development got stuck somewhere in his late teens; he lost the plot and lost himself...ended up living back at his parents, numbed out on antidepressents. Let him rest and enjoy the songs!
If he was at this festival to play, would he not have been carrying his guitar case? Even so, I can think of 10 reasons why he wouldn't have it, and I'd rather err on the side of serendipity and believe it's him.
Really seems too tall to my eye. Even at 6' 4", I think this figure is too large. The ill-fitting shirt and hair style are somewhat intriguing, but aren't compelling enough for me. I bet a lot of people had shirts like that and had that exact hairstyle. Plus, being so tall, it isn't surprising the man's shirt is too small. It's hard to say definitively, but it'd be interesting to see what his sister might have to say. She would know for sure if that is Nick based on the height alone. Cool still.
@Ngerty1 Also, the photos of him leaning against the brick wall as people pass by shows his height relative to the average man. Although he clearly was tall, I don't think there is a perfect match here.
A couple of months ago, I posted a message to the effect that it might well be Nick, or wishful thinking. I also had it in mind that this might be American, but Tolly Cobbold was an Ipswich firm of brewers. I am inclined to think that it may well be Nick Drake, given the size of the wrists and the ill-fitting sleeves, but we will never know for sure so why not just listen to the music? To quote the late John Martyn. "He's dead - You're alive"! There's a lot of sense in that.
That is most definitely him. Nick was 6' 3", very tall and thin. He has that exact jacket, the sleeves are too short (like on all of his shirts), his hands are massive, his shoulders broad, and legs skinny just like this guy, along with that light brown, wavy hair. There are two good photos of Nick standing with his back to the camera and they look just like this.
I can't believe I've just gotten to see him moving, even for just a few seconds. I've played it about 50 times already. Just amazing.
on friday night,{ 23.09.11} The old Grey whistle Test story was shown on BBC4. About 10 minutes in this same footage was shown! The marquee in the background says Tolly Cobbold,Licensed Bar. @creepyfreak99 Haha I totally agree with you. I am a short skinny bastard and have a very deep voice that doesn't fit my face and body lol. I always get a kick out of seeing a studly meathead talk with a super high pitch voice and then I bring my voice down to the lower ends of the 2nd octave and sound very masculine.
I have seen a picture with him in the same jacket. .. i think it may well be the dude his selves are very short and if you look at the pictures all his jackets are short.
I never actually knew that there was any footage of Nick available. This is so sad as it would have been a brilliant celebration of his life had there been some footage.
GOT MORE INFO! this was In octuber of 1969, Nick opened a show of Fairport Convention at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and later he made two live appearances in folk music clubs in Birmingham and Hull. Remember his presentation in Hull, the folk singer Michael Chapman said that Nick was not well recived by the audience saying 'I wanted song with chorouses' and Nick did not say a word in all night.
I have my doubts, the guy could have been anyone by the other side if the tall one is Nick, according with an interview to Molly Drake im almoust sure that this video was record in the Festival Hall, for the video of Frank Sinatra, it was in the '70 in London.
How ridiculous, every other person in the 70s would have looked like that from behind. Stupid post misleading post. I even looked like that in the 80s. I can't believe people are actually debating whether this is Nick Drake!!!!!!
cally at Bryter music says that they are as much in the dark as the rest of us about this clip. There was a festival at krumlin, yorkshire, between August 14th-16th, 1970, which is well documented on the net. As with many festivals it was quite wet there!
There is a big book planned about Nick for 2012, which will contain much of his music & lyrics, but this is in it's early stages at the moment.
@suicidalquiff Hi! I emailed cally at Bryter music. He said that there are no plans for an official biography on Nick, but they hope to bring out a big book in 2012 that will feature his music & lyrics, plus a section on his live appearances. The book is currently in it's early stages. Nick is meant to have played a short set supporting Free at a music festival in yorkshire, may, 1970. Cally is checking if it's on their database or not. All the best, steve
Nick has been described by some people who met him as appearing 7ft tall, so this looks right. Seriously he must be between 6ft 4 and 6ft 6, does that sound about right, does anyone know?

@MrDavidSawatski He wasn't his entire life Five leaves left through Bryter Layter, he was alive and expecting greatness, but during the time of pink moon or after or after Bryter layter, theres not way in hell he'd be at one.
It could be Nick..who knows for sure. He was known for wearing his father's old Turnbull & Asser shirts, which were too short for him. In this footage the hands & short shirt cuffs look similar to photos of him. It might help to put a date on this footage if it's possible to read the sign on the marquee. maybe someone could enhance it & give us a clue/!!
That's him. And that fact that this is the only live recording of him really suits his whole theme. His face isn't seen, he's a gigantic mystery. The video itself is extremely erie.
There is a picture of Nick Drake videos where he is walking with his back to the camera down to a lake or pond or something. I think it was taken pretty late in his life Anyway his posture and dimesions looks an awful lot like the dude in this video.
Going by all the pics I've seen, hairstyle, build, etc...that sure looks like Nick to me. What a great talent. I suppose his spirit wanders the Earth today, much like it is in this clip. Thanks for sharing.
2-Pause this video: ¨bbc radio Nick Drake special part 1¨ at 02:35... look that picture of him.
Compare the walking he is ¨doing¨ in the photo (´cuz I think that photo was taken while he was walking) and look carefully... then look at this video at 0:10.
It could be him, but is could very easily be anybody.. the style of hair and clothing suit but im very sure many other people would have dressed and worn the same hair as nick Drake at that time
It certainly resembles him. I don't know how reliable you believe Wikipedia is, but they claim that no moving images of drake exist. Just music, and photographs.
No! Nick would have worn a jacket that fitted him in the arms. Check his first few steps out. I don,t think for one minute Nick would of let his mother aviod the dry cleaners he was to smart for that.
@wgueits It could well be him actually but i laughed as I thought at first you were saying he looks like bigfoot there - like he's lumbering awkwardly along - ah bless him
@callunaling - Well, I was mostly referring to how there's nearly NO footage of him, no interviews yet we know he existed because of his music. Then when I saw this clip, it's such a quick shot at someone who may or may not be Nick, it's a back shot. On top of everything the footage is in a slow motion - so he does seem like Big Foot! Ha ha ha!!
I'm old enough to remember how British folkies dressed in the 70s - this feels later in the seventies. The two women (not very folkie looking) look more 75/76 to me, he died in late 74? If this is say Cambridge Folk Festival (probably the most likely) I'd put it as sometime later than 74. But that's just a gut feel, I could be very wrong!
Maybe it's not important, enigma will always follow Nick Drake, his life, death and most importantly his music and this then is another part of that enigma.
I'm getting this feeling it was him.The too-short for his arms jacket.Tall, and the hair the right style and length.Seems like a place he would be as well. The fact his face is obscured adds to the mystery. It is so typical of things "Nick Drake".I vote yes.it is him, imho.
its really a lot lot like that famous clip of big foot. he only has to turn round for a quick glance before disappearing. lol shit i dont know. the clothes are completely like those from the pics of nick. he got right build n shit. hes proper tall and awkward and i think nick was both.
shit i guess we wont ever know but i like to think it is anyway :)
@Echidnasfurrow Mr Kirby, you died on 3rd october 2009.So unless you've come back as a ghost we can assume your playing a sick joke at the expense of Robert Kirby and his family.
With the millions of people in this world and a shot of one person from behind, how can anyone just assume this is Nick Drake? You never see the guy's face. This could be anyone. People dressed similarly, as they do now. If you look at half the people in a bar from their backside they probably look pretty similar. I think this thread of theories is more whacked than the 9/11 conspiracy. C'mon, people - you're smarter than this.
@superjumpman92 that dude in the film look taller than that.Could be him as the profile of his hair and dress and long hands appear to be,but we can't be certain.Who's film is this and did they know they were filming Drake?
If this is real, OK. I can see the resemblance from the photos. But there's no way of telling for sure. I can't believe nobody saw fit to either film or tape one single ND performance at the time, or at least film an interview with the guy.
Talk about clutching at straws - look Nick wasn't the only tall bloke in Britain, most people dressed like that, and most men around his age had long hair.
This is a sign of how desperate the search has got for some Nick Drake live footage. I might just watch this on repeat with Bryter Layter playing in the background.
Its a nice thought but i doubt it. Everyone who was into folk at that time had the exact same look. Plus, 1970 was the point where Nick changed and became more withdrawn.
@hazeyjaneI not everyone with that hairstyle and of that height. look at the back of FLL - he's towering over the budget guy just like he's towering over the people here.
if you look at the back of bryter layter it certainly is very like him. same arm length, hair and jacket. not exactly a common image, and not many with that image and height. the fact its supposed to be a folk festival would definately make it highly likely. he's about 6 inches taller than guy in white to his left. if we take it that av height is 5 ft 9 then that leaves the nick a like at 6 ft 3 which was his height. tho it could be argued this person is an inch or 2 taller ?
Haha now no offense (i hate that phrase too, i know), but this discussion and the short video clip reminds me of those History Channel specials on bigfoot lol
First things first: It's a pretty safe bet to conclude that we'll never know for ABSOLUTE sure whether or not that the man in question is really the one and only Nick Drake. BUT honestly, given every picture I've ever seen of him, from everything I've heard of his mannerisms, the length of hair and uncommon height, the strange sort of gait, I'd give the chance of this being legit at about 75%.
One thing that also makes me think it might be him is the fact that he's walking alone. : (
im sad to admit but of course its not him. it really does look to be him, but just think about it a little. nick like never went out of the house, and just stared at a wall at times. why would he go to a festival, a VERY social event? he was a massive introvert.
Nice try but check out Keith Morris portrait hampstead 71 he's walking away from the camera and his shoulders (relative to the rest of him) are much broader. Aspect ratio wouldn't make a difference on this point. Plus - his torso is longer than this guys. This guy has longer legs than Nick - relative to his body. Nicks hands don't hang this far down his body. hair matches nick c. 1970 but later nicks hair is shorter/straighter /not well kept. he did play a festival tho. May 70 yorkshire.
@winston232 both his parents are dead, no one can say, if he was there at a random date... although i'm not sure if his sister is alive, im sure she could tell.
at 0:09 when he's further away from the camera, you can see that he isn't too tall to be Nick. it's just the angle that makes him look like a giant at the beginning.
Hey, if you think that in this vid (supposed) Nick Drake is too tall, you should pay attention to the other guy in white suit, he also looks very tall comparing to those who come close from far... it's because of the way this vid was shot.
I don't think this is him, pretty convincing at first but when you consider he was what, 6 3? and he's clearly a foot bigger than most the people there.
Im sure that's him.........my dad saw him when he was supporting Joe+the somethings or other.....i'll have to get back to you all on this, but im sure that's him, i just compared it with the sleeve from Made to Love Magic(the back) thats him man, im sure of it................
Hi iamkentphil, It's Country Joe and the Fish from SanFrancisco and Berkeley, California. They were famous for their song, "I Feel Like I'm Fixin to Die Rag". Saw them in Berkeley in the 60's doing teach- ins on the Viet Nam War.
Does your dad think this is Nick Drake? How fortunate he was to have seen Nick play!
So hunting, his music is hunting, he's like the Van Gogh of music, under appreciated in his own time and people came to realize how special he was much after he was gone, love Nick Drake

Best comment so far, "everybody looked like that in the 70s!" Lol!

I like the way Nick Drake seems like Bigfoot or the Abominable Snowman; there's no interviews or footage of him. He's like a myth or something....
wgueits 1 year ago 55
@wgueits all you need is his music
tolstoythegreat 1 year ago
@tolstoythegreat - That's true but seeing someone play live sometimes enhances the experience!
wgueits 6 months ago
@wgueits
There is footage of him - 8mm silent when he was a kid at the beach. Only moving pictures I've ever seen.
aledw 7 months ago
@wgueits It could well be him actually but i laughed as I thought at first you were saying he looks like bigfoot there - like he's lumbering awkwardly along - ah bless him
callunaling 7 months ago
@callunaling - Well, I was mostly referring to how there's nearly NO footage of him, no interviews yet we know he existed because of his music. Then when I saw this clip, it's such a quick shot at someone who may or may not be Nick, it's a back shot. On top of everything the footage is in a slow motion - so he does seem like Big Foot! Ha ha ha!!
wgueits 7 months ago
@wgueits though there are songs on his bootlegs where its just nick talking...
LeedsBoy24 6 months ago
@wgueits actually one recording of him talking exists. just search for "nick drake monologue" and you'll be stunned.
WhiteTulip2113 6 months ago
@wgueits There's one known interview of him. You can read it online somewhere -- it's very short.

it's not him.

@mattax222 How do you know?
BlackHoleSun1921 1 year ago
I'm old enough to remember how British folkies dressed in the 70s - this feels later in the seventies. The two women (not very folkie looking) look more 75/76 to me, he died in late 74? If this is say Cambridge Folk Festival (probably the most likely) I'd put it as sometime later than 74. But that's just a gut feel, I could be very wrong!
Maybe it's not important, enigma will always follow Nick Drake, his life, death and most importantly his music and this then is another part of that enigma.
9011jonny 1 year ago
did look alot like him but i still believe there were no video recordings of him.. however this is quite convincing... i'm not sure
TheJonnyDude 1 year ago
I'm getting this feeling it was him.The too-short for his arms jacket.Tall, and the hair the right style and length.Seems like a place he would be as well. The fact his face is obscured adds to the mystery. It is so typical of things "Nick Drake".I vote yes.it is him, imho.

its really a lot lot like that famous clip of big foot. he only has to turn round for a quick glance before disappearing. lol shit i dont know. the clothes are completely like those from the pics of nick. he got right build n shit. hes proper tall and awkward and i think nick was both.
shit i guess we wont ever know but i like to think it is anyway :)

congratulations people, you've just walked past a legend!!
If ,of course, it is Nick
samtyler100 1 year ago
With the millions of people in this world and a shot of one person from behind, how can anyone just assume this is Nick Drake? You never see the guy's face. This could be anyone. People dressed similarly, as they do now. If you look at half the people in a bar from their backside they probably look pretty similar. I think this thread of theories is more whacked than the 9/11 conspiracy. C'mon, people - you're smarter than this.

superjumpman92 1 year ago
@superjumpman92 that dude in the film look taller than that.Could be him as the profile of his hair and dress and long hands appear to be,but we can't be certain.Who's film is this and did they know they were filming Drake?
daehoidareht 1 year ago
I'd like to think it's him so i'm going to believe it's him. I mean his hands are huge, the slouching, jacket, hair. I think it's him.
SirMichaelShay 1 year ago
If this is real, OK. I can see the resemblance from the photos. But there's no way of telling for sure. I can't believe nobody saw fit to either film or tape one single ND performance at the time, or at least film an interview with the guy.

damn, dat nigga was tall!
Stabat13 1 year ago 3
Talk about clutching at straws - look Nick wasn't the only tall bloke in Britain, most people dressed like that, and most men around his age had long hair.

@gordonbennet yeah its true, but i guess we will never know! its a long shot, someone should ask gabrielle.
hazeyjaneI 1 year ago
It's a long shot but it would certainly fit the description.
pawnsacrifice1 1 year ago
This is a sign of how desperate the search has got for some Nick Drake live footage. I might just watch this on repeat with Bryter Layter playing in the background.
starcorea 1 year ago 2
Its a nice thought but i doubt it. Everyone who was into folk at that time had the exact same look. Plus, 1970 was the point where Nick changed and became more withdrawn.
hazeyjaneI 1 year ago
@hazeyjaneI not everyone with that hairstyle and of that height. look at the back of FLL - he's towering over the budget guy just like he's towering over the people here.
gordonbennet 1 year ago
if you look at the back of bryter layter it certainly is very like him. same arm length, hair and jacket. not exactly a common image, and not many with that image and height. the fact its supposed to be a folk festival would definately make it highly likely. he's about 6 inches taller than guy in white to his left. if we take it that av height is 5 ft 9 then that leaves the nick a like at 6 ft 3 which was his height. tho it could be argued this person is an inch or 2 taller ?

First things first: It's a pretty safe bet to conclude that we'll never know for ABSOLUTE sure whether or not that the man in question is really the one and only Nick Drake. BUT honestly, given every picture I've ever seen of him, from everything I've heard of his mannerisms, the length of hair and uncommon height, the strange sort of gait, I'd give the chance of this being legit at about 75%.
One thing that also makes me think it might be him is the fact that he's walking alone. : (

SherrieLeaLaird 1 year ago
im sad to admit but of course its not him. it really does look to be him, but just think about it a little. nick like never went out of the house, and just stared at a wall at times. why would he go to a festival, a VERY social event? he was a massive introvert.
Linqua2112 1 year ago
@Linqua2112 They just said on the documentary's that he could be quite fun and the dark image didn't come til later when he lost it.
His legs and height look just like that pic with the dog
SherrieLeaLaird 1 year ago
I'm gonna say nay. Too many people had that look back then, a back just isn't enough for me.
TheJamesVincent 1 year ago
Nice try but check out Keith Morris portrait hampstead 71 he's walking away from the camera and his shoulders (relative to the rest of him) are much broader. Aspect ratio wouldn't make a difference on this point. Plus - his torso is longer than this guys. This guy has longer legs than Nick - relative to his body. Nicks hands don't hang this far down his body. hair matches nick c. 1970 but later nicks hair is shorter/straighter /not well kept. he did play a festival tho. May 70 yorkshire.
TheConductor71 1 year ago
He looks tall, Nick Drake was suppoused to be very tall, shoulders and hair look like his too.

at 0:09 when he's further away from the camera, you can see that he isn't too tall to be Nick. it's just the angle that makes him look like a giant at the beginning.

Hey, if you think that in this vid (supposed) Nick Drake is too tall, you should pay attention to the other guy in white suit, he also looks very tall comparing to those who come close from far... it's because of the way this vid was shot.
